After Pregnancy Hair

Hello Lovely Ladies!

Ok, I'm sure someone has posted something like this in the past, but instead of me searching for it, I'm being lazy and just posting it again! :lachen:

It's been said that after women have babies, they start to experience "after pregnancy" hair loss for about 3-6 months due to your body getting back adjusted to your pre-pregnancy hormones.

Does anyone know of any regimens, supplements, vitamins, etc, that can prevent this from happening? I am due on May 23rd, and I am trying to stock up all of my post pregnancy items now so I can have on hand and start immediately afterwards.

Anyone have any ideas?

You might be one of the lucky ones and not lose your hair.:yep:

I did......and the only thing I can say.......is moisturize and leave it alone as much as possible. It will grow back.

Maybe others can chime in on what they did.

HTH :)

i'll warn you now, post-partum shedding is a ****** :wallbash:

i was told that if i was breastfeeding on demand and continued taking my prenatals religiously, it wouldn't be as dramatic. i promise you, the day my son turned 3 months i got out of the shower after cowashing and looked at my reflection in the mirror. my hair was a ball of frizz. i figured i should've detangled so i pulled at a section with my fingers.

THE ENTIRE SECTION CAME OUT IN MY HANDS.

i had to put my hair in box braids for the month, literally taking them down every day and combing out handfuls of hair. i don't know how i didn't end up with bald spots. then suddenly after a month - i was back to normal and it was like nothing ever happened. :look:

when my mom had post-partum shedding though, she had slightly more shedding than normal (instead of all her hair jumping ship at once like me) but hers lasted for months and months. i don't know if that's a difference between her body and mine, or between having girls (her) and having a boy (me).

i wish you the best though. every day i just wanted to shave my head bald :perplexed

:yep: Continuing to breastfeed for at least 9 months, and staying on top of your prenatals help, a LOT. The shedding is caused by the leaving of that brew of pregnancy hormones, and BF'ing helps them settle slower rather than a sudden drop that would happen with early weaning.

:look: Also, placenta encapsulation is supposed to help, as it provides mom with a longer term source of those pregnancy hormones, but it's usually not super easy to find someone who can do it (unless you are in a 'crunchy' area, like the Northwest). I know there is one woman that will do it for you long-distance - you send her the placenta, she sends you the capsules.

Congrats on the babe!

Sounds like breastfeeding is a great thing to do to prevent hair loss, however unfortunately due to my line of business I am not going to be able to breastfeed so hopefully there are more options.

Ah, that sucks. Pumping might be a useful alternative - at least babe is still getting the enormous lifetime health benefits and you are still able to slow the shedding.

Otherwise, just be ready for it. Usually, you end up with about as much hair as you started with before you got pregnant - it'll be a little thinner for a while, but it'll fill back in......

Hey Enscott! Congrats. I am one month behind you girl. No wonder I have not seen you around these parts!

Anything with garlic is said to help curb shedding. Nutrine Shampoo is the one that everyone around here seem to mention repeatedly. I have heard others mix olive oil with a garlic clove to run on scalp and prepoo.

Peppermint oil stimulates the scalp. Also, anything with cinnamon tightens the pores which curbs shedding as well. I use Capilo's Sole and Cinnamon Rinse, a Dominican rinse, and it stopped my shedding cold.

I had to look up placenta encapsulation. I thought it was a vitamin or something. All I can say is OMG!!!! I'm not trying to knock it if this is your thing...but now I think that I have heard it all.

I am 2 weeks postpartum and went to the stylist and had only a few shed hairs after the wash... So, I am keeping my fingers crossed!! I co wash and pin my hair up daily so I am hoping to maintain as much hair as possible. Oh yeah and I am still taking my prenatals....

Hello LadyEsquire! Congrats on your little to be as well! Yes, I've been on a slight LHCF hiatas due to me preparing for motherhood, however I've been quietly lurking the boards. :lachen: Your hair looks fantastic by the way!

Thank you soooo much for the suggestion about the Nutrine Shampoo and garlic! I too have heard a lot about garlic helping hair loss, so that's definitely something I am going to try! Thanks again!

Make sure you post pics of your precious little bundle once he/she arrives.

I had a son and BF for a little bit too, but I had two to three months of shedding...starting at month 3...I used ALter Ego Cren and only combed my hair once a week...I wore my hair in a ball and tied in a scraf at night.

THANK THE LORD I still have a thick grade of hair...I think I only lost what didn't shed during the pregnancy...as my hair completly stopped shedding when I was 4 months preggie.

I went throught this twice...once after stopping BC pills and then after having my son...the BEST advice is to be very gentle with hair, comb only about once a week (you'll have lots of shedding hair stored up, so be careful detangling), eat healthy and continue to take those pre-natels...everything helps a little in the end as to how much you're left with. HTH

My hair did shed, but it just went back to its natural thickness. I think I could just have hennaed and get it back to where it was when I was pregnant.
