I've been researching the life out of henna treatments. I was almost ready to buy some when I realized that I havent read one post where someone was unhappy with their henna experience. My first thought was it must be all that's its cracked up to be. But there's 2 sides to everything.

I'm really excited about doing this but I want the honest to goodness truth from all you lovely ladies who've used it. I'm not tryin' to put anyone on blast, but I need to know! However, If there are no unhappy campers than I'll be placing my order asap. I really trust your opinions out there. TIA

I can tell you what the USUAL unhappy responses are....

1) It dried their hair out too much: This is usually from using too much acid in your mix, or not adding any oil/conditioner to your mix.

2) It's hard to rinse out: This is usually from either a lower wuality henna, or from once again, not adding oil/conditioner.

3) Didn't get much color deposit: I'm a firm believer in leaving henna on for at least 4 hours - ESP. if you aren't using some sort of heat to set it. And of course, the darker your hair is, the harder the color will be to see - but the conditioning effects will usually show up dramatically after the second application.

*bashful grin*

I LOVE henna, but I went a little overboard in the application (10 henna's in 10 weeks) and rather like overdoing a protien application, it made my hair a little 'hard' - but after just skipping one week, and giving myself a deep conditioner - my hair is looking it's best again.

These complaints are the story of my life! My hair hates protien so... Not sure if Henna and I will get along. My first experince was HORRIBLE! Too har dto wash out, made my hair hard, and sticky and made my color even more duller than it was. No shine or sheen... Maybe Ill give it another go another time. I just dont like it when my hair wont rinse... Makes me anxious. Kinda felt like a gritty aphogee treatment. And everyone knows how hard that stuff is to rinse out!

Thanks for the feedback! I'll make sure to look out for the things you mentioned. I dont want people to think I'm trying to create a henna bashing thread, I just want to get all of the information, before I do anything. Thanks again!

I enjoyed how my hair eventually felt after Henna and I will do it again, regularly even, but I cannot do it every week.

I just don't have time.

So my complaint is that it is time consuming. The mixing, applying, waiting, rinsing is too much when you have lots to do.

I think I can fit in a henna treatment once or twice a month only, like a few weeks after a touchup or something like that. It is just too much drama for girls on a serious time budget.

I wasn't sure about my first experience but the problems I hard were from my own making. I used too much acid in my mix and it dried me out. It did make my hair very strong and I have a beautiful color. I will do henna again but I will add alot of oil to my mix. Rinsing out wasn't bad for me, just make sure you use a good quality henna. The results I got were well worth the time.

Girl!! The time crunch - let me tell you how I dealt with that one. I mixed up something like 500g of henna all at once (only the water, acid & henna) - let it set JUST long enough for the dye to release, then put it into 11 ziploc bags (I had 12 portions, but the 12th went on my hair that day). The ziploc bags had all the air squished out of them, and went into the freezer.

When I'm ready to henna, I pull out a bag, pop the frozen henna into my 'mixing bowl' (an old 36 oz yogurt container) and let it thaw - which takes all of 20 minutes. Once it's thawed, I mix in the honey, conditioner, oil, etc, and plop it on my head. If I have stuff to do outside the house, I'll wait til I'm in the house for the night, put it on, and sleep in it - that way I get a GOOD 8-10 hours of henna, without taking up any precious time.

It made henna'ing on a regular basis MUCH easier!!!!

Great thread! Okay, I'm gun-shy about the henna too. One thing that scares me....too much preparation seems to be needed. Can someone tell me just one or two oils/additives that you would recommend to mix with the henna (not counting the terp and water) in order to achieve a moisturizing henna treatment?

You can just add olive or any kind of other oil you wish, or plain ol' conditioner. Some people even add honey.

I guess I have a different view of the preperation...while some think it's alot of work to mix it up, I see it as an adventure. I love to try different mixes each time, and see how much color I get, and how my hair reacts to the different oils, essential oils, waters (distilled, spring, etc) teas, or whatever I feel like throwing in the bowl that day! :D

I'm actually trying to find the right mix of ingredients to give me a nice shiny DARK BROWN color (with subtle red highlights, of course):).

To get a nice dark brown, you'll want to use a mix of henna and indigo...in my mixes I noticed a little alma added in pushed the redness into really dark brown territory.

I loved my henna treatment, the only thing I didn't get was color, why I don't know because I let it sit overnight, but the conditioning was so bangin' I don't even want color now.
It is time consumming, but I learned w/anything if I'm busy that day then I won't be doing it and henna is one of the things on that list. I just wait until it's a free day to just lay around the house, maybe do some laundry or read a book, but Shopping is out of the ?, lol. I missed my treatment this sunday, but no big deal my hair is still enjoying the benefits of the last treatment, but tonight is defiantely the night.

I agree. I look forward to those days, as well.

The weekend of the 21st, my honey is going to be away and I look forward to the alone time. It is going to be my Henna weekend. This will actually be the 1st time I will be using henna and indigo together so I am excited.

this where I get my henna, baq(body art quality) this wont' melt yoru hair if you have a commerical color or chemical in your hair or want to do it. it takes (in most circumstances if you have dark hair) more then one tx to get a color to show up in the sun. that site has education about the henna that you are putting into yoru hair, mixes that others have done, the "types" of henna. go check it out, learn about what you are putting into your hair, so that you can get the benefits and results that you really want :D I love the site, they even have a forum that you can post questions in. Lexie is a real expert in my opinion on that site. Plus they have examples of what mixes look like w/ "the goat" Good luck to you all!:)

Sorry, i havent read all the threads but isnt it just easier to go to an Indian Salon and have the application done? Just wondering. thanks!

oooh, thanks for the tip! I'm so excited!

This is where I got my henna receipe from, :look: , and I used Reshma henna which was great, I'll go and see what they have to say about Reshma henna, but I doubt I'll be ordering henna from them, the cost is just way over the top for me. Thanks.

ditto, you might also think about adding cloves. Cloves will help give you a nice redness with the dark brown. Cloves also helped alot with the smell.

I joined the henna revolution a few weeks ago. I was always interested since the hennaphiliac thread, but just never tried it. My only issues were that it was very messy and I was not prepared for the brightness of the color. I definitely got dye release! But my hair feels good and I intend to do it again. I will get some indigo to bring it down a bit.

One more complaint - I purchased Jamila on-line and it was expensive. However, when I went to pick up some Amla powder from the Indian/Pakistani grocer I saw Jamila at $1.49 per box  Not Happy!

Yes that is a whole lot less, well now ya know they have it in ya area hopefully it works just as good. I wish they had the Jamila at the store I go to, I'm gonna ask one of the sisers I know that does Henna body art if they know where to get Jamila henna because I'm starving to try it, lol.

I was justg thinking this ! The place where i use to get my eyebrows threaded also has a hair salon, I wonder if they do henna... I just can't get with all the mixing and preparing :perplexed

you know, i never even thought of going to an indian type salon. I guess that would be a lot easier to do.

Isnt funny how you get so focused on something specific you dont even consider other alternatives. I have henna hair tunnel vision.
