Are there any naturals here who have never had a perm?

Hey, Serena. You guys really do pay attention

Yeah, I'm a forever natural. Back in the day I wanted to try a perm, but I was always scared 'cause my mom and sis had jacked-up hair after perms.

Get this -- I've never even ever had my hair professionally done!! I never have really had a "style," so I've just always taken care of my hair myself.

I guess I'm just kind of scared of beauticians

Wow Nay!!! Now that is different!! It's interesting, you've never been to a stylist, but that also means a lot of negative experiences you've never had to deal with too!!! You also have the hair to prove it, that we can grow and take care of our own hair without spending a mint! Your hair is beautiful! Great job!!!

I have been mostly perm free, I've had it relaxed maybe 3 or 4 times in my life, but whenever I relaxed it it never got straight, it was I guess it what you would call texturized and not that different from my natural hair. I don't think my hair really responds to relaxers cause I could still wear an afro with my hair "relaxed". I plan to be perm free for the rest of my life, because I see no point to relaxing my hair and I can do the same things and more with my natural hair.

You're so lucky Nay

You've avoided so much that many have experienced and your hair is to die for!

Thanks for the hair compliments, you guys. To be honest, when I grew up, folks in my neighborhood were just too broke to have their hair professionally done. My dad was cheap with a capital C. Shoot, he got mad if we used too much toilet paper!! He sure wasn't going to pay to have my hair done. So I had to learn to manage on my own.

Then when I got older and could afford to pay someone else, I just didn't want to. I figured it was one thing if I burned my ear or burned out some hair. I couldn't be mad at me. But if someone else messed up on my head, I would have been really mad. So I basically just didn't trust anyone else. And on top of that, by then my sis and mom had bad beauty shop experiences. So that scared me even more.

This board is the best. You know why? You ladies make me appreciate something that I always took for granted -- my hair. Back in the day when I'd see ladies with "fly" styles, I'd kind of feel that my big style-less hair was homely. But now I know that what's most important is having HEALTHY hair, and loving whatever grows!!

ITA. You are proof that you dont need a salon to maintain healthy hair. I havent went to the salon in about 5 months. But my hairdresser is the best when she does my hair. So I pretty much trust her. But I might have to go to the salon to get trims only, since my hair is natural. When I was relaxed I trimmed my own hair because I could see what ends to be clipped. On natural hair i find it extremely difficult because my hair is curly.

Nay,

Your dad and my dad must be brothers. Nobody in my house went out to get their hair done. My mom pressed the girls hair and my dad cut the boys hair. After years of teasing in high school about my nappy hair, I got my virgin hair permed as a freshman in college. But by then it was too late to get with get with relaxed hair regime. When all that hair broke off I went back to the hot comb.

During the first couple of years in college I tried out a few hair stylists but none of them really stuck. And, I too have not experienced wearing my hair cut into a "style" either.

I just had my very first relaxer Dec 10, 03. So far I only had 1. I will get my touch up the end of March. I had been getting my hair pressed since I was 5 years old.

I've been natural most of my life. I didn't get a perm until I was a freshman in high school and I started growing my hair out as a junior in college.

= 7 years relaxed, 17.5 years natural

I was also natural most of my life. I relaxed for the first time after I graduated H.S., and I've been relaxed ever since. I'll be natural again some day.

Kasey, it's good to know it wasn't just our household

. And what used to really kill me was as I'm sitting in the kitchen in front of the stove trying to press my hair, my father would belly-ache about how much he hated "the smell of burnt hair." So he would insist that I go get the little portable fan. Oh, yeah. That really helped. All that did was blow the burnt hair smell around in circles

Hey, one good thing: Kasey, I think our time has finally arrived. Nowadays I think the no-style style is in. So we are finally in vogue!

I have never had a perm, and i think am a little too chicken to get one. lol I was raised in a family that never even touched a perm. I did not know what a touch up was until i was 17. I am 22,btw.I know pathetic. I did not even know that people had perms until high school. I know you are thinking this girl is stupid.

lol I used to see people get there hair rinsed wavy or straight and think that was normal. I used to get my hair pressed at the hairline to get rid of the waves and the rest curled. I just figured people got there hair blew out and curled because that is what i saw. I know that permed hair should not be pressed but that is what i saw all the time. The messed up thing i thought i was in the norm of being perm free my entire life. I found out soon i wasn't.
