Am I the only one that relaxes every 6 weeks?

I relaxed religously every 6 weeks for over 15 years, and my thick, coarse hair and scalp finally took a beating, expecially from the reg. lye relaxers. I was probably over processed, I'm sure now that I didn't have alot of new growth every time to relax. I've been natural two years now and my hair is still recovering. Good luck to you if you continue on this road. I honestly think stretching relaxers past two months is the way to retain healthy thick hair. HTH

I use to relax every 6 weeks, sometimes every 4 weeks. Hair never grew longer then what it was and broke off several times from overprocessing. I use to think I would never be able to make it past 6 weeks, but having my hair break off forced me to.

I used to years ago and the last to touchups I went only 9 weeks, so much new growth. But I can hang usually 10 to 12 weeks but my stylist hates it when I go 12 weeks, I understand though.

But if 6 weeks is working for you do try to fix what is not broke. But try 2 more weeks to 8 weeks and see if that can work for you.

Thanks for the responses ladies. Any idea how I can last two more weeks? What can I apply to my new growth? They are not manageable and my hair begins to break at 6 weeks.

I used to relax every 6 weeks.....BEFORE LHCF. Last Friday was the 8th week mark, and my shedding is so severe, I know I'll have to relax this week. I'll try to reach 10 weeks next time, and increase from there. I'm NOT one to sacrifice my progress just to reach a stretching goal, though.

What did you do to get those extra two weeks? I am just trying to go to 8. Anything more than that will not work since my hair grows too fast.

I also used to do it ever 4-6 weeks, combing the relaxer through the ends.
I know its seems hard but I'm definitely sure you can make it to 8 weeks. The pre-poos and deep conditioning helped soften my new growth dramatically.

I usually go every 6-8 weeks. I now wash nightly and I think that has increased my growth rate. Also, that keeps my new growth relatively manageable. If I go too long though, my hair (crown especially) will start popping :nono:

I use henna treatments, coconut milk/lime treatments, and caramel treatments (concentrating on the NG) to make sure my NG is happy. Also, when I DC, I use an applicator brush to apply the conditioner directly to the NG first, and DC with heat. I usually cowash at least 3 times a week. Except for the shedding, I haven't had any breakage issues...I just hate seeing my hairs leave my head en masse!!! :lachen:

I, too, may have to start relaxing every 4-6 weeks if I get that 1"/month from MN like everyone is reportedly getting. My NG won't allow me to function when it gets past 1"(eight weeks).
