I remember a thread like this a long time ago. I thought it would be fun to do it again with the newbies and the people who didn't see the other thread.

Just finish the sentence. Before LHCF I....

1. Never heard of a clarifying shampoo.
2. Never heard of a protein treatment
3. Relaxed my hair every four weeks:eek:
4. Used pump it up and a hotcurler every week:eek:
I'll be back with more

Before LHCF I...

1.Used to give myself a "touch up" by slathering the perm all the way down my strands.
2. Used regular conditioner as a leave in. I'd wash, condition, and then just BRUSH my hair into a ponytail.
3. Brushed my hair with a hard bristled brush while wet
4. Would blow dry and curl my hair EVERY MORNING before class
5. Let stylists cut and butcher my hair at their discretion

Before LHCF I...
  • relaxed every 4-6 weeks
  • used a curling iron almost every day
  • washed hair every two weeks
  • constantly had a dry and itchy scalp
  • never knew about clarifying
  • never knew about conditioner washes
  • never knew the principles of protective styling
  • had dry, crispy hair and no hairline in the front
  • suffered glue and sew-in weave damage
  • never had shoulder length hair

--Didn't know what a texturizer was.

--Didn't know about stretching relaxers.

--Didn't know how to manage my own hair.

--Thought I was doomed to hair slavery (e.g., crackhead dependence on hairdressers, restrictive dependence on relaxers, overextended time and money in hair salons, etc.)

--Didn't know that my hair in its natural texture has a vast repertoire of styles, e.g., natural coils, roller sets, blowouts, etc.

--Didn't have the expectation/realization that my hair CAN GROW! Now I do and my hair is GROWING!:)

Before LHCF I.....
1. Never clarified.
2. Never moisturized.
3. Never treated my hair with TLC, I'd just rip through it because I hated it so much b/c of the way it looked AND felt. :(
4. Would get touch-ups every 6 weeks, sometimes 5.
5. Only washed my hair every three weeks.
6. Constantly wore weaves, braids, etc. without caring for my own hair underneath.
7. Always had a sore, itchy scalp.

Before LHCF I:

  • thought I would always suffer massive breakage
  • never took vitamins
  • never heard of the baggy method
  • overloaded my hair with protein
  • was too rough with my hair

Victorious, I hope you dont mind I used your list and kept adding. Thanks.

Before LHCF I...
  • relaxed every 6 weeks

  • Curled dirty hair. (I wasn't going to wash it again just to flat iron)
  • Didnt use a ceramic Flat Iron or Curling Iron
  • washed hair every two weeks (or even once a month if I miss my appt.)
  • constantly had a dry and itchy scalp

  • Clarifying
  • Porosity control

  • Henna or any Indian hair products
  • Reading ingredients
  • My hair is great if I get the right products to style it
  • Balancing Moist & protein
  • Thickening my hair
  • Air drying without looking like a bush
  • when my hair is missing moist or protein
  • bagging or protective styles
  • Natural products to mix with conditioners
Never wore a satin bonnet at night
Wao, thank you guys, I guess I didn't know anything about my hair:)

I did not know anything about:

Clarifying
Hard water
Porosity control
Cowashing
Sealing
Cones (and which ones not to use)
Henna or any Indian hair products
Balancing moisture and protein (well actually I rarely used any kind of conditioner.
Stretching or transisting even tho I did them both at least 7X. :D
Touch-ups

Before LHCF I:

Never used a moisturizing conditioner
Never used a leave-in
Never had a real trim
Relaxed my whole head instead of just the ng
Kept my hair in braids for 4 months without rebraiding them
Ripped thru my hair instead of being gentle
Used cotton scarves to cover my hair
Relaxed and colored my hair with a permanent color on the sale day
Just didn't take care of it!

-I used the neutrelizing shampoo from the perm box as my 'regular' shampoo.

-I thought all shampoos did the same thing/were just made out of regular soap in liquid form.

-blow dried my hair with the comb attachment and curled every morning.

-washed my hair every 2 weeks, much longer if I had braids in.

- used rubber bands as ponytail holders.

-applied perm from root to tip at every application.

- left perm on at least 40 minutes so that it would 'take'.

-moisturized my hair with GREASE

-believed that only products with black people on the cover were good for my hair.

-believed that my hair was tough and could sustain anything (it kinda was)

-wore wigs without a wig cap

  1. Trusted the stylist judgment on the condition of my hair.
  2. Relaxed my hair like clockwork every 4 weeks. Didn't like the frizzies!
  3. Would comb the relaxer through just to make sure it was extra straight!
I'm so grateful for LHCF!

Before LHCF...

1. Didn't know anything about protein
2. Thought "grease" was what my hair needed.
3. Never washed my hair at home
4. Thought that my hair would never grow beyond shoulder length (er... still waiting... but you know what I mean)
5. Thought that there were "black products" and "white products."
6. Had not heard of my precious silicon mix or vatika oil
7. Didn't know what co-washing was.
8. Spent $$.$$ at the hair dresser, only to ask what I could do to improve my hair. She said "Wash once between relaxers."
9. Didn't know you could get dryers for home use and thought the dryers were between $1,000 - $3,000.
10. Didn't know I had to pay special attention to my ends.
11. Thought my breakage was "seasonal only" and that one day my hair would magically stop breaking off.
12. Got tired of telling people I "couldn't wash my hair"
13. Thought rollersets included tons and tons of setting lotion and sleeping on uncomfortable rollres all night long.
14. Thought women with long hair were "lucky" - I never paid any attention to the health of their hair.
15. Didn't know any fabulous, beautiful, uplifting women serious about taking care of themselves and their hair! :)

The three positive things I did:

1. Get a relaxer every 8 - 10 weeks (mostly out of being lazy)
2. Never ever used heat (of course I never washed my hair either!!!)
3. Knew that trimming did NOT make my hair grow!

1. Never heard of a protein treatment
2. Only deep conditioned after a relaxer
3. Relaxed every six weeks
4. Never wore a satin bonnet at night
5. Never used a leave-in conditioner
6. Didn't moisturize my hair enough

oooh, I have a few more-

-Would slather Blue Magic Bergamont on my hair and then wonder why it never had any movement
- Would use this same grease to press my hair
- Never used a deep conditioner or hot oil treatment
-Protein? Fuhget about it.
- Used a rat tail home to comb the front of my hair
-Never considered going natural

I forgot to add

I thought I was doing something by sleeping with a cotton bandana
Always greased my scalp and hair would never move in the wind
applied relaxer thru the entire head.

  • thought that leaving conditioner on hair for 5 minutes was DC
  • flat ironed my hair every morning to bump the ends
  • never knew to seal in moisture
  • never used a leave in, ever
  • wore hair out each and every single day
