What was the reaction you got from family and friends?

I was in Walmart last week and the people in line behind me were laughing at my hair. Most of my co workers don't say anything while others just say 'Oh, you cut your hair' and when I say yes they don't say anything else.

Every now and then I will get a compliment but not often. I live in a very small town and they are not use to seeing a woman with a TWA.

Girl, where are you from? People say oh your hair is cute...I have gotten no negative responses...In church, this morning there were a lot of women sporting a nice rather cute TWA...I think the TWA is about to come popular...

People can be SO rude sometimes. My parents hate it and make comments about it to me but I try not to let them get me down! As long as your hair is neat, you should be proud to flaunt it. If I ever feel discouraged, I just to to LHCF or I google photos of proud black women for inspiration.

I live in a very small town in Mississippi and it is not common. My hair is only about a 1 1/2 inch long streched so I have a very short TWA. I keep it very neat and it has a nice curl pattern to it but I went from shoulder lenghth to this and I guess people don't understand why.

I am not going to let other people's opinion bother me as long as I can deal with it until I get some length I will be ok.:look:

when you have shiney healthy hair and its even longer then theirs.. they well be like  my mom complains about my hair all the time but its all good love tha fro and take care of it :) !:D

Oh boy...let's not even mention my parents' comments!!! :(

I have two roomates, One just did her big chop so we are soooo supportive of one another. The other one, who by the way I don't really like, comes up to me while I'm in the mirror and just sticks her hand in my hair WITHOUT ASKING. Then she says, "Do you have a relaxer in your hair?" WTF?? Come on how can I have a relaxer with my hair that short and curly/nappy????? Are you kidding me?

Girl you in FIYAH in that pic!!!!!! Very pretty!!!!!

Ok now I can respond to the thread!!!!

Girl don't let the negative comments get you down. People will alwasy have something to say so just stick to your goals and trust me when your hair has grown the haters will emerge and still have soemthing to say so just do YOU!!!!!!

Thanks ladies for the words of encouragement. I will continue strong in my hair growth journey.:)

I have had the twa about 4 times in my life. Nobody gives a diddly in the cities I frequent. The twa and everything in between goes in L.A, NYC, ATL, DC but in TX its coming around more.

Now that its grown a bit and I wear a wild sometimes curly and sometime blownin in da wind fro. I get loads of compliments from everyone. I have two accountants at the job crushing and chasing me down everychance they get:lachen: . Just found out one had a crush on Angela Davis back in the day. He told me your hair is so sexy and I said in return how about my ***:lachen:

Here are the weird comments "how do you get your hair like that", "is that all your hair?" and "Ohh that's a weave" . When black folk ask me how I get my hair like this I say "I'm a negress it comes with the territory":lachen:

I'm sharing all this to say girl whatever your hair plans you gotta feel good about you first and your hawtness will flow. You may inspire others too.

Two coworkers have bitten my style unsuccessfully though. You cannot cut your hair off bald nor wear a nappy fro w/o altering your wardrobe a bit. It's called adding some flava if you ain't got it already. :lachen:

Girl I know exactly how you feel and if I didn't have this site I would have failed and never attempted to stick with it. I work in Corporate america and the company I work for is always on the news for one thing or another and so of course there are certain standards Let me tell you this they said the exact thing "oh you cut your hair-- oh its cute....... I think... what are you doing". Going natural - whats that? - You'll see. Then a few months later they put a perm on my desk. A PERM or relaxer. I was so shocked I did not know what to do and there are very few blacks where I work very few so few that there are only four on my floor. That was something to get through right there. My family had a hard time. but I had began to love my hair and its texture and the freedom of styling it quicker then I use to or sometimes not at all. I got to the point I did not care what anyone thought- at one point I went out with twist that stood up on my hair and I did not care. Also I encouraged my cousin to do it and she did and she hooks that hair up and thats what we do. we communicate weekly about all our ups and downs. You can do the same with us. I am encouraged by the pictures they encourage me all the time. The lenght the amount of time it took this person or that to reach their goals I love it. You'll be fine. Trust me

Tootuff...DO YOU! I liked to say that it's gonna get easier...but it might not. As long as you love your hair, bump everyone else. That may seem hard now, but the more you learn to love your hair, really love your hair, the easier it will become. I expeirenced similar reactions that you have...I mean when I was reading what your coworkers wrote it could have been what mine said word for word: One of my coworkers even look so shocked, that she acted like she didn't see me. Came in the next day, (I assume after she composed herself) as was like, 'Oh, you cut your hair...it looks cute.'...I was like...'humph' and went about my business.

Stay natural. Love yourself as God does and you will be fine.

:lachen: :lachen: :lachen: I know that really isn't funny but the nerve of the punk that put it there. Shows they have no heart/weakazz why the mystery? Chile I would have really came in with my hair tow up just for that mess.

Trudy did you go to the big big boss about this incident. Those fools must not realize they could catch a case for some mess like that. You could have been traumatized. Oh I forgot your not in California "the I'll sue yo *** capital and win". :look:

most family and friends either haven't seen it or didn't say anything. anyone who did say something liked it. a couple asked why i did it.

i am noticing a lot more white women clutching their purses around me, something that almost never happened when my hair was relaxed.

There was someone here whose friend kept bashing her about her natural hair. She relaxed while her friend secretly transitioned and BCd. Her friend now has waist length natural hair while she has relaxed hair that was not healthy. These same haters could be plotting girl. Don't let another hater win! You look good. Who cares what they think!

Did you ever report this to anyone? That's unacceptable.

I had my guard up. I was prepared for people to make ignorant comments and ask stupid questions. I still got that, but I got a very positive response also that far outweighed the bad....it wouldn't have mattered to me much anyway. Some people are very jealous minded and instead of complimenting someone on something they admire, they'd rather lash out at that person b/c they obviously possess a sense of courage that they do not. I think it's a bold statement when you cut off ALL your hair. The average woman can't do that. What's also funny is that the handful of biddy's that turned their nose up at me or gave me the yeah right look when I told them my hair was natural have since been asking me advice on going natural themselves.

I know it's easier said than done, and we all want to look our best, but try not to let people's negative comments, or lack thereof discourage you in your natural journey, it will be well worth it in the long run! ;)

I think people who laugh and are rude to TWA wearers are just upset that they don't have the courage or confidence to pull it off themselves, at least from my experience. Shake the haters off and let your hair grow long and healthy and see who's laughing then.

You ladies are the greatest. I am so happy I found this board because without your help I would never had the courage to try this.

The first two weeks after I BC'd I wore a wig that was itchy and very uncomfortable and decided that I was just going to work with what I had but I can't lie............I WILL BE SO GLAD WHEN I GROW SOME HAIR!!!:lachen:

Everyone (outside of my fam) loved it. My parents were just like "oh ok" but I think that's b/c they still have that 'only long hair can be beautiful/self hate' stuff going on. (Btw, my mom still makes snide remarks about my natural hair, although it's longer than hers now). My DH likes it either way, he wishes I would buzz cut it (!!!). I think you just have to carry your confidence with you regardless. I loved the simplicity of my TWA, didn't love dealing with other people and their issues. But when I get tired of my hair I'll probably bc it again. :)
