Angry Stylists

Hi everyone! I read that a lot of you go 10-12 weeks before getting a touch-up. I have been doing the same thing lately, not by choice, but because I've been travelling around so much. And when I went in the other day, my stylist scolded me for waiting so long. Do your stylists do the same thing? He really chewed me out and it was weird. Anyway, I am just starting to grow my hair out and I would like to continue to wait at least 8 weeks before touch-ups. Should I tell him that I'm trying to grow out my hair?

The stylists want to get paid. The longer you go without getting a relaxer the longer they go without being able to charge you extra money. The same goes for a trim.

It's all about the green to them.

You are the one that cares about your hair.

Is the hair on his head or yours. He has no right to tell you what to do with your hair. I woud continue to extend your relaxer if that is what you want to do.

yeah my stylist was really sarcastic with me about it. Most stylists think we need a touchup every 6 weeks and for example, Ive gone in the shop at 4 or 5 weeks before and had her try to bully me into getting a touch up bc I had "so much" new growth. I told her about my shedding and she says thats the problem bc I needed a perm(at 5 weeks!!!)...I told her I was trying to grow it out and she said "well thats not going to help u"...well low and behold it got worse after she permed it. I feel like saying "No B^&^$ch, YOU are the problem"....lol.

My hair grew from my ears to my shoulders in a year and I only lightly relaxed my hair about 2 or 3 times. SO obviously it does help, or doesnt hurt in any case. Most stylists are just that, STYLIST and dont know or care about the health of your hair, they just want to get as much money from u as they can.

Seriously though, u just have to learn to be assertive and dont let them do anything(perm, trim, etc) without you telling them to. Im going to a new stylist soon and plan to start off assertive with her before she thinks she has the control, ya know?

More new growth = More time they have to spend on your hair. In my opinion, your hair, your money, your rules! It's as simple as that.

Well said! I don't think her anger was for your best interest. It's probably hurting her pockets one way or the other. It's not the worst crime ever comitted. Just do you sweetie.

some stylists go nuts if you go longer than the regular '6 to 8 week' touch-up. "i can't believe you waited so long to get a touch up! omg! booohooohoohoohooooo" you want to get paid? stop your blubbering and do hair.

Good point.
ITA with all the above. I think you should find another stylist.

Why are stylists so adamant about that 6 week mark? I mean who really has that much new growth that quickly?

Stylists ALWAYS TELL ME THAT, they complain because I only get relaxers 3 times a year and they say that its bad for my hair, yet that is absolutley untrue, because in one year and this has never happened to me before my hair has grown 6 inches and although that is normal, i usually can not retain all that growth, its good to go post relaxer for more than 6 weeks and I think that it is beneficial, STYLISTS JUST WANT MORE MONEY!!!

OMG! I wrote a post about this not to long. Although the stylist I went to is nice she sprung the six week mark on me at the last visit and it threw me. One because I normally went every 3 months and 2 because although at the 3 month mark she would say my hair is thick and I shouldnt wait so long she never actually put a time which was best to come in. And I am the best person for a stylist. When I walk in they probably see dollar signs because I dont speak up and have them doing whatever to my hair and complaining about it later. Its really discouraging because it is hard finding a good stylist and when you finally find one you tend to trust their judgement and sometimes this may be a bad thing. my wallet says no so my mouth has to follow but then I always wonder does she know better than I do about what is good and what is bad for my hair and should I listen to her? Its all so confusing. God bless you all.

azull11, is your hair healthy? Do you suffer from breakage or underprocessing by waiting so long? If your hair turns out ok even after waiting so long, then to heck with your stylist! It is amazing how so many stylists know so little about actual hair CARE and how so many of them use and believe in outdated techniques and practices. I say as long as your hair is healthy, keep doing what it is that keeps it that way.

Girl, don't let him bully you or talk down to you! You're paying him for his service, you can always go somewhere else.

I'm bumping this old thread because these are such great posts. This is full of great points. Anyone who is getting frequent touch ups or trims (especially if the stylist charges extra for trims, which I think most do) should read this.

I'm looking for a new stylist and I can really relate to this thread because it describes the stylist I am dumping after many years. Luckily for her and her wallet I was ignorant about hair care for years, but unfortunately for her I've been learning a lot.

She is adamant about trims and touch ups every 6 weeks and she has scolded me and bullied me when I have spoken up and told her what I want. I'm very patient - too patient :ohwell: - and I thought she would eventually stop getting upset about me speaking up. I'm not the passive, ignorant customer I was 2+ years ago.

I thought she cared about my hair but she cares about :dollar: :dollar: :dollar: :dollar: :dollar: :dollar: :dollar: .

Did he do that in front of other clients?

You should tell him "You are not paying him for his disrespect" and walk out. He is not your daddy. Why should you sit and let him talk to you like your 10 years old and then pay him $45+ for a job you could probably do yourself.

I think you need to find another stylist that is professional and receptive to your goals and desires for your hair.

The only reason he raised his voice at you is because he knew he could get away with it. As long as you let him disrespect you he will. Advocate for yourself. This is your hair not his, if he doesn't want to do what you want him to do then fire him.

something like this happened to a few weeks ago except the stylist didn't put me on blast. She just kept getting on my nerves asking when was I going to get a trim ON MY FIRST DAY. I'm like... I don't even know if you can do hair yet and you think imma let you trim mine? She told me that my hair was healthy so.... . She may not know but i'm not getting a perm for another 4 months, she's probably gonna be heated lol!. I said I was gonna stop going but she does my hair well, soooo.....I'll put up wit it until I can't Take it anymore.

I have a problem w/ scissor happy stylists who want me to come in all the time for a trim. I look at my ends all the time, and I'm like there's no splits, and she's like it'll make your hair curl better. What? It will get a tighter curl b/c it's shorter, and the longer the hair the more weight will pull the strand and make a looser curl. I was like I don't think you need to go crazy, and she was real nice about it evethough she probably was talking about me after I left. Oh well, she still did a great color.

That is the truth. NO ONE touches my hair but me now cause I cant trust anyone else. Wish I had a LHCF sis close by.

See, this is why I refuse to go to a stylist. I simply refuse. I know what's best for my hair. When I do it myself, it grows and is nice and healthy. But years ago when I went to a stylist and let her talk me into a harsh lye relaxer and a rinse, my hair came out in clumps. No amount of Aphogee or any treatment could stop the shedding and breakage, and I was forced to BC and went natural. I loved being natural and will eventually go back to that. But I will never allow a stylist to talk me into something that I know is not good for my hair.

Do what's best for you. Have goals that you trying to reach. Don't allow anyone to bully you out of your dreams.

When I resumed stretching my relaxers, I explained what I was going to my stylist and told her she would probably see me every six months or so for a relaxer. She hasn't scolded me or tried to talk me into more frequent relaxers, if she did we would part ways. I have endured enough scorn from other stylists in the past that I know not to put up with unnecessary ish.

This is actually a good idea. When you find a new stylist, let him/her know upfront what your goals are. I was actually thinking about visiting a Dominican stylist here in the D.C. area. Someone named Judith that many ladies recommended. I'm told that she is not combative and listens to the clients when they tell her what they want. They can even bring their own products, so I'm told. Finding a good stylist is the most difficult part. Telling them what you want is not.

I hate stylits.
When I went to the salon in September, the stylist trimmed my hair without my autorisation O_O
Then, she dare to say to me that my hair is not healthy, I that I'm probably doing nothing to help it ! WTF ???!!!
No problem.... she was just wearing an horrible weave and I know that her hair is so short and wack below.

My stylist is somewhat like this, somewhat not. She is always trying to get me to come to her every week or every other week and I can't afford it. If I keep my hair healthy, she doesn't trim it. She did scold me in the past for not going to her regularly but that was before LHCF and I wasn't taking care of my hair.

YES
thats why I stopped going to one. I started self relaxing in sept and welll I underprocessed big time lol so I have to go back to one to get a corrective. I wish I could do my own relaxers.

But yes so many times I would stretch over 8 weeks (usually I go in 8 weeks) and then go to the salon and shes like,"whens the last time you had your hair relaxed?." I could tell her 8-whatever and shes like,"Yeah you wait too long. I can barely comb through. When it gets like this..theres shedding."

Lawd what till they see my hair now.
