Airdrying can cause split ends? Airdry ladies come in here pls!

I just read a thread about using heat. A few ladies mentioned that they prefer heat over airdrying. They noticed split ends when they air dried their hair. I guess I don't get the connection between airdrying and split ends. How could split ends be an "end result" of air drying?

Do you or your stylist notice any problems with your ends being split, thin or unhealthy?

What do you do to ensure or protect your ends?

IDK if it causes split ends but it does cause my hair to dry rough if I let it dry down. For this reason, I air dry in a bun - smoothing it back and tucking the ends under helps a bit with the frizziness, which can *lead* to split ends and breakage because the cuticles are raised. You may also try a few or several bantu knots. I did about 7 knots, left out an inch or two of hair, secured with a bobby pin and then rolled the ends. It came out really silky and pretty. :lick:

No I don't believe this to be true. Heat can cause split ends because it damages the hair cuticle. Airdrying just doesn't make the hair as sleek as using heat and so what ever damage or split ends or frizz you have at the ends of your hair becomes more noticle. I use serum to help keep my ends from frizzing up.

No. I airdry all the time, and I do not have any split ends. I do moisturize and seal before setting in protective style to dry, paying special attention to my ends.

Airdrying does not cause split ends....Some women experience hard hair after air drying because they haven't found the right products to airdry with yet...

Heat can be deceiving because it will sometimes temp. seal and close the cuticle ....Giving an appearance of healthier hair...

I have been using the method of air drying for over a year and have only needed 1 trim and have grown my hair from APL to WL..

I don't think it causes split ends. I generally air dry my hair, and when I do it's at its healthiest and I get fewer splits.

ITA with everyone! I too have been airdrying for three years and have had much success.

Traycee, you are on point about finding out which products works best with your hair so your hair doesn't dry hard.

air drying caused me to have too much shedding and broke to small pieces of my hair off! My crown was growing back (my hair always likes to break there) and now a patch near my dang ear, that's what I get for airdrying! my hair needs heat!

I have followed and tried the techniques of the experts on here but still my hair just doesn't like it. I've put the best leaves ins and all that but still my hair would shed tooooo much.

Air Drying doesn't work for my hair either... But, neither does direct heat. Roller setting has been really good for my hair. It allows my hair to get straight without using a blow dryer with comb attachment and then a flat iron. That basically fries my hair straight. my hair is OK after the frying treatment, but after that its breakage city. So, I guess the answer is I need heat too... Just not direct heat. :)

This is me too. I think airdrying can cause split ends if your hair isn't moisturized well. And if you try and comb and/or detangle your hair without the proper moisture, breakage is bound to happen.

I think it depends on the hair type. I know that airdrying my fine 4b hair caused havoc on my stands. When you airdry the cuticles are raised for a longer period of time, this may cause harm to fine strands that are already lacking in cuticle layers. Raised cuticles lead to porous hair, porous hair leads to dry hair, dry hair leads to breakage and splits.

I found rollersetting to be a healthier way to dry my hair.

I don't have a problem with airdrying or my ends being dry or rough. I put alot of moisturizer on it an seal it. I also wet bun. My ends not to bad. When my hair dries, its smooth and managable. I like it alot and its easy for me to deal with.

Girl you know you have a lot of hair. How long does it take for your hair to air dry?

Air drying dries my hair out, makes if feel hard, and causes it to look a mess. I keep trying it because people keep saying how their hair grew so much while doing this, but I keep getting the same results.

Can I get some advice on how to do it correctly since people are saying that it doesn't work because we aren't moisturizing correctly.

I mostly 99% of the time I air dry my hair. I am natural 4a/4b mix on my head. So I don't know if my opinion is needed in this thread.

I only know that less heat is more. Here is a great article: AIR DRY YOUR HAIR

After my wash/cowash, I apply a leave in, put a moisturizer on top of the leave in and seal with an oil. Then I proceed to style in knots, pigtails, rollers on the ends, or hang straight.

Nothing all that great but I love the way my hair turns out. I think Traycee said it best...it depends on the hair products you use.

I do gently smooth my hair strands in sections. This gives me the opportunity to have "straight" hair without heat. In addition, I can throw on a scarf (from Sylver) and that adds to the smooth set I get. So, I really don't miss the illusion that heat gives (as Traycee mentioned earlier) since I get straight hair

What I do, is supersoaked my ponytail with conditioner then seal. The next day, I take down the bun and moisturize it again. The conditoner I use is GVP Paul Mitchel Leave in conditioner, its really good. It balance the moisture in your hair, then I seal w/Hairveda Vatika frosting.....Then I bun it up. Tie down with a silk scarf.
The next day, I use a regular leave in moisturizer and seal.

You just have to find the right products for your hair.. My Caucasian friend let me have a bottle of her Paul Mitchel Leave in conditioner, to help me with my dry hair, and it worked for me and I been buying it every since, well the GVP version anyway...

Do you mean GVP The Conditioner? If so, I put this back last night...I knew I should have tried it!

Try adding CHI Silk infusion as the last product for your leave in (on wet hair) if your hair dry rough. I usually use the CHI silk infusion and one more product as leave in.

That can very well happen. Some of the ladies here rinse their hair with cold water to close the cuticles. I haven't been brave enough to try that but I will this summer....

Hum, I was wondering about using something like Silk Infusion. Thanks!

I got more split ends when I used direct heat on my hair. So far my best air drying results occur after setting my hair in bantu knots. I first towel dry my hair with an old T-shirt then I apply a leave-in conditioner then a detangling and shine leave-in. My hair doesn't like setting lotions and gel. I then detangle each section prior to placing in the bantu knots. The smaller the knots the shinier and softer my hair.

I don't know how airdrying can cause splits, hair dryers haven't been around that long, and how do think women dried their hair? they had to air dry. When I was relaxed, I would make sure that I would blow dry my hair straight, because I read somewhere that women shouldn't air dry their relaxed hair ,it will lead to breakage and splits.
