Best kind of protein for treating overly-porous hair?

Don't worry be happy
Hey y'all :). Recently I discovered I have a porosity issue, which, I think I'm getting a handle on it by using porosity control and protein treatments followed by good moisture DC's.

I learned about the importance of protein when addressing porosity from sistaslick's porosity articles. My question is what KIND of protein works best?

I've been currently been using collagen based treatments, Roux Mendex to be exact. Collagen adds elasticity to the hair right? I'm wondering though, should I be using something that fortifies the cuticle like keratin?

My recommendation is, go VERY easy on the protein. In fact, if you've been using protein regularly maybe stop for a while. Concentrate on the PC & moisture. In the meantime, you can research the various proteins and how to incorporate them into your regimen. Personally, my hair HATES the "strong" proteins, like Aphogee, so I use proteins for moisture and elasticity, like hydrolized wheat, silk amino acids, wheat germ oil, etc.

Once you figure out what you want to use, a good place to purchase is lotioncrafters.com.

Good luck and I hope this helps.

I would basically stick to lighter products (along with the Mendex). AO GBP, Giovanni Nutra-Fix, Nexxus Keraphix, and others.:yep:

I would focus more on Porosity and getting that properly balanced between Protein/Moisture. Porosity stems from the your Hair's inability to 'retain' moisture.

I would save my Harder Core Protein Treatments for 4,6,8 weeks.

Exactly! In addition to following what T has recommended, you should also start introducing products with ceramides into your regimen as well. Ceramides mimic proteins, but they are actually fatty acids that "fill in" weak areas on the hair shaft. Sistaslick has a great article on ceramides and there are several good threads floating around here on them as well.

You know, I thought of upping my protein because I had been using light proteins like Alafaparf nourishing creme for about a month now, follwed up by a moisture DC minimal improvement. But I've only been incorporating the PC for about 4 washes. My hair has been getting better each time, but I guess I need to be more patient. Thanks lady :)

Thanks for the links I've actually not used ceramides in a while...Hmmm maybe this is part of the problem as well. Thanks Amerika

You're Right. It will get better and better each time.:yep:

My Hair was extremely damaged and overly porous. I used this faithfully(and still use this) weekly as my final rinse, especially after I DC with Heat. Heat causes the Cuticle to be Open/Lifted/Swollen/Raised.

While protein treatments serve to strengthen your Hair, products with a low ph balance or are acidic in nature, will help repair/seal/flatten/close the structure of the cuticle.

It will turn around soon.:yep:

btw: I Love Rigen. I use it weekly too.

Thanks for the encouragement :) about how long did it take to get your porosity under control?

@ the bolded: yeah i love that stuff :yep: I guess cause it has a low pH as well.

I still use products to correct the issue. I guess it took me about 3-4 months of consistent use.:yep:

Under a microscope our hair look like little 'fish scales' and when your porosity is 'off' the scales are raised/lifted up, thus, causing moisture/protein etc....to escape from your hair. i.e. hair's inability to absorb/retain moisture. Causing dry, brittle and overly porous hair.:ohwell:

Healthy porosity, the scales are flattened. Not lifted. You want to make sure your products have a lower ph level (which also help).

I will look for Newflowers Thread and post it. And you can see what I am talking about.

I find that Nexxus Emergencee in the gold bottle works the very best. For me nothing compares. But, make sure you moisturize very good with a good deep moisturizing conditioner like Nexxus Humectress or another favorite afterwards.

Yes! Its actually your and LaidBak's posts in newflowers' thread that really got me to dig out my PC in the first place!

Good Sweetie! You'll Get there. It was definitely a 'Lightbulb' moment. Because, when people started telling me my hair was: "Overly Porous" I literally had no idea what that meant.

I relied on the Salon to take care of my Hair. I knew nothing hair-care related. Which Sounds Bad:nono:

I figured, that's what I pay them weekly for.:perplexed Make it Look Good. Solve the issues. And leave me be:lachen:

So, after a tragic Salon Mishap, I began to research everything I could to get to the root of this problem and correct it and became a DIY'er.

I would definitely go with Aubrey Organics Glycogen Protein Balancing Conditioner. Its a light protein with creamides from wheat protein. Its practically perfect in every way.
