Anybody use aloe vera gel to slick down hair?

I sometimes use it on my edges in a pinch. I never experienced any breakage and the hold is pretty light (depends on the brand). Its pretty gentle for me overall.

Same here. Used it for smoothing. But in my case, I've found sometimes it makes my hair straighter (loosens curl somewhat--temporarily). If I use it to smooth and secure an updo, I find when I take it down, my hair is looser/straighter where I used it....weird right?

So I don't use it often. I think it's just because of my hair type. It's weird on the sides and parts of the back.... :perplexed

But breakage? No.

Hth! :wavey:

i use it but the hold is REAL LIGHT.

if you want a heavier hold mix it with some oil and guar gum (fiber you can get at whole foods or online) it makes a GREAT GEL for holding, esp. edges. they have to be wet though for it to really work.

chicoro has a recipe for it, but she uses glycerin. i tweak the recipe. i use my own oils, no glycerin and just a LITTLE guar gum. if you use a very small amount, just enough to make it congeal, you can use it on your whole head. if you follow the recipe as stated, it really only works for edges because the fiber makes flakes in your hair if you put it on the whole head. so i cut the amount of fiber and now i can use it on my whole head. (hope that makes sense)

it's healthier than gel, but nothing beats a gel hold imo.

here is the recipe originally from Chicoro's fotki posted by @meMYSELFandj

"All Natural Homemade Hair Gel

This gel was inspired by Aubrey Organics B5 Gel and the very lovely Gypsycurls from You Tube.

Basic Ingredients:
1. Whole Leaf Aloe Vera Gel (1/4 cup)
2. Oil (1/8 cup) - Any kind will do!
3. Guar Gum (1 teaspoon)
***I Forgot Glycerin!! Oops
4. Glycerin

Pour aloe vera gel into container.
Add oil.
Add guar gum 1 teaspoon at a time.

Keep the mix thin. Messed up? Like Gypsycurls says, "Just add more aloe vera gel to thin it. You can't mess it up"

I say start out with just a small quantity just in case you don't like it. "
