Anyone with demon SSKs been able to retain length?

There was a thread on here last month I think, where the person talked about how they reduced them. They were applying oil to ends of sections of the hair and then taking the hair and twisting it clockwise and then counter clockwise to work the oil through. She said she had good results with that method.

Me!

I snip them when they tangle, but usually just leave them alone. I am a BSL 4a natural. Some things that help me:

  • Rolling the ends of my hair (twists, braids, twistouts, etc) on sponge rollers or small magnetic rollers (enlarges the curl diameter, making knots less likely)
  • Not letting hair shrink up into natural tight curls (reduces knots by keeping hair straighter)
  • Keeping shed hair out (reduces tangling, thus reducing knots)

Hope this helps!

What works for me is keeping my hair straight. Special attention to the ends. I can work around puffy roots but those ends need to stay smooth. Anytime I do any type of texture style ie wash n go's or twist/braid outs etc on curly hair I get them.

It was over 100 degrees here in DC last week. I just did not feel like roller setting my hair. I did a wash n go for the 1st in VERY long time and sure enough, I found several on my ends yesterday.

I plan to try doing a twist out on blown out hair and see if that makes a difference.

This knot issue is really the only thing I dislike about my natural hair.

Have you tried a super duper detangling session to get rid of all the knots and shed hair? Maybe try doing that at least once/month. Detangle in smaller sections and take your time.

I like the Ouidad comb and the Tangle Teezer. I have not noticed any breakage with the TT personally.

I noticed more SSKs recently when I did mini-twists, wore them for a few days, then took them down for a twistout and wore that for a few days. I normally do a few big twists (10-12) at night then take them down in the morning. My hair stays detangled much better with the larger twists and I see less SSKs.

Yeah, I've tried that method as well. It was MyJourney2009.

I've just started doing a once a week super detangle session including the 3-comb smooth method from hotcombs.net. Basically, you go through each section with a wide tooth, then a large tooth, then a medium tooth (or fine tooth, but I would never do that with my hair). I think that definitely helps so I will keep doing that. I can't use the TT. Made my ends feel like velcro.

I have done everything u listed and the oil rinsing. Still got em. I live with them. I'll do a S&D every 3 or 4 months, but i still successfully grew from a fade to full SL in a year so i just deal with it and do a little maintenance. Def not gonna hide the hair i grew out over SSKs if i'm still retaining length.

I have learned to live with them, I never wear my hair out anymore and I still get them... I can't seem to beat it so I just snip them as they come... Or rip them off..lol

Conterria, I love, love, love that banded ponytail. Everytime I see your siggy, I'm just drooling.

I think that there is nothing you can do to avoid them. However, I do believe you can minimize them and thats about it.

Yes!!!! They are a pain!!! I find that trimming, oil rinses, protective styling, and staying far away from tiny twist help. They can't be completely eliminated so we have to learn to live with them..lol
