So I am about to get a relaxer on Saturday. Besides petroleum jelly and maybe stuff that comes in relaxer kits as basers, what is something good to base with? I always burn to some degree, so I am looking for ways to minimize that. This is my first relaxer since joining the forum, so I finally have people to ask. :band:

When I do my sister's, I usually have to grease her entire scalp, and then I sometimes add a little jojoba oil to the relaxer so I can get all the relaxer in before it starts burning.

Have you tried a mild/sensitive scalp relaxer? I think that might help more than extra basing.

I use Summit Sensitive Scalp base cream. I wash my hair the day before a relaxer ( I don't suggest this but it works for me). When I wash I don't stimulate the scalp.

I start basing right after the wash and I continue to base (dang I sound like a crackhead) that evening and the morning before the relaxer. I have no burning whatsoever. I am relaxed with Design Essentials.

My whole life I have gone to the salon and gotten sensitive scalp relaxers and always at some point... :couchfire: (Singing: "Firrrreee!! Uh... ah... ump...") Haha...

Hey. Check out Macheriamour's your tube video on preparing for a relaxer. She used to be a member here. She has a series of videos on hair care. This in addition to base adjustment may work for you. She starts basing with castor oil the week before the relaxer.
