Sooo I stopped blowdrying my hair because it broke my hair off too much. I started airdrying...and I got the same results....broken off hair. The only time I get good results is when I roller-set....but I HATE rollersetting...my arms always get pins and needles!!!! When I airdry I use lacio, and a tiny bit of serum and tie down w/ a satin scarf. In the morning I seal with oil. What can I do???

How do you get breakage?

One thing i know is you cant/shouldnt really deal with airdryed hair, you have to dry it in the style that you want & leave it alone.

I just rollerset my hair and I've started airdrying it too so I know what you mean.

I don't like rollersetting either, but it's just like exercising and taking your vitamins: for a relaxed 4b that's not trying to use a lot of heat it's just something you gotta do.

Maybe the breakage has less to do with the styling method and more to do with the actual health of the hair or the health of your body?

I've never thought people had problems w/ airdrying their hair until I found this board. It's my preferred method of drying my hair. After washing, I just apply BB Oil moisterizer then comb my hair to make it lay flat. Sometimes this involves using a SOFT boar bristle brush.. Then I tie my hair up w/ my scarf. The end result is soft, shiny, straight hair.

For years I could never airdry. It resulted in dry, crispy, broken hair. I discovered Elucence's moisture balance conditioner and my hair suddenly was able to air dry without problems.

Overall, air drying IME leaves my hair drier than anything else unless I use the Elucence. Also my hair dries with the crinkles typical to my hair type and that leads to breakage when it's combed. I believe this is in part the reason why many Dominican stylists encourage their clients to wear the hair straight. The rollersetting gets the hair straight and there's less chance of breakage at the weak points. All my DR friends rollerset because, especially if they have naturally kinky hair they get more breakage with air drying.

Perhaps try some of the short cut techniques many of the ladies here have come up with to do rollersets. There's a rubberband-esque version that involves only a few rollers, the ponytail technique with a roller on the end which can easily be dried underneath a hard top dryer.

I learned this the semi-hard way last Sunday when I tried to air dry my hair. Being someone who is pretty much addicted to blowouts, flat irons, and hard hat dryers, this was a challenge but I did it anyway. I figured instead of blow drying my hair AND flat ironing, I would just air dry and then flat iron on a low temp. I used NTM and it did a little bit of justice but I definitely noticed a bit of breakage when it came to trying to style the hair afterwards. I think if you're gonna air dry, your best bet is to rollerset.

If something isn't working don't continue doing it. Listen to your hair. If airdrying your hair w/o rollers leads to breakage I suggest you stick with the rollersetting. Use bigger rollers so your arms won't have to work so much. 100% airdrying did not work for me and i lost too much hair. I rollerset under a hooded dryer or airdry 70-80% then blowdry on low and bump my ends on a low setting. I have type 4a/b hair that has to be straight and crinkle free to avoid breakage.
I use to get rollersets in NY then they would blow it out with a round brush no irons. My hair didn't suffer any damage with this method and I rarely had breakage during the week. They told me my hair type when relaxed needed to be straight to avoid breakage.

Hey msjones (i sent you a pm)

try using less products, when airdrying

and also try to airdry in a loose pony tail so the roots are taut.

i think tying the hair down and a mixture of using the amoutn of product is causing you hair to break

when the hair is dry, undo the pony tail, and add a little more product.

i then suggest finger sepaerating the hair and doing three large twists, clipping them under, and then using a scarf over them.

this will straighten out the hair (give it a few days for the hair to settle)

AND may i add, never comb airdried hair until your next wash

its just not possible to comb air dried hair without getting breakage.

hope that helps

yep totally correct

wehn airdrying it limits your styling options slighty

you can only use your fingers to style

using a comb defeats the purpose of airdrying

i either keep my hair in a bun

or have it loose

These tips are very helpful! If only I could keep my hair from breaking while I rollerset, I'd be in good shape. My hair has done well when airdrying and then flat ironing my hair.

I tried Lacio when airdrying and it did not work for me.

Some good ones for me have been Giovanni Direct and the Pantene Combing creams if you can find them.

I prefer Qhemet's products for airdrying my hair. I use one Fermodyl 619 ampoule (very helpful for airdrying!) and then Qhemet's Olive Cream. I top that off with my serum - a must for my successful airdrying. Not all of them work for me though. Fantasia IC in the pink bottle (the serum - not the spray) has been great. I mix in a little CHI Silk Infusion with it, but I mostly use the Fantasia.

My texlaxed hair airdries soft and I can even comb it. I then proceed to flat-iron.
