I tried it. I think I can get away with it for 1 day, maybe 2 before I get tangles galore.

An option some kinkier types have success with is the braided roots wash and go. I did this for nearly a month, which was definitely too long because my roots started to mat, but I'm thinking about trying it again for just 2 weeks at a time. What you do is braid your hair in small braids all over, but just the first 1/2" or so. The braided sections help your hair to clump and cut down on tangles. 3 days of loose cowash and go and my hair was a terrible tangled mess. But after a few weeks of braided roots wash and go, my loose hair was not tangled at all! It was only my roots that got matted, but like I said, I'm going to try for a shorter period of time before redoing them. Here's a pic of my braided roots wash and go:

At the time I had about 7 or 8 inches of hair, I guess. It shrank a little more as time went on, but it didn't tangle and that's the important part. I just cowashed, or rinsed with water, squeezed some water out with a towel, put on some leave-in, shook my head up and down and side to side to make sure the braided sections clumped well, and that was it. I did this every day to every other day.

1.)wash and go? if yes, how exactly do u pull it off without tangling as in what products u use? Unfortunately, I haven't been able to pull it off for more than 2 days without getting massive tangling and knots. I stopped wearing them a year ago once I realized it was hampering my progress. I will be watching this thread for tips.

2.)If u co wash, what products do u use, how often and what leave in do u use? I used Pantene Hydrating curls for my cowash, then aveda elixir leave in and fantasia IC gel for styling.

I'm coming up on 4" in 9 days. ^_^

I wash/co-wash daily, use conditioner as a leave-in and sleep in a shower cap. I remove it and fluff my hair while it's still moist in the morning and let it airdry. I'm 4a/3c . I call it the Cap n' Go method, which is greater detailed in my fotki journals.

I've worn Wash and Go styles for the las 5 years from relaxed to texlaxed to natural and haven't had problems. That said, again, I wash/co-wash/and let me add DETANGLE daily. Sometimes I'll spray on shine spray to see if it makes my hair even shiner but I think it's causing me tangles...not sure.

No issues yet.

Interesting question! I have more hair than that, but I haven't tried. :look:
JK, i tried it but only for 1 day...scared of tangles:lachen:...but i hear a lot of naturals washing and going and i wanna try it too...i also tried cowashing twists....no extensions...my twists got messy looking:wallbash:

Thanks Mwedzi for ur response. ur 2nd pic looks just like my hair when i tried a wash n go...only difference is ur hair is thicker and i did not braid my roots...i have about 5-7inches of hair all over so i might have to try the braided roots approach....actually now that i think about it....some1 with our texture does this...i cannot for the life of me remember her name and she has a fotki too...off to go look and i will edit this post once i get the info....

yea...i didnt have any problems with less than 4 in hair but now that my hair is longer im not sure if i will be able to pull it off...dont want no setbacks in 2008...but ur cap n go method sounds wonderful...i need to start baggying again.:yep:

i wonder if i put my hair in medium boxbraids and rinse/cowash daily will that be better ? what do y'all think? Ok i ask a ll these questions bcos currently i wash/DC once a week on loose hair, clarify 2x/month...no problems as of yet....but will like to wet my scalp more frequently to see if i get more growth but i have 4B natural hair and im scared of tangles:grin: if all my nat 4ers say no..then i will stick with what im doing...(as in once a week DC/wash)

Yes, 4b'r over here. When I used to do shake and go's I would slather my hair with Suave Milk & Honey, comb, rinse 80% of the product out while shaking in between. Then I wouldn't take a comb to it after that.

To refresh the style, I think I would pat water into my hair and spray my leave-in, and use a gel to slick it back, which I hate doing. Or, I would shower without a shower cap so the steam and water can moisten the hair a bit.

I think my hair is too long to be doing that now. It would be more trouble than it's worth and my hair dries easily if I leave my hair out like that.

I think that's a good idea. Actually, I'm in box braids now and I plan to transition to a braidout and then a braided roots wash and go. Shoot, I'ma get my money's worth out of these parts I put in my hair. I think medium sized ones are even the best, because my only worry for my own hair is the ends. It's hard to braid to the very ends on smaller braids and even harder to unbraid them for me, so I just twisted the last 1/2" or so. And I know my twists want to lock up after a few washes. So I'm keeping an eye on the ends and yesterday I did a test run trying to take a couple down with a detangling spray and it seems to be okay. But I'm only washing 2x a week. Anyway, overall I think this is your best bet for frequent washing. I think it was NappyRina who rinsed nearly every day for a month with box braids in and she's 4b.

Oh, you probably did hear about the braided roots wash and go on another Fotki. I heard about it on NP from watercolorz, and several folks have tried it.

I 'rinse' my scalp at least twice a week - it keep my hair feeling 'fresh', esp. when I'm doing two strand twists for two weeks. One way to keep them a little less fuzzy is to put them 'up' in a flat twist, and then just stick your head under the shower. Ahhhhh. Feels so good. Then, let them partially dry in the flat twists, and take them down to finish drying....
