I did this in high school sometimes after my blow out got old. I didnt even know about flat irons yet at that time lol, but using the curling iron like a flat iron definitely smoothed it out. I wouldnt recommend it though, if youre using an old metal one. If its ceramic I guess its not too bad.

I've got relaxed hair and have been doing my touch-ups for years. My blow dryers is a dust collector. I air draw then use the curling iron to straighten my hair since it's nowhere near straight when it drys. Actually, it's like Buckingham's photo in Shahla sig above, when it drys but the texture is coarser. It's worked perfectly, smooth as silk from root to tip. I figure between the relaxer and the curling iron that's enough damage to do w/out blowing it out.

When I was relaxed I 'flat-ironed' with a jumbo curling iron.

I bought into the hype and purchased a flat-iron and my hair looked like crap within a couple of months of using it, so I went back to my jumbo curling iron.

I don't think a curling iron would cut it now that my hair is natural, but it was great for my relaxed hair.

That was my routine exactly. I would air-dry, apply my Aveda USC and use my curling iron to straighten. My hair always looked great!

I use to only use the curling iron until I got my maxiglide. In may I used my maxiglide and curlingiron at the same time and it turned out nice.

I used to do this in high school to get my roots straight. Years later, once I got a jumbo ceramic iron, I still would do it from time to time with decent results. I never brought the barrel all the way down the hair, but would just " iron" the roots and skip a flat iron.

Now if I flat-iron, ( which I rarely do anymore), I use a Sedu.

I think I'm gonna start doing this, because I have to run the curling iron to bump the ends after flat ironing because I can't do it well with the flat iron.

Did this for years.

I didnt see the point of blowdrying, flat ironing AND having to curl it so I used my jumbo sized curling iron/bumper to straighten and curl my hair..

The first pass was just to straighten it out and then the second pass used to bump my ends.

Then i'd wrap it and leave it alone. I still cant figure out how to bump my ends with a flat iron and even though i invested in one, i still go back to my bumper.

I should've just invested that money into a really good bumper instead of a flat iron. One that carried the same heat, ceramic plates, etc. and would eliminate having to use 3 appliances just to straighten and set my hair.

I have alot of culring irons. I prefered using them of shorter hair. I actually think they set the hair better than a flat iron. I may go back to that.

I agree....:yep:

^^That big jumbo curling iron in the pic is exactly what i have. Mine is gold also..think its made by "Solid Gold"..had it for years, heats up in 60 seconds and offered a good press AND curl. Only problem is that the longer I stretch, it just aint hot enough..

I need to sell my flat iron. Any recs for a jumbo curling iron that's just as hot as a flat iron?

I always cringed when I would see girls doing this growing up, I just KNEW they were frying their hair.

Most curling irons arent ceramic they're just metal which heats unevenly and has hot spots that can be damaging to hair.

So I wouldn't unless it was 100% ceramic.

IDK......Maybe you could us a smaller Goldn Hot curler to get the roots straight.

I know they get hot. I remember stretching (before I knew what it was) in college and heating it up a little to hot and when I clamped down on my hair that piece just burned off.

There's an FHI one for $115. Ateeya uses a 1.5" either the Jilbere or the Gold n Hot one, (both ceramic) on her Youtube videos. I checked out Sally's and their $29.99 each. Obviously not as good as the FHI but Jilbere gets good reviews for the price.

^^Trade-ins? Since when did Sally's start doing trade-ins? This is news to me! Cause I sure got some old appliances laying around.

What you said. Coz when I try to curl my ends with a flat iron it looks weird and choppy, then I have to use a curling iron anyway.

They've had it for a while now! And when I asked them, they said it doesn't even have to be a brand they carry. Just any plug in hair appliance and you get $5 off of a new one.

$%#!!!! I just called there and the promo ended. I'm TICKED!!!!

I voted yes although I no longer use direct heat, but way back when I was relaxed-and-blown-dry, this was my weekly M.O.

Oh my goodness this happened to me too...I still remember the sound of the hair breaking off and falling to the floor, like tiny silver bells :lachen:

T3 has a curling iron that goes past 400 degrees.

I used to do this in college before I ever owned a flat iron. After I got the flat iron I only did that when I was in a rush and didn't have time to flat iron, so the first pass was to straighten the second pass to straighten a little bit more and curl.

I used to all the time before hair boards. I didn't even know what a flat iron was. I think I did a lot of damage with that thing.
