so basically henna thickens the hair and alma just brings back the texture??? Can alma thicken up the hair strand by itself???

Amla adds more "body" to the hair. In other words it can add more fullness to your hair; I am not sure it makes the hair strand thicker.

Anyone else's experience? Hoping to get some more feedback. Henna Sooq are you out there? Can you tell us more about using Amla Powder?

Hello,
I don’t know if im too late to be of any assistance but I tried Amla over the w/e. It was wonderful. I mixed 200g of Amla Powder with coconut cream and about 2 tbsp of Jasmine Oil. I left to sit for about 90mins uncovered. I let it to air dry over night and sprayed in a leave in conditioner. I then put a shower cap and towel over my head for a few hours and WOW!! :D
My hair was THICK AND BLACK. It was awesome, very full and shiny.

Thumbs up for me.

I will update my Fotki tonight!!

Hello Love! No it's never too late! Thanks!
So let me get this straight. I am not sure I have your process clear.

You mixed the Amla with coconut cream and jasmine oil, no water?

It sat for 90 minutes before you applied it or did you let it sit on your hair for 90 minutes?

Did you rinse it out and let your hair airdry overnight after applying a leave-in?

After you airdryed did you then place a cap on your hair with a towel?

Sorry for the questions, but I want to make sure I understand exactly what you did! THANKS!

Hi again,
No water, technically. I’m sorry I was too lazy to do it yday but I will post the details on my fotki tonight, pics of products and all.

Basically, I used Coconut oil that had been compressed and added 450ml of water to make it creamy. But you can just use regular coconut milk or cream. I then mixed the Amla in with a whisk and some Jasmine oil for shine.

I put it on my hair immediately not that it matters with Amla. It’s not like henna that will have a colour release at least that’s what I think.

I let the Amla sit on my hair for 90mins but you can do longer. It was recommended on the pack that I do 45-50 mins. I rinsed it out and air dried in a big plait overnight after applying the leave in. [I always use a leave in after every wash] so spray in leave in, plait into one let air-dry.

Once the hair was dry I put in my hair moisture – Motions [trying to finish, im such a PJ], oiled my scalp with Vatika and combed through ONCE.

I placed a shower cap over my head and then my turbie towel [I didn’t heat up my towel, my natural head heat is enough]
I had a nap and after a few hours removed the towel and cap.

I have full, THICK hair.
HTH, but look at my Fotki tonight, ill do it tonight just for you.

Ok I need help. I once tried to make an amla paste with water and it was so thick and useless. My hair was so stiff, I had to stop and rinse. Maybe I used too much powder? How much should I use 1/2 cup, 1/4 cup?

I use 100g of powder. Just gradually add the water as you mix until it becomes a consistency you like. I try to keep it at a consistency of brownie mix!

You can use amla powder by making a paste out of it or a tea rinse. I normally do a tea rinse but I've tried the amla paste and it took forever to rinse out. But the results were great. My hair was noticablly stronger (after the paste) and darker.

To make a tea I use a 4 cup coffee maker and put the powder in the filter and once it's filtered through, I wait for it to cool down and pour it over my hair and scalp. This is a great conditioner. Be sure to use a good conditioner afterwards.
ok I should have guess you had the tea recipe! That shine is still beautiful BTW. Ok do you think I could add it to my conditioner?

yes, condition would prob make it easier to rinse out.

DLewis, would you mind detailing how you made your paste, how long you left it on, etc?

I sorry I don't measure anything

I take some amla powder and mix it with hot water and oil, until it's loose enough to work with. Apply it to the hair, put a plastic cap on, go about doing house work, and after about an hour, rinse and rinse and rinse. It's really hard to rinse out. Be sure to use a good mousturizing conditioner afterwards because I believe it's a little drying.

Apology in advance...long post

I used Amla Powder last night.

My scalp was itching like crazy and everything I tried did not work. After doing a search on LHCF for itchy scalp I saw that a lot of people recommended using neem and amla powder.

I went to the Indian grocery (123 Lexington bet. 28 & 29) and picked up some neem and amla powder. Also bought other Indian products (amla oil, vatica lite oil, brahmi oil, shikakai oil, shikakai powder, and keo karpin revitalize serum) my total for those eight products was $36.74.

I pour neem and amla powder in a plastic container and mixed in warm water until it became a loose paste. I parted my hair and apply the paste directly to my scalp and then on my hair. i left it on for 45 minutes.

I hoped in the shower and let the water run over my head for like 10 minutes, after the paste was completely out of my hair i added some Lafier Desrizol Rinse (pink one) and cover with plastic cap. Then i shower and wash the conditioner out.

Then i blow dry hair on low heat and oil scalp with a mixture of Vatica, Shikakai, and Keo Karpin then braided hair into two, cover with head scarp and when to bed.

Next day: Scalp is no longer itching, hair is thick, and the shedding has reduced tremendously. Will continue to do this once a week.

January Noir,

Do you just add water to your Amla powder? I bought some while in New York but I'm not sure what to do with it. I also bought some Shikakai powder and have no idea what to do with that either.

Wow this is a great thread! I never knew that you can do "amla treatments" like how you do henna and indigo treatments. Now I must stock up on my amla powder, since I see that it does darken, thicken, and add shine. I have to try this!

I do a pre-wash with amla oil or amla paste (powder mixed with water) once a week. Sometimes I add some maka or brahmi to the mix.

Amla comes from Indian gooseberry and has a lot of Vitamin C - part of why it is so good for your hair.

I always oil my hair and scalp before applying amla paste. It rinses out much more easily like this and my hair isn't dry or tangled at all.

I use 100g of Amla powder at a time and add 8 oz of liquid - a combo of aloe vera gel or aloe vera juice plus rosewater and molasses

after applying I either wrap in saran wrap and leave on overnight or I go under the steamer.

When it's time to rinse out, I use my VO5 and co wash.

My hair is very very lush and moisturized afterwards.

Great suggestion @ the bolded.
