About Mud Cleansing....

So I was thinking that in Africa, they probably never used shampoos. I mean I know they probably do now but I think Africans probably used mud to clean their hair. I think I'm going to start doing that, but of course I need some information from my hair encyclopedia which is you ladies.

If you use mud or if you are knowledgable about mud:

How often would you use a mud cleanse?

Can it losen your curl pattern?

Can it still be drying?

Does it actually get your hair clean?

Does it help with tangles?

That's all I can think of right now.

I ordered some rhasaoul clay mixed with cocoa butter, Rosemary, olive, jojoba and argan oil discs from an etsy store called Born Beautiful Bath and Body. I'll give it a shot, but how long should I wait to try them since I just washed my hair today?

Thank you.

I love move. I have very dry, low porosity 4b hair. I can use mud and not worry about my hair being just a mess.

How often would you use a mud cleanse? The right mud like rhassoul you can use several times a week but once a week is enough or every 2 weeks depending on you wash schedule.

Can it losen your curl pattern? I wish. It hasn't loosened mine but I can't speak for all curl patterns. If it could I would use it every day

Can it still be drying? Calcium Bentonite is drying. Rhassoul and Sodium Bentonite is more moisturizing when used correctly. (Don't use it more often or longer than your hair needs it based on what someone else is doing).

Does it actually get your hair clean? I feel like it does. I do a mudwash before I apply my color so my color adheres better. I find it works better for me than shampoo.

Does it help with tangles? My hair is softer so it is less likely to tangle. I also finger detangle my hair with the mud in it. The right mud recipe also helps.

The product sounds like it has some great ingredients in it. Because there are a lot of butters in it, it should be quite moisturizing. It isn't like a pure mudwash just so you are aware that this could feel differently than if you made your own.

You can use the mud today. I shampooed my hair, DCd and then did a mudwash. I often do them in the same day. Mud can be a cleanser, conditioner combo.

Thank you!!!

Why do you shampoo, DC and then mud? Does the mud cancel out the benefits of the DC? That's what I would think, but probably not or else you wouldn't do it.

I was going to use mud instead of shampoo, and try it once a week. What are the benefits of using the shampoo and mud all in the same day for you?

I'm usually doing all of that so I can color my hair. My color has to be the last step. So I shampoo so I can condition. I can't apply color over the conditioner because it won't take. So I do the mudwash after the conditioner to remove that film. Then I color. This is just my color application regimen. I was just sharing that so you would know you can shampoo and mudwash with no problem.

When I'm not coloring my hair I may just do the mudwash and apply my leave-in.

I'm currently using J. Monique's Naturals Dead Sea Mud Wash - love that stuff. I don't have the time to mix stuff, so I need mine already mixed. I use mine like @IDareT'sHair does as an overnight pre-poo. I love it this way too so I'm using it this way.

It really does make my hair very soft and gives it this uncanny ability to absorb the goodness of other products I use on my hair, especially my henna treatments. I don't know if I ever want to be without it and I don't know what took me so long to try it. It is messy going on, but because it tingles my scalp and smells divine :lick:, it doesn't bother me at all.

That looks good! I'm going to get some before I go back to Australia. I'm bringing as many products as possible with me! I was also going to try this Earth Shampoo from Catherine Marion. Ingredients are :

Berries (Sapindus Mukorossi Aqueous Extract), Aloe Vera, Water (Aqua), Bentonite Clay (Natural Cleanser), Moroccan Rhassoul Clay (Natural Cleanser), Xanthan Gum (thickener and stabilizer), Optiphen (paraben-free and formaldehyde-free), Pure Vegetable Glycerin (Natural Moisturizer, Peppermint Essential oil.

When you use the stuff you mentioned, the next day you use a regular shampoo and not a cream cleanser right? Then DC?

There is also a Jamiacia Rhasaoul cleansing conditioner from Inspiried beauty on etsy I would like to try. Ingredients:

Botanical Aqueous Infusion (Distilled water, Malva Sylvestris, Jamaica/Hibiscus Rosa-sinensis, Rosa Canina, Althaea officinalis, Arctium Lappa, Linum Usitatissimum), Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Moroccan Lava Clay, Cetearyl Olivate, Sorbitan Olivate, Oryza Sativa (Rice Bran) Oil, Mangifera Indica (Mango) Seed Butter Simmondsia Chinensis (jojoba) Seed Oil, Sodium Lactate, Glycerin, Honey, Vitamin B-5, Fragrance, Propylene Glycol (and) Diazolidiynl Urea (and) Iodopropynl Butylcarbanate (preservative), Xantham Gum.

I don't see the rhasaoul in that one though...is it the Morrocan lava clay?

No, no shampoo/cleanser at all. I just rinsed out the mud wash, hendigo'ed, then DC'ed.

I love mud/ clay. I've been using consistently for a little over two years. I have only ever mixed my own. I add no oils to my mix.

How often would you use a mud cleanse?
Once a week, but I have used it more often (multiple times a week).

Can it losen your curl pattern?
No.

Can it still be drying?
Possibly, if your mix isnt quite right, or left on too long, or if your hair isn't wet enough at the start. Sodium bentonite can be too drying for me on its own.

Does it actually get your hair clean?
Yes. But I mainly use water soluable products (no creams, grease, silicones). Its acts as a cleanser and DC on my hair. I use diluted shampoo rarely. I've seen some pics on another site that shows hair under a microscope after clay, showing results similar to co-washing. But for me, my hair and scalp look feel cleaner than when I have cowashed.

Does it help with tangles?
Yes, if applied in small sections and your mix isn't too thick. It clumps my coils and helps me to finger detangle thoroughly. I finger detangle/ finger comb 99.999% of the time and I rarely suffer from tangles (if I do its mostly at my nape where my hair rubs on my clothes).

Thank you! I was hoping on cutting out shampoo completely but I want to have a clean scalp. Maybe I'll use the mud on my length and a shampoo on my scalp while rinsing out the mud, or do you think the shampoo will wash away the benefits of the mud as it can also DC your hair too? I was actually going to use the mud and still use a DC afterward

Clay always leaves my hair (soft) and scalp feeling clean, unless I mix with coconut milk. I prefer a pancake batter consistency or slightly thicker to my mix. I only use clarfying shampoo first if it's been a good while (months), or I have heavy product to remove- in my case, its more paint or powder than an actual hair product :giggle:.

For me, I see no need to use both at the same time. A lot of people DC after mud. I started using mud on my hair via MHM and I learned that my hair prefers a DC before clay otherwise the conditioner tends to build up on my fine strands.

Ok I'm going to see what my hair prefers. Should I just mix with water first? Most of the products I ordered are pre mixed but two that should arrive first are not.

Yes, water. I'd say keep your mix very simple to start, maybe try a little oil if you know your hair really likes a particular one. If you are mixing the raw clay powder, then a little ACV (1tsp or so) will help to smooth the mix but too much will thin it out and make it very runny.

I like to include silk amino acids in my mix as it leaves my strands feeling smoother and stronger than when I leave them out.

I just took a look at their website and I really like the ingredients in their products. Have you tried the Bentonite and Rhassoul Detox?

Surely they need to make a larger bottle. Only 8oz! Wouldn't even cover me for one session. How do they advise to use this?

Um..yeah, I just checked out their directions. You may need a few bottles of this for it to perform how it should.

No I haven't. I have it in my stash but I haven't used it yet. I have a great feeling it's awesome though :yep:

I was thinking the same thing. I travel a lot, so I'm probably only going to use it when I travel. I don't want to have to mix anything.

In that case, nuh-uh. I need a lot of product for my hair. If it's costly, then it's a definite no :nono: :look:

This is the same reason why I'm buying stuff already mixed. I really don't want to have to mix anything up except my henna stuff.

Do you ladies feel the need to DC after mud washing? I got all my mud washes this week so I'm going to see if my hair likes this. A few of the mud mixes I got claim they're conditioners but I've been reading a lot of these muds & clays included in these products are used for cleansing.
