Been a couple years since I\'ve taken vitamins.

I know what you are thinking. Im so embarrassed. I have been living in new york for about five years now, i moved here from my little country of Belize. Anyway i stumbled along this forum and had no idea it would be so informative. I have not been taking vitamins and dont remember the last time i have had any. anyway long story short I am running out to GNC this weekend so please give me your recommendations on a mulitvitamin and vitamins that will promote good hair growth. I've seen a number of them but just want to make sure i take the right combination.

Welcome Raslat!

I am currently taking Freeda brand biotin. I take 10mg for 2 weeks and 5mg for 2 weeks. My hair growth has increased. I can't say by how much because I don't measure. This is one of the brands you will often hear about on the board.
You can order these from www.freedavitamins.com. HTH(Hope This Helps)

Welcome to the forum! I had to respond because you are from Belize! My hubby is from Belmopan, Belize. We're planning on going back there one day. Anyway, back to your question. I only take a multi and biotin. My mulit is GNC's Ultra Mega Gold and my biotin is from Puritans Pride. The mulit has everything needed for healthy hair growth, i.e. proteins, minerals. You only need to take two a day. However, it doesn't contain MSM, which is said to extend the growth cycle and make the hair grow in softer. So, you might want to take the MSM seperately. I take 4mg of biotin. You'll have to experiment with the dosage for biotin, because everyone is diffent. Some folks take less some more to see results. The combo is working out very well for me

. Good luck finding what will work for you.

Re: Been a couple years since I\'ve taken vitamins.

Raslat, I'd say get an all round multi vitamin like GNC Ultra Mega Gold so you get all the nutrients your whole body needs. Then you can add on the hair nutrients we're all crazy about, depending on your pocket and priorities. These include:

- biotin (and Freeda is an excellent choice, judging from the raves on the forum). Grows hair and can stop hair loss if you suffer from alopecia. Biotin works best with niacin so if you take a multi you're probably already getting that so you're on a roll.

- MSM works best with vitamin C and there are formulas of the two mixed. But as long as you're on a multi, your C is being provided so you can just get the plain one. Many people like the powder (I take capsules coz they are easier to take). I take 2000 - 3000 mg (that's three 1000-mg spaced out in the day). I don't know of any side-effects so you can take whatever. But just know excesses get flushed out of your system so it's a waste.

- Silica or Horsetail - supposed to help with shiny strong hair.

- B5 is supposed to help with thick hair. But the whole bunch of B vitamins (which your multi provides) is important for healthy hair growth.

L-Cysteine (or amino acids in general; many people take a protein shake) - those taking it have raved of improved growth and it's supposed to be good for the quality of hair too.

- Essential fatty acids - Omega 3, 6, 9...especially more of Omega 3 since we get 6 easily from our diet. Flaxseed oil and Evening Primrose Oil are good sources. So are Fish Oils supplements or just oily fish in the diet. Will help with improving hair texture and prevent you from having dry, brittle hair.

If you do a search on the hair forum for those supplements, you'll see what people think of them on what results they get so that you can decide on which ones to add to your multi. Hair multis are great to get as your only multi if you know you're eating a well-balanced diversified diet. That would mean you are getting the nutrients your body needs from food and so you can focus on just pampering your hair. The good thing about hair multis is the important nutrients are combined for you in a way that works best for that formula...so no need to buy singles. So if all you need to add to your diet is hair-related boosters, I say go for just a multi. But if you need an all rounder, then do it the way I suggested above. Coz if your body isn't getting what it needs, any hair supps you take will be hogged by your body and your hair will never "see" them.

There are folks who take both a regular multi as well as a hair multi. You have to be careful doing it this way that you don't exceed what's considered a safe quantity for each multi. (Do a search on "toxicity" or "toxic" to find info on this.) For instance, too much vitamin A can lead to hairloss and that alone is scary enough!

Some people do get great hair growth results from just taking a general multi period (ie no additional hair supps) or from just eating well, so it's not unthinkable that you haven't taken any supplements until now. Just don't expect overnight results when you start. Patience and consistency is the key. And by the way, you don't need to take all these supps to see results coz a lot of it depends on what it is your hair was lacking. Your diet may have been providing enough of one supplement and less than enough of another. So it does sometimes take trial and error to find out what makes a difference for you. Also, some brands are more soluble than others so get absorbed by your body more easily.

Good luck. Let us know in a few months whether adding supplements makes a difference in your hair growth.
