It seems my hair does not like buns or ponytails! and when I cowash everyday and wear my hair curly, I get those nasty little single strand knots! So Ive been wearing rollersets lately and my hair seems to look and feel much better. So is it possible to keep wearing rollersets and achieve APL?

you know i am realizing this also i already knew my hair didn't like being wet all the time. I think it leaves it in a weakened state all the time and I get more breakage also trying to get that ng to lay down and avoid breakage while is not easy. Also it seems the ends do not like being flat ironed they always look dry and gross the only thing it seems to like is being washed, dc, and rollerset 1x a week and that is exactly what I am going to do b/c that's what works. I think I will use a heat protectant though before rollersetting i think i'm going to use sabino mb. so to make a long story short I think weekly rollersets are fine (even w/o a heat protectant but a heat protectant is probably better) if you're gonna blow it out I don't think that should be done weekly but if you must you should probably get a good heat protectant. Also as an added protection after your rollerset and especially if your hair falls right to your shoulder I would still pin it up b/c the brushing against your shoulders or on your clothing will def cause split ends!! Also I know a boardmember who does exactly that rollerset weekly and has past APL hair!

I hope she doesn't mind me calling her out but her screen name is dream13. If you take a look at her fotki she rollersets weekly and moisturizes daily keeps it simple and has gorgeous hair!! And I don't mind admitting that I totally plan on biting her style!!! I mean everybody's hair does not thrive on cowashes or being wet all the time or stretching or braids so you have to do what works for you!!

I rollerset about twice a week unless I'm just being lazy.

I started out nape length and am now past APL. (have not updated siggy, laziness once again  ) I never have been into protective styles. The bun in my avatar is my quick go-to style if I need to run out of the house to go somewhere and my hair is in need of a wash.

My hair is worn down at least 85% of the town, but when I am in the house my hair is always wrapped or under a bonnet unless I have a guest who I deem worthy of my having my hair undone while in the house.

bump, bump, bump

I need some more answers to this one. I'm at that critical stage as well and I'm sooo anti-protective styles. I can keep my hair up - but NOT hidden!

I find that protective styles don't work for me. However for my mother they took her from a short cut (meaning shaved back and front to the ear) to BSL in 2 years with nothing but. I find that if I rollerset weekly, moisturize daily, roll nightly my hair does alot better in my opinion.

I currently have a twa but before I did my mini chop my hair was apl. I never did protective styles then (I didn't know anything about them then)and I achieved it. I mostly did wraps and I was always careful to seal my ends and sleep with a satin scarf or bonnet. However, if I got lazy with doing these things my ends suffered for it.

I don't wear protective styles and I haven't had any major issues. The only time I had problems was from wearing a puff all the time. The hair at the top of my head is broken because of it as is my hairline so I always have a halo. No more of that though.

I thought I was the only one whose hair didn't like protective styling. I may have to go back to rollersetting my hair more often. Thanks for starting this thread

I have rollerset for years and always retained length even when i have neglected the rest of my routine. During those years i have also become lazy and just blowdried and flat ironed - in those times i found that i always ended up needing an aggressive trim and all my progress went out the window.
I'm now trying my very best to ALWAYS rollerset to get my hair dry and then flat iron 1x a week.

As soon as I stopped protective styling, I went from APL then back to shoulder in about 2 years.....what a shame.:wallbash:

I think you mean dream313, she has such beautiful hair

I stopped wearing protective styles after i passed shoulder length and before i made apl. i usually wear a wash n go ponytail, a dominican blowout or an african american flat iron lol. but i stopped wearing protective styles because i became bored. castor oil on my ends has been my saving grace.

Hey Girly! I don't mind at all. Thanks Chica!

I rarely PS and managed to make it to APL. I wash/dc/pc once a week and either airdry/flatiron or rollerset/hood-dry.

Bumping again. I can't really bun because of my layers, and pulling my hair tight gives me headaches. These day I pretty much tuck my ponies when I'm home, and wrap at bedtime...although I just got satin pillow cases so I won't have to bind my hair so tight at night.

For me, rollersetting is a low-manipulation style (2nd to protective styling). I was able to get from terminal SL to APL that way and I'm rollersetting/bunning my way as close to BSB as possible by Dec 2010.

I think you can make it, it just takes longer because you may have to trim more, but that's fine with me, I rarely PS.

I've never heard the term african american flat iron. Is that a different technique than using a heat protectant and flat ironing?

ETA: Thanks for the thread OP, it comes at the right time for me.

I plan to roller set my way to apl. i do roller sets twice a week. once i reach apl i think i'll be bunning in order to get to bsl and longer.
