Bad Hair Day Blues

I conditioner-washed my hair last night, dried straight down under the bonnet dryer (cool setting) using a little leave-in conditioner and serum, flat-ironed with my ceramic iron using ION heat protectant and . . . ended up with big mushroom hair  . I wanted to call in :ill: so badly. It looks like a UFO has landed right smack in the middle of my head, no lie :( . On Friday when I did my touch-up, I rollerset my hair afterwards and the results, as far as my ends are concerned, were drastically different. My ends looked great instead of frizzy like they do now. The fact that my hair is not relaxed bone straight is not helping. God forbid I walk past a glass of water or any form of humidity, I will REALLY be in trouble.

I tried to save time by eliminating the rollers but if I have to do it to avoid looking like helmet-head then it's a must!

Will I be able to correct this with a dry rollerset or do I have to wash and do the entire routine again, the right way? :perplexed. I have never tried a dry rollerset on rebellious hair.

Please help. I am really sad about this trial and error thing . . . Meanwhile I will attempt to locate a paperbag to hide my humiliation.

I agree with Baglady, I think you need to at least wet your hair to get the result you want.

Sorry you're having a bad hair day. This is the reason I keep clips and scrunchies in my desk in case I gotta make an emergency bun or ponytail. I've had enough bad hair days for eveyone on this board. I would go home and start all over. Hope ya feel better!

Thanks ladies for your support. I was hoping I didn't have to start from scratch seeing that my roommate already thinks I have LOST MY MIND with all the conditioner-washes and pile-up from testing new products. Another night of "vanity", *sigh*

In future, is there any other way to get silky smooth ends without rollersetting?

I would start all over again as well. I think the problem may be that you dried straight down. I would try drying in a ponytail maybe. Just wash you hair, add your leave-in and moisturizer and pull hair into ponytail. You can sit under the dryer if you want, I let it airdry mostly and then blowdried on cool for a few minutes before flatironing. This will help get your hair straight but because it's pulled back you'll avoid the big mushroom look. I did this last weekend when I wanted to flatiron my hair and it worked, my ends were soft and moisturized and my hair wasn't big either. I started with a conditioner wash as well. I think it will work for you because you just had a touch up and im 9 months post relaxer. Try it and let me know how it turns out.

Thanks! You were right on time, I was just about to post this:

My hair looks fluffy.

I don't know how else to describe it but it just looks fluffy. I didn't rewash my hair last night b/c by the time I got off work and finished grocery shopping, it was too late. Instead I spritzed my hair with water and added a little Protective Healthy Ends to the ends and rolled it up. This morning I have more curl definition but still the frizzy mushroom look.

I want "polished" curls that look like I went to salon and got a rollerset that was wrapped so tight my strands turned into 1 hair type
from all the tension. How do you ladies get those smooth curls that look like you flat-ironed your hair on the hottest heat setting? I also want bounce but hold. Right now I keep having to bump my mushroom up with my hands (whenever I run my fingers through my hair, the curls fall). I am sure people think my hair is pressed the way it's been behaving. I WANT SILKY CURLS DAMMUT!!!!!

Hopeless like a penny with a hole in it. :D

But you answered my question above. I will go home and try this. I hope I have time tonight because I can't stand another day of this madness.

:lachen: I don't mean to laugh but the way you posted that is killing me.

I really don't know about dry rollersets so maybe someone can help on that one, I always start with just washed hair. But to get my curls to stay I have to use some sort of setting lotion. I like Pantene R/N wrap and setting lotion. Some people mix their's with water cause they say their hair comes out crispy but I don't have that problem I just spray as is. I also make sure to roll the roller as taut as possible. That helps to really define and hold the curl. I don't wrap or use a comb to comb my hair either. I find that combing, for me, leads to frizz and takes some of the curl out of my hair. I would sleep with my hair in two really high pigtails or I would flip all my hair to the front and put a bonnet over it. In the morning I usually just finger comb to get it to look like I want. For me doing this helps to keeps the curls longer, more defined, and also keep the bounce and volume in your hair. Also what products are you using? I find that sometimes it's finding the right combination of products that will help get that silky look. HTH.

It's supposed to be funny. Laughter is the best medicine and right about now 'I'm is sick of this hair'. Anyhow, great tips! You can see I am new to this whole hair thing (fairly anyway).

Products I am going to use tonight: Conditioner-wash w/ NTM Daily Deep Conditioner, add NTM Leave-in Conditioner, add NTM Serum, use rollers.

I will try the setting lotion (I have the Pantene one actually) and see where that gets me. So . . . ponytail with rollers on the ends + light blow dry + ceramic flat iron or rollers alone? BTW, my roots don't look texrelaxed AT ALL. They look like I am six weeks post relaxer so they need help too.

I actually do a couple ponytails so don't you have to do just one. I think your roots should be fine because you'll have your hair in ponytails so that should help to straighten them or you can lightly blow them with the blowdryer. The flatiron for me is optional. I am dealing with a lot more new growth than you so I needed it. Let me know how it turns out, I started doing this cause I couldn't rollerset any other way. There was a whole big thread about the ponytail rollerset method a while back, you can use the search option to find it. Also have you thought about using different rollers? I like the ponytail method but I really like using flexi rods. You get gorgeous curls, bounce and the style lasts. I think your products are good, I actually use NTM as well.
