Re: Any freshy college or soon to be college stude

I never had much of a regimen either until I came to college. It helped me develop one. My freshman year, I wore my hair in braids most of the time and the only time anyone saw my real hair was when I was giving my hair a break. I found this board the second semester of my freshman year, so my hair has been doing nothing but growing since then.

Wow, So many college students. I'm a Biomed. Eng. student (premed, thank you). My freshman year was tough indeed. My mom always did my hair so I did not know what to do about it. I cut it, curled it, flat iron it, wore it in ponytails, and worst of all I kept running my hand through it. Now I am getting my hair back on track thanks to finding LHCF. I am sure my roommate is going to be real surprise about my hair in the fall.

Re: Any freshy college or soon to be college stude

hmmm..i need to get a college kit together something thats cheap, and effective..but i have a while to go before i get there..yes, i believe i'm the youngin of the board.

actually i graduate from college in aug but it was in school where i started to transition my hair. at 1st my hair was breaking off from lack of knowledge about hair (which has plagued me all my life) and harsh perms so i gave it up.

basically i did braids and wigs most of the time because i was super busy. the downside to the wigs was that it was too hot on my head since my hair is thick and my hair was always sweaty

so basically i went to wearing buns, finding a conditioner that worked for my hair, remembering to take my vitamins and not ODing with the heat.

and yes my hair did grown nicely but i caught alot of backlash from people because of the way i was wearing my hair. people seemed to assume that i was taking pride in myself because i didn't have my hair "done"--a ponytail or bun wasn't good enough.

they didn't and still don't seem to understand that A) when you don't have a perm that you just can't wear your hair "out"

secondly i have a really wide face so i have to wear my hair away from my face.

lastly and most importantly my grades are more important than getting my hair done. all that time in a salon needed to be spent with my head in the books

I will be a junior in August (I am so excited about starting school! This 9-5 job is killing me!

J/K I love my internship!).

I transitioned in December of my senior year in high school and did the big chop in December of my freshman year in college. I started with about 2-3 inches of hair. Now my hair is about 8-10 inches all over so I'm doing well.

I started off doing CWs every morning in the shower but then I learned to twist and now I don't wear my afro very much.

I started wearing twists 99% of the time in January. I will continue doing this until my hair is bra-strap when stretched all around, not just in the back. (Hoping to be there by December 2006).

My schedule is I only have classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I did not plan it that way and I know that I will hate those days! But I will have time to take care of my hair.

I cannot wait until I reach my goal! I will look so cute when I wear my huge afro and my shoulder length twists and twistouts! Hopefully one of those styles will be rocked for my graduation!

I was a freshmen this year and the hard water in the dorms KILLED

my hair! When I came to school, my hair was shoulder length, now, the back part is about the end of my neck and my side

i just can't even talk about them...I'm defintely thinking of getting a screw on filter for the shower in my dorms.

I know this might be a little backwards, but my hair actually grew a little bit my freshman yr, and I know for a fact that the water is terribly hard and just has all kinds of bad stuff in it. I think it was due to the fact that I only had time to pull it back in a ponytail, and I was in marching band so I couldn't really have a hairstyle anyway. And then getting my hair done professionally always worked out because every time it came around to getting a touchup I was at home. So thus far I have not gone to a hairstylist in DC because I'm a little iffy, but I'm thinking about doing the dominican thing.

But, my best advice to any freshman student: if possible, try to get the products your hairstylist at home uses (if you are going to be away from home.) I purchased some Design Essentials in super large bottles that lasted a year and a half. This was before they started selling their products on their website. Also, I roller set and air dry overnight a lot to avoid using heat on my hair, so if you know how to roller set that might be best for you, maybe...Also remember to use satin scarves, don't be temped to use bandannas or anything else that seems convinient!

Sorry so long!

wow that's a little scary... this hard water talk

gosh now i really have to step my hair growing game up  grow most of the length I went by then end of August, lol.

i need to learn how to rollerset before i do. I have a great regimen so that won't change. I just need to go back to my Nexxus and buy big bottles when I'm leaving.

Oh wait, i'm going to need a winter hair care regimen. i've never been in anything lower than 50 degrees and chances are i'm going to Boston for school

Re: Any freshy college or soon to be college stude

Great thread! LoL I'm a senior in college too! My hair has went thorugh some things...since I was a freshy...ie hard water, lack of moisturization, and improper styling did my hair in. I was just too busy and there was too much to do (@ least 15 units a semester) it was tough....I have the hang of it now since I found lhcf in Nov of 2004. My hair is getting thicker and CO washes have definantly helped especially if you work out often.

I'm a junior in college now...

When I first entered college my hair was almost mid-back. Then with a combo of hard water, and not really taking care of my hair (including meeting my boyfriend and sleeping without a scarf so that I could look cute for him lol), my hair broke so that it was about 3 inches above bra strap.

After that, I made a promise to myself that I would grow my hair back, and so far I did. I just made sure I deep conditioned, and took care of my hair again. Now, I'm in the process of transitioning so I'm taking extra good care of my hair. But, if you just put your mind to it and dont neglect your hair, you'll be fine.

I am a freshman in college and i knew about this forum a year before i went away. My room mate and family think I'm crazy for bringing all my products with me (i'm a PJ) but honestly i think i would be back at square one if i didn't.

Anyways, now that I'm in college I find myself straightening my hair more than I used to. My senior year of highschool I always did braidouts and micros. But since I pay attention to my hair's moisture, I don't put any stress on it (ie: curling iron, tight pony tails) and don't brush it everyday I am still seeing a lot of length and body when I go home to see my stylist for a touch up... And I don't go home for months because My school is 4 hours away.

I think braids are perfect for college as long as you don't leave them in for too long and you know hair to care for your hair in braids. I stopped getting braids because it's EXTREMELY expensive now that my hair is a longer.

I don't think maintaining healthy hair in college is hard at all. What I do is DC once a week, avoid brushing and combing it every day, make sure my ends are always moisturized...and that's basically it! Just try not to be overprotective about your hair while at school because you won't have as much fun. Ie: Sometimes I find myself sleeping in my friends' room without a silk scarf or silk pillow. There will be times when I can't care for my hair because college life is so spontaneous... but i make sure that doesn't happen often.

Wow this is a great thread!!! Brillant idea to whoever started it 2 years ago.. Well Im a senior in college and my hair has done ok. Being in a different state and not knowing much about great hair care, i just keep my hair braided for most of my years out here. I made a promise to myselve that i would let a year go by without any braids and im doing great so far. May would be a year. I also found dominicans out here and Ive been doing great so far :) .

I'm a senior in college right now and living in an apartment. But I lived in the dorms for the first 3 years and that water was HORRIBLE! It left everyone's hair so hard and lifeless. I didn't take very good care of my hair back then, I'm natural now to hair care is a piece of cake but back then it was difficult caring for relaxed hair. None of the stylists nearby knew what they were doing and always relaxed me bone straight and I was too afraid AND embarrassed to do it at my dorm in front of my white roommate. We had community baths and she totally thought I was an alien when I tried to explain the concept of deep conditioning to her!

I'm a sophomore and my regimen is simple. Cowash, bun. After I big chop, I will attempt more hair "styles".

I'm a junior in college (I've been missing for awhile because I'm preparing to take the MCAT and I have no time for anything but that's another thread) When I first came to school, my hair was almost bra-strap. Now, because of a cycle of breakage, shedding, and cuts disguised as trims, I'm just past shoulder length, but my hair is healther than it was when I was in HS, despite the hard water and the lack of time spent on my hair. Now I just wash with NTM, spray with distlled water, and rollerset or bun it.

I am a freshman in college and I have learned that it is a lot harder to take care of my hair here. I'm in Pittsburgh (Carnegie Mellon) and I still haven't found a decent, affordable salon. In one way, it has taught me a lot about doing things for my hair myself, like last night when I applied my own relaxer (even though it was underprocessed, I was still proud I was able to do it by myself!). At the beginning of the school year, I had some bad breakage but thanks to this board, my hair is bouncing back and I am just shy of armpit legnth.

this is my freshman year and i think i'm going to be doing braids again because i have no idea how the hell to do my hair, i just cut about an inch off all around because I needed it. i wanted to stay out of braids but i have no choice until it grows out. i give up.

I am a college freshmen now at an all science university. It has been rough so far and even though i found this forum while at this school i am still messing up my hair. Last week i washed my hair almost everyday and my hair got soooo ridiculously hard-it felt worse than a brillo pad! I broke my no heat challenges early at the end of last year, and a suffered under the hands of a scissor happy stylist. But I've learned and I still have 4 more years to grow my hair to the midback length that I want it to get to for my wedding! lol

I'm in my second year! I definitely went through the whole first year hair mishaps stage. The problems was that I went into University with damaged hair (from braids) that looked healthy. Anyway the hard water, overprocessing and my addiction to heat killed my hair, and I had to cut it to ear lenth in January.

I grew it out with braids after finding sites that taught me how to care for them. I also stopped frying it up with heat. By the time I came back in the fall my hair was healthy and shoulder length. I have since decided to transition (I started frequenting this board around that time, Oct. '05) and my hair is coming along really well... I'm just about at my goal of APL.. but I'm cutting it all off in July! I want to be 100% natural in my 3rd year, and since I'm transferring it'll be a brand new start.

What a great thread!

Kisses, I am transferring to, and I want to BC and have a fresh start, but I'm not sure that I'll be ready for all that change (esp. my hair!!!)

I am a junior in college, and I must admit, freshman year, I probably did the most damage to my hair out of my 21 years of living. I got perm after perm, when it wasn't even needed. Didn't moisturize enough, and curled my hair every day to be cute. Not to mention, the hard yucky water. Ugh! I try not to relive those memories.

Anyway.

Here I am now, two years later and transitioning. I highly recommend that for students in their first year of college, get braids or some sort of protective style, unless you got your hair regimine down pat. I know back then, I ain't have time for my hair and when I did I didn't treat it right.

Right now, I'm wearing buns and rollersets as my main trans. style.

I'm a junior in college, when I first moved away I was living on campus in a surban neighborhood, no hair dressers at all. My house was about an hours drive. I decided to go home everyother weekend to get my hair washed and set by my Dominican stylist. It wasn't costly considering that it only cost $15 with a deep conditioner and I had a part-time job at Macy's. But that was then, I was living in New York. Now that I'm living in FL, I have to depend on myself and this board. Most stylists down here are only good for outrageous weaves and when you find ones who may know a lil bit about hair care they are waaaaay too pricey.

This August will be my second year in college and I really didn’t have the time to take proper care of my hair. I opted for the easy way out, braids. Although they have helped in retaining growth, I want to wear my hair down now and start taking care of it. Now that I’ve read numerous posts from the LHCF ladies I have now incorporated taking better care of my hair into my schedule. It’s been about a 2 months since I have started to take better care of my hair and believe me it’s worth it. Whenever you have time in between your schedule, like when you’re watching TV just think about your hair and remember that you could be using that time to do something productive with it! HTH…

Hair has taken the backseat as a college student, and I agree...I find that moisturizing while watching TV has been helpful and killin two birds with one stone...

Re: Any freshy college or soon to be college stude

Now that I'm transitioning and depending on stylist less, my hair has been much easier to care for. I'm in my sophomore year.

I'm a senior in college and braids worked well for me for a while. Now that I'm natural I find it extremely easy to maintain my hair and its health. I love it because if it doesn't look the way I want it to in the morning (with a twist out or something) then I just soak it and sport a wash n' go. can't go wrong!

i leave for college late August.

right now my regimen is strong. I FINALLY found EVERYTHING that my hair loves and i'm happy. However, even though i haven't made my final college decision yet, i'm pretty sure that I will be heading to Boston, a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT climate then here in Miami  so yeah i'm worried about my hair. I'm trying to get it super-duper healthy NOW so that when I go up there, I just have to maintain the health of it so that I don't have to worry about GETTING it healthy.

I"m going to need help creating a winter hair care regimen. I don't know if the one I have now will be good enough. When i think of it, i think that the regimen will be fine, except that I might have to incorporate more moisturizing times in there or something.
