Haiilllll nawww. Girl my hair is healthy as a horse now. I would be a fool to put relaxer back in it. When I want a straight look I press and am currently working on perfecting my method. But taking my relaxer out was the best decision I've made in my 40+ years yet.

This is just me personally. I have seen some women whose hair is just beautiful with relaxer in it but it just isn't the best for mine.

I actually admire the relaxed/texturized heads that can have healthy long hair with chems. I flat iron for the straight look and people dont even suspect I'm natural some even ask is my hair naturally straight or is it a relaxer, go figure:cool:
I'm a 3b crown and front/3c4a majority

Yep, this is me too.

After I bc'd and was natural for just six months my hair was so healthy and thick. The first relaxer took beautifully because MY NATURAL hair was the bomb, it had nothing to do with the relaxer. Over time the relaxer took all the health away. That's me though, some people's scalps and hair can handle the chems I guess. My hair has always been the thickest, healthiest and strongest when natural. That's why I cut it off and am starting over again:mad:. Live and learn I guess.:perplexed

So most peoples' experience is that a relaxer caused detrimental effects to their hair that was out of their control? what about if you was to do buns, little heat, CWs and protectve styling? Wouldn't it still be down to the issue of haircare? or styling whether natural or relaxed?

The issue of haircare was not the issue for me. My hair was fine when it was relaxed. I just wanted to go natural and stop getting relaxers. I felt that it would be healthier for my hair. Plus, I wanted to embrace my God-given hair texture.

People return to their natural hair state for different reasons besides the detrimental effects of relaxers on hair. ;)

When I was relaxed, I took the best care of my hair. Uber moisture, protein, protective styling. Everything and my hair would still not grow. Now, my natural hair grows with minimal upkeep and like someone else said, it would be stupid of me to relax it again. If I want straight hair, ill use a flatiron

For some it may simply come down to haircare, but for some of us, the relaxer is detrimental, period. The chemicals are too harsh (lye or no-lye) and our scalps (regardless of heavy basing) and our hair cannot handle the drying and adverse affects of the relaxer. Like telling someone who is allergic to strawberries to take Benadryl first and drink a lot of water to control the affects when the best thing to do is avoid strawberries in the first place. And like Poohbear said, many of us just want to embrace, enjoy and explore our God-given texture. For me it's both.

Don't worry Hopeful, you are not alone. I did the big chop with just a 1/2 inch of hair and went natural in January of last year. Had MAJOR FUN in my naptural journal and then relaxed my hair in December. It's now just barely shoulder length. Now here it is March. I'm back in braids and can't wait to cut the permed ends off back down to my 1/2 inch. I don't know why I even went back in the first place......

Thanks. You have no idea how much better you made me feel. I'm sorry we suffered similiar fates but I really do appreciate you sharing. This time we gotta stick it out.

OT but pooh bear i really like natural hair on you.

You hit it on the head! At least for me, I couldn't never understand why my hair looked so good the first times (I was natural until 16/17, did a Bic chop -- yeah Bic -- at 20 or so, then relaxed again at 23) and then basically blah every touch up afterwards... I'm transitioning... My hair doesn't like chemicals either...

I don't plan on it. I love being napputural. Occasionally I may flat iron my hair. I went through too much to just go back to perming again. I look better to me with natural hair. I don't look like evey other black girl in America with me sporting my naps.

I did that...

I've been natural a few times now. I usually didn't have an agenda but once I was growing out an awful color. It was so bad nothing I did made it better so I stopped doing everything. I didn't relax again until my hair was below SL with all the color cut off. I like long hair. Short hair does not suit me. Natural hair is just too hard to grow long. My natural hair had to grow 3 inches before I could see 1! It was like watching grass grow in the winter. But I don't think my natural hair was any healthier. I had crazy split ends, probably from the friction of combing and detangling it (I rarely used heat).

LOL! Yes we do. I'm getting ready to stock up on some Fantasia IC w/Sparkalites now so I'll be all set when I BC on my birthday in May. In fact, I'm going to the store this weekend and start stocking up various VO5 conditioners and CON clarifying poo. I already know what my natural hair likes and doesn't like. So there's no room for error (or reason to be broke trying to figure stuff out) on my part this time. I'm so excited. I just can't wait!!!

Nope. Yeah, I'm saying never. I love my natural hair and being a natural is soooo liberating in that I never have to go to salons. Besides my hair doesn't do well with chemicals and so there's no way I'd risk throwing away all my progress out the window.

I'm in the minority here, but I think that if you are meticulous with your perm/touchup routine in addition to doing some of the things you mentioned (protective styles, etc), that permed hair can grow and flourish.

My problem is that I'm not that person who can perm new growth without hitting previously processed hair and I am done spending my saturdays and my money in a beauty shop or at somebody's house entertaining their children while they do my hair.

Natural hair is JC friendly because there are no touchups required! :) And as long as my Maxiglide soothes the occaisional straightening itch, I'm all good with the nappy hair.

I have gotten a perm after I became natural, and feel stupid for actually doingit. Because when i went to go get it done, they were like natural hair is coming back. And I was like. . OH? haha. But it was ecasue I couldn't handle it, and it was shorter than what it was before the first time I got it permed. But. . .I'm having a little better luck this time around. I just can't control this breaking. . okay that didn't sound good. But good luck with your desicion.

I'm still transitioning, but I can say with 100% certainty that this time IS IT! I'm Napptural for life after this! hahah

My relaxed hair was/is healthy, but I don't like the history of relaxing, as well as the detrimental effects on my hair/health that the chemicals cause. I also just like the fact that I am embracing my hair the way God made it.

Never! I have no urge to relax. If I ever want a straight do, I'll break out the flat iron, but to have straight hair again permanently, 24/7 scares the heck out of me!!!

I've actually had "nightmares" about it! LOL!

I didn't give my natural hair a chance when I first BCD. I allowed haters and internal pressure toway me back to a relaxer last year. That was a big mistake! I missed my curls and I lost my ability to wash n go. For me, my hair will be natural for life. I am not knocking relaxers, since I've used them for 20+ yrs, but it got old for me. I was tired of touching up my relaxers, tired of having to put curls in my hair to give it body, tired of my dependency on these chemicals to tame my hair. Now I have curls without a rollerset, a quick option to style my hair....wet it and forget it. My natural hair is easier for me. The challenge now is to learn other natural styles . i wish I hadn't relaxed my hair earlier. It would probably be near shoulder length by now.

So, out of 54 people only...what?... 10 are actually 4a/4b naturals planning to get a relaxer. :lachen::ohwell:

nope

what made me go natural was just general curiosty and my desire to not having sores on my scalp. relaxers didnt cause my hair to look bad (of course they damage the hair though) and since my hair is naturally fine and thin, they made my hair look thinner than it really was.

i LOVE my nappy hair. i wouldnt mind going straight from time to time, but ill have to muster up strength to apply a flat iron to it. that may take a few years (took me about 9 months to finally do a blow out)

Make me #56. If I dont think my hair would thrive whild relaxed. At the longest, I might reach shoulder length. Breakage is a .....

Another 4a/4b who BC in December 2005 and plan to remain natural. Maybe an occasional Maxiglide if I feel the need, havent tried yet. But loving the natural thickness of hair right now and all the other freedoms that come with being natural. Working on improving my styling option though.
