I've always seen Oyin all over hair boards, bit I discovered Oyin Handmade's Shine & Define locally at a natural product boutique. It was a complete spur of the moment purchase as I was originally looking for Karen's Body Beautiful's Creamylicious.
Price: $12 (4 oz)

Where to Buy:
Oyin Handmade, Sage Naturalceuticals

Product Claims:
Tired of styling products that provide hold but strip moisture with drying alcohols? That promise shine but deliver crispety, crunchety, bulletproof hair? That control frizz but rob you of softness? Oyin Shine & Define is a new philosophy in styling products. Formulated from vegetable sources renowned for their moisturizing & shine-increasing properties, Shine & Define Styling Serum imparts softness, light hold, great shine, and gentle definition.

Top 3 Ingredients: purified water, organic flax seeds, organic aloe vera gel

The first thing that caught my attention with Oyin Handmade's Shine & Define was the fragrance. I can't pinpoint which fruit it actually smells like, but I will classify the scent as 'a bag of skittles' lol. It smells grrreeeaaat! I haven't tried any other Oyin product, but if any of the others smell like this....oh K-Ci, Mary, & Jojo! It's on like popcorn!

I used the Shine & Define post deep conditioning with
Aussie 3 Minute Miracle
ir
(<--- great stuff btw!). I decided to Braid-n-Curl my hair since I had not done that style in months. Section by section, I added the styling cream to my damp hair. The consistency of Shine & Define is like a whipped yogurt. It is hard for me to describe, but each time I added the Shine & Define, it seemed to change the texture of my hair a little. It made my hair softer and more manageable. It was not sticky, thick, or too heavy in the least. I really loved the way my hair felt and how smooth it looked with just the application of the product on wet hair. The product itself applied so lightly that I was concerned about the holding ability.

I don't know why I was concerned because my hair turned out great! I air-dried overnight. As I unbraided, I could feel the moisture in each braid. It felt really silky and super soft. My hair was so soft I thought my curls would drop at some point during the day. (You guys know I make an effort to have my styles last at least 4-6 days using
THIS method of nightly preservation, so I was really happy to find my curls maintained their form.) Even with all of the moisturizing agents this product contains, my hair did not feel greasy, oily or weighted down. Actually, my hair has a light, airy swang and still does 4 days later. The pic below is 2nd day hair. Curls were still poppin', but unfortunately for me, the aroma of the product had worn off by the end of the that day.

The one qualm I have with this product is regarding a labeled specified use -- slick/smooth down the hair line. In no way, shape, or form is this product heavy enough to execute significantly slicked edges even if you tied it down. It is too light. Remember, the consistency is like that of whipped yogurt.

With that said, Oyin's Shine & Define is still a winner! Although it is more expensive, this can actually be a natural, more healthy alternative for the
LottaBody
ir
setting lotion I usually use when I execute my signature style.

Have you tried any of Oyin's products? What would you recommend?

What you said about it not being able to slick down edges is not true. It slicks mine perfectly. I think it may work for CurlyNikki but I am not sure.

i love shine and define with the dew for my braid outs. its the only time i know exactly what my braid outs will look like lol.

I haven't used this product yet. But, I have tried the Hair Dew (which I adore) and Whipped Pudding (which I also adore). I just received the Burnt Sugar Pomade today in the mail. So, I'll try it soon. Maybe the curiosity to try Shine and Define will grow.

Your hair looks so shiny! Would you attribute that to the Shine and Define or is your hair usually shiny? This was the first product I used and liked hands down for twist outs, I used it on wet hair then added the Whipped Pudding, then I ran out somehow before running out of the Whipped Pudding (I was using a sample size-surprisingly it lasted over 2 months) and my hair looked about the same with just the Whipped Pudding so I never restocked. What I have noticed is that my hair isn't as shiny without using an oil after twisting (I use Argan Oil from Sally Beauty Supply).

Now I'm wondering if I should order more of the Shine and Define for the shine factor.

HERE is what my hair looks like in pics with products I normally use. The shine looks pretty similar.

I want to try the whipped pudding. I think I am going to start with the honey dew. I'm so glad I found a local spot that sells it. I just checked out Oyins shipping -__-

@tatiana
What's your hair type? Thick or thin? Wet or dry?

westNDNbeauty

I have never been typed by the forum but I think I have thin 3c hair.
I have used it wet and dry. I like it because if I use to slick my hair back on day one, I can wear my hair in a different style on day 2 and 3 without build up or hard hair.

As a whole, products that people love on this forum my hair hates or thinks it ok. Products that people dislike or thinks it is ok, my hair loves.

Your hair is so shiny! I have just enough Shine and Define left to try on at least half of my twists when I do my hair today, I think I'll try it with the Whipped Pudding to see if I notice a difference on the twists I don't use the Shine and Define on. The only thing that I wish was I could use the Whipped Pudding for larger twists, I had to redo my twists the next day after making larger twists because it didn't leave my hair smooth or defined at all, my hair was left frizzy and almost like I didn't use product at all when I did about 10 large twists throughout (my hair is APL). When I retwisted I did about 20 smaller twists and my hair turned out smooth and defined.

Generally, 3c hair is can be slicked. I have 4a/4b and it requires a heavier product for slicking

westNDNbeauty have you used any other Oyin products since Shine and Define?
And I watched you maintaining a braid out video as well. Do you prefer KCKT or the Taliah Waajid?

Never got this mention JBunnie

I've used the shea butter/cocoa butter product -- it's hit or miss for me with that. Currently I don't use KCKT or Taliah Waajid -- neither of them moisturize enough for me.
