Am I alone? My hair looks bad after wrapping?!

So this was supposed to be a happy post, but then I peeped my hair this morning and was slightly disappointed. The happy part is because since joining this board in Nov 2008 my hair has really done a 180 :) Everyone notices (my cousins, friends, and my mom is so happy for me after years of hearing/seeing me pout/cry over having short "non-growing" hair). I even got weaved checked twice in the last week (not because my hair is by any means super long, I'm grazing shoulder..but these are people that have known me for years and know that my hair has always looked "unfortunate" in the past). Now my hair is thicker, longer, and honestly I'm wearing it down more and I don't feel awkward, I actually think its cute! The one caveat is that it only looks cute after being freshly done. By that I mean washing, drying, using my new CARUSOS! (love them), wrapping and sometimes going back through with low heat on my sedu to smooth my hair looks great! Swingy, with body and movement, all that (mind you I still am fine haired, so these terms are relative..lol). Then I wrap and go to bed and it's all downhill :wallbash: My hair looks flat, no movement, and thinner after wrapping. What the heck!? My hair is healthier now! Why is this still my problem.

Well I've thought about a few things:
1) I do need to trim. I've been dusting until I reach goal (full thick collar bone or apl) and have not done a real intense trim in awhile.
2) Maybe my hair really does need henna. Not sure if it will make a big difference though? I've been considering it for sometime now, but I'm scared. I really got get these strands thicker though! :ohwell:

Does anyone else have this problem? Thicker swingy hair that is wiped out after one night if wrapping!!?? What has helped you guys?

I have fine hair and it's really flat and lifeless after wrapping. I started pincurling for more body and it looks 100% better.

Also you can add large rollers in the crown and then wrap the rest of your hair so it isn't so flat.

Happens to me too. It's the heat that gives swang, and once it's flattened overnight... that's a wrap. No pun intended.

Mine flattens about two days afterwards also. I just bought pins to try pincurling. I used to do it years ago. I hope I can still do it and make it come out cute

My wrap use to look lifeless after a few days. These are some things I've learned over the years to keep my wrap looking fresh and not flat.
1. I wrap up my hair with a shower comb to keep hair loose
2. I use large plastic clips at the top of my wrap to keep hair from falling down as I go. I only use 2 or 3.
3. Only use your brush to smooth fly aways and not to make the wrap flatter
4. I use one of those net Velcro wrap cap around the hairline only to keep the hair in place. Don't put this on tight which will lead to flat hair and dents.
5. I then put my satin bonnet on ( over my clips at my crown and my mesh wrap thats around the hairline).
6. I secure my bonnet with one black hair pin that I place between my bonnet and my hair. This makes sure it doesn't come off at night. Using a satin scarf to secure your wrap leads to dents and flat hair in my experience.
5. I the AM I unwrap using a shower comb and use a plastic clamp to hold down the hAir going in the opposite direction (it tends to not want to lay down). I leave the clip on for about 10 min and I'm all done.

Sorry so long and I hope this helps someone :)

You are not alone/I am here with you... No, seriously though even after a professional wrap my hair looks okay on one half and bad on the other. I gave up trying to wrap my hair at home. Since (I've heard) wrapping is supposed to be using your head as the roller, maybe it just means my head is shaped oddly?

Wrapping for me looks like the first few weeks after relaxing. After that - I see too much breakage and the one side of my hair NEVER lays flat. I have just about given up on the wrap, but I did see the half-wrap or partial-wrap (can't remember the name) on youtube and really like it better.

This happens to me too. And I actually have pretty thick hair, but after a flat iron and wrap it usually looks stuck to my head and just limp. I've tried Caruso and then wrapping, but to be honest the only thing that give me body is to rollerset first and then wrapping. And then pincurling it at night. But then again, I'm not that great at it and I usually wake up in the morning with one side flipped out and the other one with no bump to it. So basically I've stopped.

I always have folds in my hair after I wake up in the morning. Then I end up using a flat iron almost everyday when I wear it out. I cross wrap BTW

I had this problem too until I started using protein more regularly. It helps my fine hair have more strength, body and weight. I DC 2x weekly with Mizani Fulfyl which is a protein/moisture balanced conditioner. I use Aphogee 2 minute before and after relaxer. I also don't wrap my hair so tight. I also moisturize and seal twice a day.

Thanx for the responses ladies! Sorry for my late reply, but I got sick and forgot about this thread. Anyway, simplyconfident that technique sounds really good! I will give that a try. Good to see I'm not alone, and even thick haired ladies can get flat wraps! Let's keep this thread going!

The roller idea sounds like it would work. What type of rollers? Most clips on rollers leave a line in the hair.

I have problems with my hair when I wrap as well and I have pretty thick hair, but I think its because my hair is all one length. I have found two things that can help.

1. Roll your hair before you go to sleep. In the morning, wrap your hair before you take a shower and unwrap before you leave the house. This way you will loosen the curl from the rollers and your hair will still have body and bounce.

2. I did this all of last week and the results were amazing. I did a "cross wrap." I can't really explain it, but here are two youtube videos. My hair had like a full body wave in the morning and looked FAB. I tried both techniques.

Kami, what type of rollers do you use at night? I've had horrible results with foam style rollers with lines in the hair and excessive curls.

I use those orange "cold wave rod" rollers, flexi rods or I'll pin curl. But don't put too many rollers in your hair, like five or six so you'll have bigger curls in the morning.

We sound like regi twins! I'm all about those Carusos to bump my ends or do a quickie style, and the Sedu on the lowest setting to smooth after hang (air) drying my hair!

As for your issue, I've noticed this problem too..and it's worse after a fresh relaxer because my roots are flat against my head too! A porosity treatment or a rinse would help lay your cuticles down and give you a nice dose of SWANG! Plus, if you've never tried a rinse, it feels like you have a new head of hair if you use one that's also a cellophane (like Colorshines).

Are you oiling your wraps? or using a heavy moisturizer? That might be flattening and weighing down your hair.

Products/the condition of your hair are the only two things i can think off that would make your wraps lifeless...

Good luck!

That used to happen to me too Leigh! I used to get breakage right by the temple area when I wrapped my hair but then I started doing 3 things that greatly diminished the amount of breakage I had.

First, I started putting warm coconut oil in the area that was breaking off. I did this to repair it and to make a hair stronger in that area.

Second, I started wrapping my hair in the opposite direction. Continuing to wrap it in one direction usually puts tension on a certain area-which in my case was my temple area. This helped a lot in terms of stopping the breakage as well as giving my hair more volume.

Third, if I had a lot of new growth I'd move on to cross wrapping my hair instead of a normal wrap. I noticed that wrapping your hair at a time when you have a certain amount of new growth usually makes it pop at the demarcation line. After that it's best to just do a cross wrap (is that what you meant?) and leave the front of your hair in the exact style way you want to wear it the next day and then tie it down with a silk scarf.

(This is my favorite video on cross wrapping http://www.youtube.com/user/JustThisGirl1#p/search/0/wMHDfpv8gzA )

This made a big difference later on. I sure wished that I knew this sooner!

When I get my hair done, I always get a rollerset. To maintain the body and bounce, I use a wide tooth comb only! No brushes or fine tooth combs. As far as moisturizing, make sure you are using a light moisturizer as not to weigh the hair down.

I have fine hair and mine almost always looks flat after wrapping. I prefer to set on satin rollers at night, then when I get up I wrap hair around and smooth a dime size amount of serum or moisturizer on the wrapped hair, jump in the shower & get ready. When its time to do my hair, I take the wrap down and it usually has body and looks smooth. Its like I need the rollers to give it that boost of body. Otherwise I look like a drowned chihuahua!

ETA- I just now went back to see the previous posts. I see that the roller, then wrap method has already been suggested! Sorry!
