ANGRY RANT: Inappropriate Comments about my hair at Work !!

I know this was uncomfortable for you and I'm sorry it happened. I had a co-worker (YT male) comment on another co-worker's wig (Black Woman). She walked into the room and he leaned over to me and whispered, "I see she got a new wig. It looks nice." I was stunned. So I asked him, "How do you know it's a wig." He said she changes her hair 1-2 times a month. Sometimes, it's a wig and sometimes a weave. I was like . Then I said, "Why are checking for her hair like that." He didn't say anything just looked confused. I didn't know the woman personally as I was new to this particular division at the time.

I thought to myself, "Lawd, if he is so casually making these comments to me I can only imagine the rude comments he makes to her."

Another co-worker I had wore weave and she openly talked about it. She didn't seem offended by what others said or asked about it and made comments about the hair of other black women in the office. So the openness of some black women can make white folk feel comfy commenting on our hair.

I am sorry that you experienced that OP.

Such a shame that man has the problems he has to act in such a fashion.

What a jerk...

i can't believe it was a MALE that openly said that! has there been a serious gender switching in the past 10 years or so?

I remember amongst men, that the main topic of discussion was: Sports, Cars, Sex and Beer.

Now it's: "Is it a weave or a wig?" i think guys need to get back under the hoods of their cars, or in the gym, or find something else better to do. Instead of watching Oprah. (and chris block-head)..

Just remembered. I wear weaves as my protective style. And my very critical sisters tell me they look good so I am comfortable in them. I switch up this PS with braids.
And the last time I got my new weave, a coworker commented that my hair looked great and I said thanks. And then a balding yt guy cowroker said, oh yeah, she changes it every three weeks!! I calmly stared as his bald spot with the 5 sprouting hairs that are artisically arranged and gel-ed to give the illusion of volume and I said 'I do change it, because I can'!

Hahahah that should be in the retort thread:grin:

This shyt was going on WAY before Chris Rock but he definitely made it worse - the only difference was that then it was mostly women asking that crap.

OP, I am so sorry this happened to you. You handled it really well. I'm with BMP though, I totally want to embarrass their *** right back.

You handled it very well.

My situation was worse than yours--by an African American woman coworker who didn't believe me when I unpinned my bun so she could see it. She kept asking questions, hinting that it was just clipped on or was a weave.

Two months later, she decided to do an extensive weave check in front of an Asian coworker. She was shocked when my hair did not fall on the floor, and she didn't find any tracks. You should have seen the look on her face.

My hair stayed on her mind even months later, telling me that my cut was growing out, etc. I said: "Yes, it will be back to waist length in about six months." I can only imagine what she was thinking.

I would just say why don't you and I go take a walk to hr and see if they can address your concerns about my hair. :ohwell:

I am not even understanding why THEY are worried about our hair in the first place!!!! When was the last time THEY got their hair plugs checked (now that is a sight to behold seeing hair plugs lined up in a row)

Shucks THEY are just as quick as anyone else to have weave, put on a fake ponytail (and trust I can tell the difference between a blond ponytail and that bleached mess)

Let me chill...but OP, you were clearly harassed, embarrassed and made to feel uncomfortable in your work environment...that would have been a HR issue for me...

Feel free to "accidentally" trip him the next time you see him walking around the office...jk LOL

I would have checked him the minute he let that mess leave his lips though.

It has always astounded me how some people feel so open to comment of things that are clearly NOT their business...and then when/if you feel the need to put them in their place, you get called the "b.ad" name...
