I'm just wondering on average, how many months will it take me to be able to put my hair in a ponytail? I don't care how long the ponytail is, just so I can pull it back. Thanks!

There are just way too many variables to even give you an average IMO. It depends on how much hair you start out with, how much growth you get, etc..... I was able to get all my hair pulled back in a scrunchie ~ 3 months after I chopped.

Cincy, how long did you transition or did you bc? Your hair is gorgeous, btw. :) I have about 3 or 4 inches of hair right now but I know its not long enough to pull back. Maybe in 6 more months? I didn't really wanna chop until it was long enough to pull back but I couldn't take it anymore.

I've been natural almost a year and right now I have 4 to 5 inches after a few dustings. It's still not long enough to put into a pony. :look: I've been natural almost a year. I probably need about 2 more inches. If your hair grows the norm 1/2 in a month, then it would probably be about 14 mths.

after 1.5 years (no transition, just bc) I can finally can put my hair in a pony tail. I can't tell you how many inches I have ... HTH

Into a ponytail that I was satified with about 14 months. I just got there. I also BCed and had about a half in of hair when I started out so thats a major factor. I have no clue how long my hair is in inches

I think it not only depends on your hair length, but shrinkage. I'm 19 months relaxer free, and I could put my hair back in a ponytail a couple of months ago with some effort (gel, etc.). In my photo album, I just pulled my hair back on Sunday. I have a lot of shrinkage (50%), so what you see is about 7" of hair in a little afro puff.

I was able to pull my hair in pony tail after about 7 mos...

edited to say..i did my b/c after maybe 2 mos..i had realllly short hair when i did my b/c, so i had to grow it out for a minute..

honestly? i think it took me about a month- two at the most... i wasn't using any growth aids but i think because this had been the shortest my hair has been for sooo long, i think thats why it grew quick... i had bc'ed but i had transitioned for about a year and a half before that to gain some length so i wouldn't be as "shocked" with the results when i finally chopped so i'd say i had about 4-7 inches on my head after i chopped (i suck at math so thats my guestimation!)

i had cut it til it was a couple inches past my ear and for the first few weeks i couldn't put it up at all and it was the most annoying thing! so until i could i took a black headband that matched my hair color and pushed it all the way back so that it appeared like it was in a pony  and it worked for a little while... i also started to use the coconut and lime "relaxer" to help loosen the curl up a bit so i could do a pony...it REALLY helped! ;) HTH

Hmmm... I should be close then. I'm gonna try it with some mango butter and fantasia gel when I take this weave down. I just wanna be able to put a phony pony on.

after a year I was able to put my hair in a very low nape pony tail...for a ponytail at the crown, approx 7 months

Thanks Bmore! At the time I chopped, my hair was about 3 months post relaxer. Now when I said I could get my hair in a pony, please note it was nothing to write home about, but I remember being so excited that I could get all my hair to actually fit in the pony without needing bobby pins. I'll have to see if I can find a pic to show what I was working with.

CBC, you hair is

Is there such a thing as being 80% natural and 20% relaxed? That's how I feel. I'm about 18 mos. post relaxer and I can get the back of my hair in a low or high pony. But the front... I need about 3 more inches. Which is why I'm trying to wait an BC in April. :perplexed

I agree with Cincy, it all depends on how much hair you have when you chop, the size of your head, and the rate of growth you typically get. I chopped really short and could make a pony at 10-11 months. It wasn't a pony I'd wear outside but I could grab most of my hair up.

My hair was less than half an inch 17 months ago.
I was able to put my hair into a ponytail when I had 7 inches of hair (after 14 months since having less than half an inch).

It also depends on the size and shape of your head.

I transitioned for a year then chopped. I could put mine in a pony tale when i chopped. I can wear a crown or nape pony.

let's see... i think it took me about 11-12 months to be able to do a ponytail without any gel or bobby pins.

Yeah it really depends. I bc'd at 11 months and could make a ponytail at the crown of my head 5 months later. It took about 10 months to make a low ponytail.

Here's a idea...when ur washing it, the water weighs it down and stretches it out..when ur rinsing under the water, get ur large tooth comb out, and comb it all up or back into the pony tail, thats the way i used to do it.

i would say however long it takes to grow to the 6 in mark, but everybodys head is different

I agree with this. I kept chopping, so it took me awhile. When I was at about 6-7 inches, I could pull it back.

Great idea!

My last relaxer was just over a year ago, and I did the chop in July. I can get my hair in and "ok" ponytail now.

Wow, thanks for all of the replies and suggestions!!! This thread has been so helpful! Ok, I'm going to BC when I have at least 6in of hair. I need to go buy a ruler so I can measure. Thanks, again!
