Badly Breaking hair.. What can I do?

So tonight I did a light protein treatment. I used some conditoner mixed with an egg and some amla oil because I have some major breakage.. I mean MAJOR breakage.. Short strands in the middle of my head to the point where I think I should chop it all off.. I thought that the mix would help but it seems it made it worse.. I have tried everything from NEXXUS EMERGENCEE to APHOGEE and nothing is working.. My hair so weak when wet that the strands just pop.:nono:

Can anyone give me some advice as to what do and what may be the problem?

I can't really help you but I would suggest adding more information about your usual regimen and when you first noticed the breakage. That way it'll be easier for others to help you.

I used to have this problem... every day there would be handfuls of broken pieces of hair all over the bathroom sink. :nono: Over the course of three years, though I never cut my hair, I actually LOST 2 or 3 inches.

What helped me was DC'ing very often, sometimes overnight... using olive oil as a hot oil treatment... and using Herbal Essences "Long Term Relationship" conditioner for cowashing.

I wish I could offer more advice than that, but those things really helped my breakage. Hope this helps! Herbal Essences LTR is pretty awesome actually... and it smells good too.

Do you use hot oil treatments? How often do you DC? Do you DC with heat?

No I havent done any hot oil treatments in awhile and I DC once maybe twice a week with heat. And is the Herbal Essence thick?

The LTR one is kinda thick... The "Break's Over" line is the thickest conditioner that they offer. I like it a lot.

I would try some hot oil treatments. They make my hair reallllly happy!

Are you following up your protein treatments with a good moisturizing DCing? If not, that could be why you are having major breakage. HTHs.

devils advocate. You say breaking off, not soft or mushy. Maybe you're doing too much protein. You need a strong DC (w/o protein) aubrey organics makes some good ones (whole foods) shescentit.com also has some good ones (however it seems like you need relief now). I'd do the hot oil, or an oil preepoo, and then shampoo and then an oil rinse with coconut oil and then condition and dc. Infuse your hair with moisture! Also when you finish make sure you have a good moisture and oil to seal. I say dc with coconut oil as it actually enters the strands, unlike most other oils. Good luck!

When my hair was breaking due to color damage, I sought professional help from a stylist. She used a keracare 5 in 1 repair/strength conditioner mixed with a moisturizing cond to stop the breakage/shedding. I think this is part of the Avalon/Keracare relaxer system. I haven't seen it sold individually, but a JcPenney salon stylist would have access to this treatment and could apply it for you. I hope things get better soon.

I agree with luckiestdestiny that you prob need moisture (a conditioner to DC with NO protein in it) and will for a while due to a protein overload, especially if you said doing an additional protein treatment made it WORSE following 2 other treatments.

IMO, the logical thing would be to turn to moisture. I also don't think trying 1 moisturizing conditioner to solve the issue then giving up on that route after having done 3 hard protein treatments is pragmatic. I think you should try doing it again, with a different conditioner. I can recommend a few, but none I have tried myself that I know of to go out and just buy in a BSS or a beauty aisle (I only want to recommend things I've tried). I am sure others can make good recommendations, though.

You always have some good advice.. I put some coconut oil in my dc lastnight. But im definitely gonna try a hot oil treatment maybe the Alter Ego Garlic. And whats an OIL RINSE? And I went to homedepot to buy a shower filter by GE and I dont know how to put the darn thing up:nono:

I agree with others. It sounds like you have protein overload. You may want to try just straight moisture. I like Redkin All Soft heavy cream. It is really good and you can use it as a DC too. I know when I need some moisture, I use that and it helps a lot. HTH

Sound like you should leave the protein alone and concentrate on moisture. I have actually started doing what Luckiestdestiny suggested in her post. Especially since winter is here my hair is oh so dry. Moisture! Moisture! Moisture!

This information really helps me as well. I don't think I have any conditioner or shampoo in my house that's protein free. I know I have the Garlic SHampoo and Conditioner, when I was using Mega Tek which is low on protein and helps with the shedding, but not the breakage.

Also, thanks for the Coconut Oil suggestion for the Hot Oil treatment. I think I'll be spending some time under the dryer this weekend.
