Anyone live in hot dry climates? Zero humidity?

Hey all! :waves:

I am going out of town to Texas, the very deep country Texas (Abilene) to visit family in a few months and this will be my second time going as a natural with my hair out (not in Kinky Twists).

My first time wearing my hair natural was in June and it was a disaster! My hair, which usually doesn't shrink too bad, was shrinking while in a puff! I would finish my hair and have a nice puff but, no later than an hour after, ALL my moisture was gone and my hair was a mess! I had curly puffs sticking out everywhere, my friend said she didn't even recognize me with my hair a mess.:nono: Messy hair+ heat = HAM.

I am not going for it this time, so if anyone lives in, almost desert like climate, can you tell me what you use for moisture? I was thinking of getting shea butter and Qhemet Biologics, but wanted to see if you all used something better.

I don't want to braid or twist my hair up with extensions b/c the weave just sucks my moisture out and makes my hair worse. I just want to wear my nautral hair and keep it moisturized. Is this even possible in the desert?:look:

Meeee!!! And its shocking because, here in georgia it's usually not that hot! This is the hottest summer I've witnessed in a LOOOOOONG time, we've been getting 100 degree weather PLUS we're in a drought. It's a necessity for me to keep my hair moisturized or I'll be up the creek

What do you use? And are you natural? I need some help or I am going to be up a creek!

And I am right next to you in SC but, my hair holds up well here and we have lots of humidity! So I don't have to worry much.

I can't tell people natural hair is the way to go and be all dry and flaky!:nono:

i guess this question will bring me out of lurkdom :wavey:: hello all!

I have spent the past 2 years in Las Vegas, and thanks to this board, learned how to keep my situation moisturized, even in the arid heat of Sin City.

Co-washing with a good moisturizing conditioner every other day was a "hair saver". I always add the usual suspects to my "el cheap-o" conditioners to make them even more moisturizing. Sometimes i use them as leave-ins as well.

Additionally, and most importantly, I constantly carried a travel-sized spray bottle filled with my moisturizing mix. This included any combo of EOs, aloe vera juice, distilled water, conditioner and so on. I grabbed those ideas off of the Recipe Board. Probably spritzed my hair 3-6 times during the day, depending on if i was out in the weather a lot. This is in addition to the morning/evening moisturizing i did as well.

Thanks for replying! I wassn't sure if I should take my veggie glyc. mix b/c of the lack of humidity. The glycelrine wouldn't have anything to draw moisture from except my hair.

Does aloe vera work the same way as veg. glyc.? As a humectant?

I tended to NOT add any glycerin actually. There are those occasional rainy/humid days where i could benefit from the Earth's moisture, so i would use a spray containing glycerin. If i were you, i'd bring it just in case, but since Vegas' humidity typically hovers around 10%, i refrained from using it 350 days out of the year. Worked for me.

Good luck girl - i can't STAND dry climates. I love Humidity - yea, I do. I can't stand heat just because. At least with humidity you know why its so darn hot ;-)

How does the mango butter work for you? Would you suggest it?
