....I'm going to the hair salon this weekend for a touch-up. I love the stylist, been going there for a long time. The problem is the shampoo girl- after she dries my hair she takes a narrow-tooth comb and rips right through my hair. I'm not one of those people who are really good at putting people in their place. What I would like to know is, how do I tell her to slow down and not do this without causing a big fuss? She's pretty nice most of the time so maybe it won't be a problem...

Just say OUCH! You can start from there. Say it where she can hear you and she'll get the hint.

Yes! Saying "Ouch!" works! That's what I did when I went to get my hair cut at a salon a week ago when she was using a blowdryer to straighten my roots.

But saying "Ouch" really isn't effective since you're not experiencing pain.

You could politely ask her to use a wide-tooth comb on your hair first. ;)

I would just ask her to use a wide tooth comb. I wouldn't say 'ouch' because then she could just continue using the small tooth comb 'more gently'. When I go to the salon, my stylist does everything to my hair. She knows I don't want an assistant/shampoo person doing anything to my hair. I remember once when my roller set was all dry, the girl almost broke her neck (yes, just a figure of speech  ) to get to me to remove my rollers. I just told her that I would do them myself because that's what I preferred. GIRL, JUST TELL HER TO USE THAT WIDE TOOTH COMB. Don't have your LHCF girls rollin' up on her to give her a :fishslap:

 That would be too funny! But thanks for your responses. I might just "excuse" myself to go to the ladies room and use the proper comb in there. Just so i can get the ickiest tangles out before she gets a chance to wack at them.

Wow! Do you have to go to her? Can you speak to the main stylist in advance and request a different person or that whomever gets you uses special care? Your post made me cringe.

Tell her you are tender head and need gentle hands or she can just skip the comb you will do it with your fingers. You must say something you can lose a whole month of growth from one person's rough hands.

My stylist is really, really good. But the shampoo person is not. :ohwell: The problem is, the only time when she (stylist) the chance to comb me out personally, is when things are slow, and very rarely is it slow in that shop. What I'm considering doing is asking her privately if she can take a few minutes to comb my hair because so and so does it much too fast and without care. Or else I'll just wait until she gets a minute.

If you don't want to say anything to her..my advice would be to bring your own comb (Jilbere Shower comb is great or wide tooth comb) and BEFORE she starts let her know you would like her to use your comb. That should not be a problem and its non confrentational...its like brining your own conditioner :D .

I see and hear this happening a lot and what I do is speak up before they have a chance to use a small comb or put any type of hair product in my hair..and it saves me a lot of stress...and they don't seem to have a problem with it at all.

Don't let her rip out your hair girl...If she doesn't stop someone will have to go up there and take that comb and :spank: her with it

Thanks. That's what I'll do then. I'll go and get the proper comb to take along with me. She's not a mean person, just ruff around the edges, so to speak. But she shouldn't have a problem using mine. And if she does, maybe you can catch a flight from New York and :hammer:

Good luck..I find this is the only way I can let other people do my hair....many stylists have developed bad habits..The salon I go to now when I first got there the shampoo person washed my hair 3 times and scrubed with her nails, so the next time before I leaned back in her chair I handed her my conditioner and asked her to wash only one time and no please no scrubbing (doing the gesture with my fingers--she didn't speak good english) I asked her to smooth it in circles...she had no problem with it.

Girl, you should not have to go through all of that. You should tell her what you like and what you don't like. There's always a nice way to say it. You're paying them, they're not paying you.

ITA with Allandra!

I had the same problem at my Dominican salon where the shampoo assistant was using the teeniest fine-tooth comb to detangle. One day I just had to focus on that image of leaving the salon in tears with my hair on the floor, and that solved it for me... I'd rather have her be mildly upset than me be distraught. So I sorta grimaced and asked her to get a comb with "los dentros... mas grande" .. bigger teeth in Sp. I think?. Anyways she complied, but the next visit I had the same problem with another lady -- I am thinking of simply taking my own medium-tooth bone comb the next time I visit. I'll make up something about liking the massaging action or something... lol :)

Good luck on this.. I know how hard it is to speak up but as you go along and put more effort and time and money into your hair, it will become easier believe me...
