at home coloring, how often do you touch up?

for those that use box-color, how often do you touch up your hair? i recently started doing my own color last year, using the clairol texture's and tone's cherrywood. i last touched up my hair october, so i'm going on 5 months now. just wondering if there is any particular schedule. also, do you smooth the color along the length of the hair, or just the roots only? thanks!

Depends usually Twice a year, I colour then highlight two weeks later(only highlight once a year) I usually do just my roots, then run it through to mid length when there's 5 minutes left. I use my aveda dr intensive treatment afterwards.
