Are there any "Bone Strait" Ladies that retain length without heat in their regimens?

I ask because, first and foremost I'd like to be able to better help the women in my family that wear their hair bone strait.

Second I'd also like to see if it is a viable option for me once I decide my hair's chemical future in October.

If you relax bone straight and retain length, could you please list your regimens or "Girl Don't/Do Its"?

When I WAS bone strait, I wasn't taking care of my own hair. So there is a void in my knowledge concerning its care.

I do alot of cowashes, braidouts, and buns. Especially in this summer heat. You can see my fotki [link in siggy] for my full regimen.

Thanks for the speedy reply! Do you think stretching is important? I'm trying to explain why it is useful.

I'm a bone straight, no heat girl. I shampoo and condition once a week and in between each of those I condition without shampooing. (fave products are in my signature) In the winter, it's one or the other each week but not both. If my hair is moisturized well by conditioning, then I do fine with just using jojoba oil, coconut, or safflower between wash days.

I airdry mostly. In winter, I sit under a hooded dryer for 10-15 minutes and then air dry. Occasionally, I flat iron my air dried hair. (3-4 times/year)

I relax every 10-12 weeks with a Mizani Sodium Hydroxide realxer, mild I believe, but could really use regular because I do get some underprocessed sections sometimes.

I may go for a longer stretch some time in the near future.

ETA: I use a blow dryer about once a year.

Some people don't, but I definitely do. It helps me retain my thickness, and until I perfect my self-relaxing method, overlapping is inevitable. It also gives me one less thing to worry about, because I don't have to worry about relaxing the entire summer, and can just enjoy my vacations:yep: HTH!

eta: I usually stretch for 12 weeks, although I have gone longer, but that's usually only with the help of extensions, which I don't like to wear anymore.

THANK YOU! Your fotki is good one to use as an example!

This may be a dumb question...but...how do you know when you're bone strait while relaxing without melting your hair off?

I think most people just figure out their exact processing time, but I do the underprocess-process. I rinse each one out, and I'm left with the SLIGHTEST little crinkles by the next wash day, and it gets corrected on my next touch-up.

First it was just an accident, but the 2nd time, I just accepted that the relaxer I use is .. kind of weak.:look: And others have said the same ..

Re: Are there any "Bone Strait" Ladies that retain length without heat in their regim

I'm bone straight!

Right now, my reggie is co washing 5 times a week and deep conditioning 2 times a week. I only use heat when I use a hood dryer to dc, and I don't deep condition for less than 45 minutes. My hair can't get enough moisture!

When it starts to get cooler, I'll cut back on co washing to 0-1 times a week, depending on how I feel. I'll keep up the twice a week dc'ing and also start rollersetting again. I'm thinking about getting Vidal Sassoon steam rollers (similar to Caruso's, but are cheaper and work better!) and flexi rods for all kinds of versatility and fun :giggle:

I stretch my relaxers 12 weeks and have seen a huge improvement in my hair since doing so.

To answer your question (how do you know if you're bone straight?) I know I'm because after applying the relaxer, I smooth the HELL outta my hair and leave in on for the recommended time. Never less. For almost all of the processing time, I'm smoothing :look: I can just look at my hair while the relaxer's on, and can tell if it's getting straight enough. My hair always comes out bone straight this way. Especially when I use Slk Elements relaxers, SE don't PLAY!

Re: Are there any "Bone Strait" Ladies that retain length without heat in their regim

Thank you, ladies!:yep:

I don't think I can get anyone else on board with co-washing accept me. I wish I could get some folks I know on the caruso bandwagon. :look:

How do you ladies deal with being SOOO far from your natural texture? Are you ever worried because of life circumstances you may not relax when you usually do and loose hordes of progress?

Re: Are there any "Bone Strait" Ladies that retain length without heat in their regim

Iluv bone strait hair it helps me strengh longer from month to month my hair grow kinda fast.
After my relaxer retouch i just put it back in ponytail cause it want hold one curl and u can see my scalp .
Then i check my scalp to make sure its not underprocess nothin special.

Stretching chemical processes reduces the number of lines of demarcation between previously relaxed hair and touch-ups; lines of demarcation are the weaker areas of hair that are the most prone to breakage.

This is hair relaxed every 6 weeks: ------.------.------.------
This is hair relaxed every 12 weeks: ------------.-------------

Each dot (.) represents the line of demarcation between each touch up. For two different heads of hair of equal length, the one that is relaxed more often will have more lines of demarcation and hence more weak points than the one that is relaxed less frequently.

When the relaxer is not applied as carefully as it should be, you will see even overlap with strands that might look like this: ------.::-----.:-----.:::---

In this example, these dots (::: ) represent areas of overlap, where in addition to applying the relaxer to the new growth, some has gotten on the previously relaxed hair. These more or less wide bands of double-relaxed hair further weaken strands resulting in damage and even breakage before hair can achieve its full growth potential.

With my first stretch I lost a lot of progress. When I joined LHCF I jumped in head first and stretched to twelve weeks when I usually relaxed every 4. My hair rebelled, of course. And I didn't know what to do about the breakage, so I ignored it cause stretching was better for my hair anyway *shrugs* I didn't know anything about co washing, and I was only dc'ing once a week, so I definitely wasn't getting enough moisture.

Now that I'm equipped with what I know, I can stretch for a few extra weeks without seeing tons of breakage if something comes up :yep:

Great explanation!!! I love the dots!
