Any Advice for the PinCurl Challenged???

The Bun Master
I've seen some beautiful pincurls/bantu knot sets knocking around this site. Of course Southerngirl, BublnBrn and now MonaLisa come to mind. But I'm challenged :ohwell: . So I follow SG's basic tips. My first set was whack b/c I had too much curl b/c I did it on wet hair . The second set lasted for all of a day (done on damp hair) . The third set was done as actually directed, misting hair etc. and it was better, but I my curls were going in different directions and just didn't look HOT like y'alls. So what's the deal? I want those loose uniform waves you all get. Tell me how. And sometimes my ends have no bend at all :ohwell:.

Check out lonei's album. ;) She puts 4 big pincurls in her hair which give her a loose wave. Well, lonei and all those ladies you mentioned have really long hair. How long is your hair sengschick?

I did a pincurl set the other night and it came out so-so... I still prefer my foam roller set... :look: I guess I need to practice... I think it would come out better on hair that's been roller-set... my hair was kinda frizzy cuz it had been air-dried... the foam rollers seem to do a better job of "straightening" the hair after airdrying...

Hey Sengs

I'm glad you brought this up. It's been several months since I've done this style, and I need to check to make sure I've still "got it!"

There have been some really nice variations to the style on this site, with some great results (Kaddy and Dreemssold).

I've also come up with a lazy way to do them, and that's simply making far less knots than in my pix. I sometimes will make 3 or 4 and still get nice results. What I'll do is wait until my hair is 100% dry, then add a bit of oil to my hair, then make 3 knots- one on each side, then one in the back.

The curls don't last that long though, maybe 2 days max if you don't redo them each nite. I'll try doing them again and see if I can offer any other tips.

Thanks SG.

HOWEVER, I have yet to master the pincurl set like you do and I don't even want to think about what my hair looked liek when I attempted the bantu knot set.

I'd love to master this technique as well. I've had 1 or 2 attempts that left a lot to be desired :look:

OT: Sengs, why when I saw the thread title I thought you were trying to start a "Pin Curl Challenge"? :lachen: I was like, "now this challenge thing has gone way too far. :lachen: :lachen:

I can do a braid out with the best of them but I cannot for the life of me do a bantu/pincurl set that looks like anything. The first time I tried I got these tight curls going in different directions. The second time I tried I got looser curls going in different directions.

I love the look but can't seem to get it right. I think I twist too tight.

 @ ArmyQT & the Pin Curl Challenge :lachen:

@Poohbear: I have enough hair, the waves just don't come out uniform.

@Lindy: Do you get spirally curls from your sponge rollers? Or more of a wave? My hair didn't come out fuzzy when done on wet hair, but I had way too much curl. :nono: It was NOT cute and didn't loosen much at ALL.

@SG:  Thanks for chiming in! I'll check Kaddy and Dreems albums. Actually I have seen Kaddy's and I was even more confused! How do you get the curls to last for 2 days when your only making 3-4 knots? Maybe my hair just isn't that big on holding curl (I do remember that even w/heat styling, curls never stayed). I think on my one somewhat successful try the amount of knots I did was correct, but it just didn't hang nicely. One side was going one way, one side the other. And really it was just the front that wasn't uniform, so it looked crazy. Am I twisting the hair too much or am I making the little spiral too tight when pinning?

@Kaddy:  See that's how I'm feeling about these pincurl sets. Same thing, it either too much or not enough.

See that's me! Same exact issue. How do you secure yours?

Yes, the sponge rollers give spirally curls, if you use enough of them... I suppose that you could get just a slight wave if you roll it dry w/o any kind of lotion...

My hair doesn't hold curls that well either.... if I try to make 'em last for a second day, the curls end up looking fuzzy instead of defined... plus the fact that I exercise every other day, it just isn't possible most times to try to stretch my set out...:ohwell:

I use a U shaped bobby pin. I really think I was twisting then winding (sp?) too tight. When I look at SG's tips I see that she is not making her twists that tight.

Pin curls only work for me after I rollerset. I tried it both on air dryed and blow dried hair and it didn't work out.

Hey Sengschick,

I can get them to last if I put a little water and oil on them before twisting them up. I put a satin bonnet on when I sleep at night, and they're still pretty curly the next day.

If I want it to last more than that, I have to re-twist them and add a little more oil/water.

HTA!!!

LOL...Bunmaster....I know you have officially jinxed me now from ever achieving that look again...Bunmaster can do style upon style...I stumble on ONE...and now I'm jinxed.

I wasn't even trying...I just rubbed a lil mango butter on my hands twisted and slapped some bobby pins on my head. I swear on my cat...that's all I did.

Maybe that's the secret...just don't try...just slap the pins on your head.:ohwell:

As Poohbear mentioned, Lonei creates 4 giant pincurls after rollersetting for a loose wave. She also wears smaller pincurls as a protective style until she washes again. I wonder how she's doing.
