Anybody have any techniques for studying the Bible?

I like to have a good Bible Guide like Daily Bread, and I try to read my Bible at the same time everyday. If you have the money to invest in a commentator it's also good because it'll explain little things that can be confusing. Like Jewish culture, the history of the people you'e reading about, and geography of that region. I also used to take notes, but I don't anymore because I had a lot of paper lying around.

My father's a minister, and he'll do stuff like study the life of one particular person's life e.g. David. I did that once and I enjoyed it. There's a few suggestions, hope that helps!
P.S. I fall off the bandwagon alot myself.

maybe if you get a study bible it will help. my parents bought me one like 10 years ago and i love it...i dont think they make the one i have anymore but its for students and it has commentary in today terms. it helped me so much

I use the GOOD NEWS STUDY BIBLE WITH DEUTEROCANONICALS/APOCRYPHA for explanations. It explains the context of the words, the translation used, the historical setting and it also references you to other books in the Bible.

I have one simular to this called the NIV Study Bible. I paid maybe 25-30 dollars for it off Amazon. Best $25 dollars I've spent--I LOVE that Bible. It has intro, historical setting to every book--and just about every verse has an explanation at the bottom. Here's the amazon link...you can browse through a few of the pages. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/03...3?v=glance&n=283155&n=507846&s=books&v=glance It retails for 40, but you can find it cheaper under "New & Used."

I have several bibles but my favorite is NIV study bible. I read each book as I feel I'm led too. My next bible is going to be an Amplified bible.

If you have a Christian book store at the mall or downtown they'll have a good selection. I went to a church that handed out free 'daily bread' s. It was nice.

I need to purchase a study bible as well. I will definitely check out Amazon. I am trying to come up with a routine.

I'm using The NIV Standard Lesson Commentary. It's a book used to plan Sunday School lessons, but I am gleaning a lot of understanding from this book. I like the fact that it explains all the bible verses from the lessons, gives historical overviews, and explains how one can apply the lesson to his/her own life.

I enjoy reading Daily Bread as well. I have a NIV Study Bible that details the reason the books were written and the background on the authors. It also contains interesting supplementary information next to many of the verses. I prefer reading that Bible over all others because I gain so much more meaning and understanding and I don't find myself getting bored.
My Bible also has multiple plans for how to read the Bible the most efficient and effective way. It has a 3 month plan, 6 month plan, and a 1 year plan. There's a plan for people who want an overview of the Bible and a plan for someone who wants to read every single word in the Bible. I think these plans are effective b/c they offer up a chronology that may be more effective and interesting than starting at Genesis and trudging through. HTH
