Are there naturals (past SL) who wash their hair loose?

My hair is APL, and I will usually wash my hair loose without sections because it's easier and saves time and water usage. I really haven't seen a difference in washing with sections when it comes to matting and tangles...it just takes longer to wash and detangle my hair in sections. I allow the water from the showerhead to keep my hair stretched out and flexible enough for easy detangling. When I get out of the shower and prepare for styling, that's when I start sectioning my hair.

I do it in sections. I just recently started dcing on dry hair. Then I leave the scalp slack and braid the rest. I leave it slack so I can get access to my scalp. Then I wash, and let it airdry a bit in the same braids then style. Hair is already detangled from when I dc'd.

Yes I have and when I do, it's murder! I can only wash in sections. Less time to detangle is a MUST! Less manipulation during detangling is a MUST!

Less, is more!:yep:

Same here, my hair is like Velcro washing it loose is asking for trouble

I wash my hair in sections and with all of the untwisting and retwisting, it takes an eternity! The last time I washed my hair loose was by accident. I was rinsing out some henna and the water knock out my twists. My hair was sooooo tangled.

Maybe the folks in this thread have a hair type that can be washed loose with no problem but I am not among that lot. I have to be in control of my hair throughout the entire wash process. I cannot just let it be loose unattended.

The longest length I have is past shoulder, stretched.

I wash it loose. I've been doing that from BC - present. I figure if it ain't broke, why fix it?

I co-wash loose but shampooing loose=HELL. Shampooing in sections=close to hell. I now ONLY shampoo in 8-12 braids and detangle afterwards as I apply my leave ins. Detangling is simpler this way and I have no trouble getting to my scalp.

I also wash semi loose. I keep four clips in the shower and use them to hold back the other quadrants while I work with one to apply conditioner (fine strands, densely packed) at a time. I let it sit while I bathe and then rinse one by one. Only adds a few minutes to a normal shower.

Ths is exactly what i do.
i see alot of you ladies apply condish before to detangle and after you wash to dc? is that right?

Another issue I forgot to mention from the post which reminds me was, I think my hair and scalp doesn't get clean enough with the braid/twist method. I only shampoo wash once a week, and sometimes co-wash twice a week so I know my scalp has build up on it. I never actually wash my hair, I only clean my scalp, and whatever suds from the shampoo that runs down actually washes my hair.

That's another downside for me when doing the braid/twist method.

im APL and b/c my hair is so thick, i still wash it loose, but in halves. i clip 1/2 up and wash the other 1/2, then switch. i also apply my regular rinse out conditioner in halves, but unclip the other side when i rinse. i apply DCs and leave-ins in smaller sections to make sure every strand is covered.

I LOVE washing loose. I wear my hair up and away most of time, so it's very refreshing to let it down and play with it when I wash/condition.

Ok, this is a stick-up. Give me your hair and no one will get hurt. :sekret:

I've always washed my hair loose. My hair isn't particularly tangly unless I need a trim. That's the only time I really see SSKs. I typically shampoo once a week. I don't cowash.

I tried washing in sections/braids/twists but it took so long one time that my water turned cold and my hair didn't feel that clean.

I wash my hair loose and I love it. My hair is kinky, thick, and has tons of shrinkage. But, in the shower the water pressure makes the hair hang making it easier to detangle. I am MBL/grazing waist length BTW.

im natural and my hair is almost wl. i wash my hair loose. in fact i have never washed my hair in sections. thats too much work lmao.
i have no issues with tangling from doing it this way and my hair hangs when its wet so the if im standing right under the shower head that helps prevent tangles too. if you have the type of hair that stands up even when wet and coild up on itself even after you detangle then i think washing and conditioning in section it beneficial to you.
if i had issues with tangling the first thing i would start doing is sectioning.

also if all you wear are braids and twists then washing in sections should be easy anyway.

Those who wash in braids/twist could you explain how it benefits you?

-well I used to wash in braids or twists. I would do about 10 large twists. I would detangle w/ cheap condish & oil out of the shower.
Once in the shower, I put my twists in 4 sections. I then would unravel each twist, shampoo, while the poo was still on, squeeze out the excess, then apply condish, and move on to the next one.

Once done, I just rinse thoroughly and let air dry.

Now that I am NOT using shampoo on the regular, I don't have to do that.
I use Terressentials mud wash, leftcoast lemon and sometimes the mint. That stuff has slip that's out of this world for me.

No more pre-detangling. I just wet my hair, apply the mud, let it sit while I wash, and finger detangle in the shower. My entire wash routine for hair takes less then 10 min, and my hair is completely tangle free. I have been doing this for several months, and I love it!

I wash my hair loose. I don't feel like my hair is clean when I wash it in twists. I also workout and I don't like to think that I am not getting my completely clean.

From the pic in your avatar, you already look WL to me. :)

Also, I wash my hair loose, but only work with my hair one half at a time.

I am SL and my hair does NOT hang, at all, ever  So i cannot wash my hair loose. It's not so much that my hair tangles, but more that it will shrink to 2" of its life. And trying to stretch that 2" back out to 7" is a pain.

So I do everything in sections. I don't really do braids or twists because when water hits my braids/twists unravel. But I do clip my hair up into 4 to 6 sections so I can keep it stretched and separated.

I am MBL and I wash my hair loose and in sections. My hair is very thick at the root and tangles easily so it makes sense for me to wash in sections. I section before I get in the shower and usually have already detangled so I'm in an out in a fair amount of time. Lately I've been removing my 4 clips and rinsing the conditioner out all at once. It is easy to put my hair back in sections when I get out for my leave-in.

I am currently MBL; I've been natural for 4 years.

If you had asked me a month ago if I washed my hair loose, I would have laughed out loud because I have been washing in sections for about 3 years.

However, for the past month I have been washing it loose and have absolutely no problems with tangling or knots.

I saturate my hair with Tresemme or VO5 conditioner, then stand under the water while running my fingers gently through my hair in order to remove shed hair. The tangles fall right out :yep: . Then I use 'poo (Alaffia Beautiful Curls Shampoo) on my scalp, rinse, apply Joico Moisture Recovery Conditioner to my ends, rinse, then jump out!

I'm in and out of the shower this way  and my hair can easily be sectioned and detangled.

Yes, good topic. it's always interesting to revisit one of the methods from the Natural Girl's Bible and validate its effectiveness.

i'm really surprised that so many med-long haired naturals are washing loose.

because i'm entirely lazy with my hair. and if i could wash loose i definitely would. but i've tried. on multiple occaisions... and i just can not.

i wash while in twists (not a special set of twists for the wash only... i cowash several times a week so the twists are just there) or if i have to redo my twists anyway then i would have DC'd on dry hair, detangled, then section my hair into 4 very (very) loose plaits or twists to wash. i find that if i don't section i just don't end up w/ clean hair. i miss parts. but worse, my hair shrinks up su'm bad so i would have to detangle after my pre-wash detangle. and because i'm now a no-comber having to deal w/ a full head of coarse shrinky hair is just :nono:

caveat: mud wash is a game changer tho. i'm not as concerned about washing loose when i use the mudwash. i still don't make a habit of going loose when i'm using it, but i have tried it on a few occasions and my hair remained detangled with some slip after. so maybe it's also a product thing
/*kanyeshrug.

I stopped washing my hair loose when I got past SL...I am MBL. Now, I wash my hair in twist/braids. Its so much easier and quicker for someone like me, who lacks patience towards hair. :look:

I use braids to keep my hair sectioned during the wash process.

I section my hair they way I plan to roller set it (I use the mohawk method). I comb out all shed hair for each section and braid before I add my prepoo conditioner. Once I'm in the shower I add shampoo to the scalp and undo one each braid massage scalp and shampoo hair in a downward motion. I then comb through that section ends to roots, rinse, re-braid and move to the next section until I'm done.

I apply my deep conditioner in the same manner when I get out of the shower. This method has worked wonders for my hair. It has greatly reduced the amount of shed hair because the braids keep my hair in stretched state and prevents tangles.

HTH

ETA: I know MsKibbi and Reneice use similiar methods. You can check their youtube channels for more info.

From reading TONS of responses it seems like most of the ladies do what works for them. It's good to know we can pretty much wash loose or twisted/braided (which I have washed my hair this way too) and still retain length :)!
