Are my 'hard' hair problems at home contributed to hard water?

While I was natural my hair was 'ruff' but I always used so much condish, I really couldn't tell

When my sis put my first relaxer in, I literally could not put the comb through while I was in the shower combing through it. No slippery conditioner would penetrate.

Later I tried a clarifying shampoo and it helped a lot, but my hair was still 'hard'

whenever I use my water, I can't style my hair, my rollersets are very very hard to comb out with tons of breakage and shed hair

when I go to the salon, black or dominican, I don't have a problem the comb slides right thru, wet and dried

what could be causing this, would some type of add-on to my shower head help this

TIA

Hey Pearcy, I just posted a question about the keracare demineralizing cloths. They're suppose to remove mineral deposits on the hair. I haven't used them yet but I'll let you know if I notice any difference.

ABSOLUTELY!!! Clarifying doesn't remove mineral buildup. You have to use a chelating shampoo. If you know you have hard water, then anytime you wash your hair at home, you need to use chelating shampoo. Otherwise the buildup of minerals can just dry your hair out and decrease the effectivness of your products.

Thanks! after I use the chelating shampoo, rinse it out and add my conditioner and rinse that out, is the shampoo effective enough to allow my conditioner to work and 'protect' my hair after I rinse out the conditioner. It is a big mess, the shampoo is effective, but once I add condish and rinse the condish out, I am back to square one :( hard gross breaking hair

Consistent use of chelating shampoo's will help your hair withstand minerals better over time. Plus once you use a chelating poo, your conditioner will be able to pentrate better which will help give your hair more moisture that can help counteract effects of mineral buildup. What chelating poo do you have now? You can also look at getting a filter for your shower head. Try home depot.

Perhaps you could use filtered water for the final rinse?

thanks for sharing this. I have noticed that we have hard water and our hair is suffering because of it.

I have this problem at home too... I think it is actually the pipes that the water comes through rather than the water itself because I lived about 15 minutes ago before and never had this problem.

I'm really glad you posted this because it made me realise that my hair was such a tangled mess on my last wash because of the mineral build up and not just because I am 5months post relaxer. I will use my Redken on my next wash, it made my hair soooooo soft the last time, I could actually comb it before I used a conditioner.

I actually got the tip from here....if I find the thread I will post it here.

What chelating poo do you have now?

I use tresemme deep cleansing shampoo first and then follow up with a moisturizing shampoo [last time Abba creme shampoo, before that Matrix Bioloage Hydrating] I recall years ago nc.com saying anything with tetrasodium EDTA, EDTA [period] was considered chelating. Ofcourse that's not HELPING :) so I better get one you all advised.

Thanks for the input everyone gave :)
