A promised land

With the trouble I see around the corner, this message is very timely. Thank Our Father and you for sharing.

Interesting. Today's sermon was from Jeremiah 29:1-14 when God told the Israelites to gon' ahead and stay still where they were, although it wasn't where they may have wanted to be, but he told them to stay there, build homes, plant gardens, and basically get comfortable there.

In this part of Jeremiah, God is the one who caused Israel to be carried away into Babylon. God told the people to pray for the place they had been carried away to in order that they may have peace themselves while they were there.

God told them they'd be there a while (70 yrs) BUT that he had a plan. And sometimes a part of His plan, entails us going through in some places that we may not want to be, but we still have to be obedient to God.

Thanks Sidney for obediently posting the message that the Lord gave you.. If it wasn't for anyone else, it was for me. I receive it as further confirmation on some thangs.

Wow...toil in the place we're in...in other words, don't give up, even though we haven't made it to our longed for destination. Our work in this place will be rewarded. Thanks for this word. :)

Oooo thanks for posting! God shared something with me from that exact section last night, Jeremiah 29...basically the same message you just spoke of. Thanks!

Yes, there are many scriptures in the gospel about persistence, sowing, knocking, etc. Just make sure God is leading. I blogged about that yesterday, Here it is. It's tangential to this very topic as well. http://www.longhaircareforum.com/blog.php?b=21182

This is very true. Thank you for posting it.

Thank you for posting, Sidney! This reinforces and confirms messages I have been receiving all summer. :yep:

Here is the full verse:

The land you are entering to take over is not like the land of Egypt, from which you have come, where you planted your seed and irrigated it by foot as in a vegetable garden. But the land you are crossing the Jordan to take possession of is a land of mountains and valleys that drinks rain from heaven. It is a land the Lord your God cares for; the eyes of the Lord your God are continually on it from the beginning of the year to its end.

Notice that the Canaan land is supplied by rain from heaven. In Egypt, the rain was supplied by the nile, so the people the people could give themselves credit for nourishing the land, because they had to build trenches with their feet or physically carry the water over to the land by the nile to nourish it. When God takes you to the destination, he wil be the supplier. You will know it is by God's hand because you will not be able to accomplish it by your own might. “Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit”, says the Lord (Zech. 4:6)

WOW, this whole post is so profound. You are so right, for a season God allows us to do things in our strength, but to truly possess the land He has for us we have to recognize that only HE can give it to us. And trust that He will sustain us there. :yep:

I love this interpretation, that is great and it makes so much sense. Thanks for your insight. And yes God is the only one that can sustain the blessing. The things man builds are never sustained.

I agree. I was just thanking God for this yesterday.

re: the op, this is a paradoxical word to me. Because it is true that the Promise never comes of our own labor. And yet we are called to diligence. Perhaps the work we are to be doing is simply growing in faith and obedience? How to be both diligent and also wait on the hand of the Lord?

This concept of our toil not producing God's promise has been rolling around in my mind lately. No one can do anything to fulfill a promise but the person who made it. The Promised Land is the land that is not worked for. But what does it look like in our lives to not work for it? Is it just a recognition? Is it focusing solely on obedience (responding to God's direction) rather than strategizing and making plans?

I think this word is definitely for me because I know it's confronting something within me, but I can't exactly figure it out. I have been thinking lately about working hard for the Kingdom...but the unearned Promised Land continues to come up. idk...I will continue to pray for understanding.

-Speechless... SPEECHLESS

I posted a wrong scripture earlier, apparently that was from the International Version of Sidney, smh! The real verse is:

Luke 6:46 New International Version
"Why do you call me, 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say?

Wow! Thanks for letting God use you! This is also confirmation for me concerning some things God is dealing with me on. Awesome word!:yep:

If the LORD delights in us, then He will bring us into this land and give it to us, a land which flows with milk and honey." Numbers 14:8

I know you all have heard that the Canaan land was a land that flowed with milk and honey. And this message has often been tied to the prosperity message. I believe the prosperity preachers have really made a mess of things, especially for Christians who truly seek God's heart and will for their lives. It's gotten to the point where you can't even mention blessings or increase without some christians getting uptight. But God does desire to bless you. I think I'm beginning a little bit where God's heart on this is. Notice in the numbers verse above, it says if the Lord delights in us. I've been studying the children of Israel a little and all God wanted to do was delight in them and lead them. He wanted to be their God. He wanted to provide for them. But God was dealing with people who were mules and horses. Some wanted to remain in slavery in Egypt because they were comfortable there, these are the mules. The other people were horses, they rushed ahead of God when God didn't respond quickly to them. Even Moses's brother Aaron helped the people build false idols and worship the golden calf when Moses took to long to descend from the mountain with a message from God. These people did not want to be led.

One of the most profound verses in the bible that I have ever read is this, "And I will be their God, and they shall be my people." I've seen it several times in the old testament and it always stops me in my tracks when I read it. God desires to be our God. But he can not be God to people who do not treat him as such. In fact there is a verse in romans I think that says, "Why do you call me Lord, but do not treat me as such?"

All of this is to say, that God is looking for neither the mule or the horse, but his very own sheep. Because his sheep hear his voice, but they also follow him. To these, he is the goodd Shephard. To these, he will lead to green pastures, to the promised land. If we delight the Lord, we should be a blessed people. And it's not a prosperity message, it is the gospel. It is a reflection of God's love for his people and the "end" is not selfishness and self exaltation, but the end point is to give God glory. People will be able to see God. It doesn't mean life will be problem free or that everyone will be wealthy, but we will give him glory even through misfortune, grief, and loss. That is what it means to have abundant life. That this Shephard is so good that we are obedient to him even in times of uncertainty or misfortune. That we are willing to die to ourselves for his gospel. That takes obedience.

The key to reaching the promised land is to be a delight to the Lord. Be obedient to his word as sheep are obedient to the shephard. And it doesn't mean that you are a good christian that follows the word, you have to be listening!!!!!. There are many good christian people who are following in their own way and putting God's name on it, and he isn't behind it. We bring God the most glory when we are truly led by him. See even God's sheep can be misguided but he will bring us back. But it is our duty to learn to hear from him, because he says "my sheep hear my voice AND they follow me." If you don't get anything out of this whole message, know this.....we must know what the will of the lord is and be obedient to it.

Speechless yet again

Thank you soooo much! This thread has truely been a blessing to me. I am in tears.... I was just driving to work crying out to my heavenly father!!!! Thank you soo much!!!

Be encouraged Do Si Dos, it's only for a season. Where you are is just temporary, hold on and don't let you faith fail.
