My hair has never been thick and I don't think I've ever not had see-through ends (though, I haven't really been "hair-conscious" until a few years ago, so I'm not really sure) but the way my hair looks when I do it, and the way it looks when I go to a salon is markedly different.

It looks thicker and healthy when I fried it with my flat iron than when I went to the salon. The stylist said that I needed another 3 inches cut off because of damage. I just got finished cutting 2 1/4" off my hair and that would leave me with shoulder length hair like earlier this year.

The damage has been there for nearly two years. Is it necessary to cut off that much right now? It's localized and hasn't spread up the shaft like so many stylist say it will.

Also, I have to keep in mind that it looks like my ends are thin because the last 3-4 inches (nape area) are only 8 inches long while the hair above that is 20-1" long. Once the nape hair catches up, I'm sure it'll look more full.

If the damage has been there for so long and isn't causing any problems whatsoever, must I cut my hair for appearances sake or can I leave it and wait for it to get longer while doing gradual trims?

stylists just want you to second guess yourself and your abilities so that you will rely on them more. Don't listen to them. You know your hair better than any of them do. Do you have breakage? then don't trim.

Hi Boadicea my hair is the same way it appears to thin out as it grows long, I was looking at your album the other day, your hair looked very full and healthy to me, especially the back shot I think you had on a red blouse I was looking in your album minute ago and I didn't see it :(, did you take it out or am I thinking of someone else's album??:(

hey girlie,
my hair is the same way but the opposite! its longer at the bottom and shorter at the crown/middle area but Im sure my ends will look thicker when that part grows out.

I think your hair looks great and u can get away with gradual trims here and there to get the look you are going for. If I got rid of mine, Id have to cut it to my neck bc thats where the next layer is. part of me is tempted to do it bc I could wear cute rollersets and have a cute little fluffy layered bob...but It took me so long to get my hair to pass my shoulders. I just trimmed about 1.5 inches that I really miss bc before then I could almost reach up and grab it from behind, now I can only do it if I lean way back...lol.

Another persons album u could look at as inspiration was AJAmericanDiva's. Her hair is gorgeous and its bra strap and she went thru those stages too but rarely trimmed during her growout.

Like u said I think as the shorter hair grows out it looks fuller and fuller, and if u have a problem with the bottom looking thin, stick with rollersets in the meantime when u wear it out bc those disguise those ends and your hair looks nice and full/fluffy!

most of all, listen to your instinct over your stylists bc they ALWAYS want to cut somebody's hair!

Personally, I don't care about my ends being uneven or thin. As long as they are not split, I'm straight. I did a dusting about two weeks ago and I do the baggie method. Stylists are always trying to cut off length. Either their trying to be artistic, or they're just clueless.

Your hair is outrageously gorgeous, tell your stylist to quit hatin. You're doing something right.

I either meant to rearrange that picture or edit with an update but wound up deleting it by accident! I was too tired to put it back up right away but it's back up now.

I think I will try a rollerset (no blow-out) once a week with daily moisturizing. While my ends aren't split, they are frayed-looking so I'll keep up the gradual trimming. Another thing I've noticed is that my hair doesn't curl anymore when airdrying. It just poofs out.

Hey again :), is your hair texturized?, I remeber when you posted about the Profective relaxer, do you think that it was too harsh or got your hair too straight, have you changed products, is there a DRASTIC change in the curl definition when air drying, I think the next time I do a texturizer I'm going to use TCB (maybe in the summer) my first texturizer was in Oct.

You're completely lusional. And you can get passed this.
1. Don't listen to hair sylists.
2. I'm serious don't listen to them about anything having to do with hair health, cute styles yes.
They just want less length so they don't have to deal with it. Keep deep cond and moisterizing, hey try a baggie or bun but don't go loca with the scissors or let them do it either.

I have another 2 inches to go until my hair is a uniform thickness, but there is not way I'm cutting it all at one time. As a matter of fact, I'm not even going to trim until May--God willing. When I get to my goal of 20" (approx 17.5 now), I will dust regularly until the last 2" are gone. This way I will not notice a length difference. Maybe this would be a good idea for you too. As long as the damage is contained, why not trim slowly. Beauticians like to see immediate results before you leave the salon (hence the desire to cut), but you are the one who has to live with your hair afterwards. Good luck in your decision.
