Ok ladies!
Im another undercover lurker and i have finally subscribed! yay mee :drunk: I was transitioning for about two years with weaves n now i have been natural for 10 months now.

Since ive grown the balls to wear my own hair out i have never straighten my hair. I have blow dried it (once) and it is about shoulder length. I want to straighten it (especially since the summer heat is dying down) but Ive been questioning on whether i should do it at a salon or do my research on LHCF n just do it myself.

My cousin (who is also natural) said i should NOT try doing it on my own but others say no one will care for ur hair the way u would so do it yourself :perplexed

which is best? :ohwell:

I would do it myself because I'm paranoid! I'd rather blame myself than pay for someone to potentially mess up my hair. I'll be straightening my hair for the first time since being natural (six years) this winter, too.

Welcome to the board!

I would do it myself. The last time I went to the salon was 2009 to relax my hair and the stylist was on the phone whilst doing my hair ; I regretted it. the point is you cannot control what the stylist does but you can control what you do to your hair such as preventing heat damage and you save money.Am now 17 months natural (past SL); I do everything myself, even trimming with the help of ladies on here. My hair is looking fantastic as I get comment all the time.

do it yourself first.
Ive "flattenend" LOL my hair twice now, first time (Jan 2011) I tried only on low heat just to test out my technique.

second time (2 months later) I went a little higher result was much better.

thing is I would want to know exactly what heat setting, the right amount of heat protectant etc that my hair needs so I can tell the styist what to do.

If I ever go to my stylist to flat iron you best believe they will be using my flat iron and not their marcel !!

Yeah i was considering doing it myself because of the fact that i wont kill my hair (not purposely! lol)
ill post pics when i do it!

Yourself.

Just because they are in a salon doesn't mean you can't incur heat damage.

I would be more pissed at someone if they damaged my hair than myself.

Make sure you use a super moisturizing DC. I would post a link to my youtube tutorial, but I'll prob be banned again.

@westNDNbeauty, why would you be banned? I never knew you were banned. You and your videos are beautiful. *confused*

Sorry, to digress OP. DO IT YO'SELF! LOL! I used CAPS LOCK and BOLD to make my point more clear.

TBH, lately I've been a YT-ho just watching naturals straighten their hair. One of them being our very own WestNDNBeauty. I don't even have a good blow dryer (other than the one I use on my Pomeranian) and don't even have a flat iron but when I get my tools together, I am confident I will do a good job!

Good luck and PLEASE POST PICS! We need them to survive in this forum, LOL!

I would not do my first flat iron myself. Just a friend or acquaintance that you trust w/hair should do. Hair stylists are too scissor happy. They tend to bully or bribe people into cuts disguised as trims. A friend who is good w/hair and has no agenda (and no scissors) makes your first nerve racking experience go much more smoothly until you get the hang of it.

Off topic I asked a youtube posters why they have ads now. I find it odd, I can never get used to commercials on the computer. I don't watch videos w/adds.

OP have you never flatironed your hair before or have you never flatironed your natural hair before? Either way, I think you should do you own hair.

I made the mistake of listening to another natural when I first went natural and the stylist was horrible. Luckily my hair did not suffer too much of a setback. I have been a DIYer ever since.
