My hair really does not seem to like protein, so I'm doing my best to make sure I'm getting plenty within my diet. I'm a Pescetarian, so that's not always easy, but the alternative for me is really hard hair.

Edit: Except for silk proteins. I use Profectiv and some of their products have them. Silk protein seems to work with my hair nicely. When I used Aphogee, I thought my hair was going to break off.

I never use protein.

My goal is to moisturize as much as possible instead.
I think my hair naturally is rich in protein since it is very strong and coarse.

I had no idea Giovanni's Deeper Moisture had protein in it. Hm. I don't use protein on a consistent basis either. If I use a conditioner that has both moisture and protein, like Giovanni's, my hair is okay with that. When I use something that is pure protein, my hair gets really dry and sometimes, brittle.

I used CHI Keratin Mist the day before yesterday for the first time in a long time. It made a great detangler but after a few minutes, my hair got really dry, and there were knots coming out the wazoo.

It's called Giovanni Smooth as Silk Deeper Moisture conditioner....the silk refers to the silk protein. It actually has a spiel about it on the back and how silk protein is great for helping to moisturize your hair, which is true. That's why I love Oyin Honey Hemp as well, because it has hydrolyzed silk protein.

Yup silk proteins are great.

Here's a post that breaks down the types of proteins and what they do.

I was using the Apoghee product line every week in the beginning. My hair could not stand all of that protein. It was extremely dry, brittle, and my ends were just horrible. Now I use moisturizing products every week and simply do a protein treatment right before or after my relaxer which is about every three months. This has been working out fine for me.

so what products are you all usin? i can hardly find anything without protein in it.

I don't use a protein specific product, just whatever traces of protein are found in the regular products I use seems to be sufficient...I don't find a need to do "protein" treatments.

Same here. I haven't used protein on purpose for about... 7 months. So, whatever protein is in my products, thats what I get. Just short on time. Before that I was doing lemon/sour cream treatments. I liked it, but eh. Could take it or leave it in terms of hair health.

Products: suave pro Shea butter conditioner
Giovanni wellness conditioner (green bottle)
Aussie Hair Insurance
Jane Carter ultra nourish
Evoo
JBCO

I haven't done a protein treatment since I've been natural. IDK if my stylist ever did them when I was relaxed but I don't think so. I was planning to do a treatment with egg after I finish taking my locs out but I'm scared I will damage my hair since I've never needed protein before. Maybe all I need is a trim and not a protein treatment.

I used to think I was a "moisture only" natural, but boy was I wrong. But my DD #2 is very protein sensitive....I often first notice how much protein a product contains because of how her hair reacts to it. The only protein product I've used that seems to agree with her hair is Mane & Tail conditioner. We use the new formula, which is labeled "extra moisturizing", so I wonder if that has something to do with it.

I consume ALOT of protein in my diet. I guess thats why my hair is protein sensitive and I can't do hardcore protein treatments often.

No proteins for me at all. My hair does not miss them and my hair is glad that they are gone! I haven't used any protein on my hair since September 2010.
