AYURVEDA BY TIME OF DAY

Well not all Ayurveda. Has anyone using Ayurveda herbs, essential oils, etc. noticed that you must use them at a certain time of day because they make you too alert or sleepy. I recently started adding powdered, Fenugreek,Nettle,& Horsetail. to my cond., I found out the hard way I shouldn't have done this at night. I'm already an insomniac and I didn't get to sleep till 4:30 am! I don't know if was one or all of these herbs that caused this, I believe it was the horsetail because of the nicotine, needless to say I would like to pinpoint it so I could use the other 2 at night. On the flip side when I do a scalp massage with my Brahmi, Bhringraj, Alma oil I get a sound night's sleep, because the Bhringraj helps promote relaxation & sleep. Ditto when I do them in cond. or as a tea. I have Rosemary oil & I'm not sure where to fit this in. I'm thinking in my moisturizer I use to slick my hair back with IN THE MORNING, any feedback?????

Don't have any feedback, but I am new to LHCF & I am interested in Vitika oil & Amla & Bhrami powders. Besides the sleepless nights:sad:, how r they improving your hair?

Overall I looooove Ayurveda!! My hair has improved a ton in terms of thickness, moisture, strengh etc. I have only been using the Fenugreek, Nettle, and Horsetail about a month. I feel like it's contribiting to my growth...... I took a progress pic in on Dec. 1st. I'm taking another one tonight to see if kicking up up my Ayurveda game made a difference. The oils & powders you mentioned are wonderful and they don't keep you awake. Check out these threads...

I actually just finished with my herbal rinse....but I've done this in the morning, afternoon and evenings and have never noticed a difference in my sleep pattern.

That's good to know! I want thick hair for the '09. So far I have used castor oil & HoneyComb Hair Rejuvenator by Komaza. I will read the rest of the threads you posted before I decide which ones will work best for me.

I haven't noticed any sleeplessness when using these powders or EO's. Do you drink a lot of soda, coffee, tea?

Nope, no soda, coffee, or tea, I seem to be sensitive to any type of stimulant. I read where Rosemary increases mental alertness, this is what's got me afraid to use it at night..... I only cw with the Nettle, Fenugreek,& Horsetail in the day now, and within a few minutes of my cond. pack sitting on I notice how it wakes me up a bit. On the flip side if you read the benefits of Bhringraj, Bhrami oils, one of them is promotes sleep, so I mostly use these at night. http://www.naturalbeautyworkshop.com/my_weblog/2008/03/brahmi-oil.html

Well Brahmi is used in Ayurveda for mediation and to revitalize the mind and Bhringaraj is used in Ayurveda to treat insomnia and promote sound sleep so I always use those 2 oils at night. Brahmi is also used to increase mental alertness but it doesn't seem to disrupt my sleep at all.

When I do my vedic tea rinse I will also throw in some other herbs such as horsetail, nettle, ginger, rosemary, fenugreek, Gotu Kola, burdock etc. Whenever I use rosemary, nettle, ginger or peppermint (stimulating herbs) I do feel very much alert so I prefer to use those in the day or hours before bedtime.

It could be the Nettle. Nettle is used to increase blood circulation and strengthen the adrenal glands, so it would make sense that you would feel more alert after a using it for your co wash (you are essentially massaging the head with it)

Thanks sooo much, I knew I wasn't crazy, so I was correct in using my Rosemary in my daytime cowash?? And if Nettle is the culprit ( in keeping me up when I do it at night) You think it's still ok to try adding the Fenugreek & Horsetail at night??

You're welcome.

Yes I think that you should be fine with just the fenugreek and horstail at night and nettle in the day.... although there is no way to be sure as herbs have a different effect on each individual.

Horsetail in high doses can be used as a sedative and does not contain stimulating properities that I know of (would have to dbl check to be sure). As for feenugreek I used to take it before bed for lactation and I had no problems sleeping. HTH :)
