i have a ceramic flat iron but i want to invest in a better one.

what should i look for in quality and whats the best i can get for my buck?

You want one with a PTFC heater. The more expensive ones incl CHI, UNIL and HAI have this (there are others). This heater along w/the ceramic plates allow your hair to be heated from the inside out and not the outside in like traditional heaters. A more expensive iron will also have a better heat recovery time: when you press the plates against your hair, it releases and loses heat. A good iron will quickly recover and maintain your set heat.

Now when I say more expensive, that doesn't mean you have to break the bank. A lot of people have bought mid range ceramics and are VERY happy w/them. When I say expensive, I would mean over 50 dollars. Prices do vary.

Let us know what you end up getting!

I have the HAI and I LOVE IT!!!!!

. After getting my hair done at the hairdressers after a long stint of not going (yrs) I was so impressed with the outcome (remarkabl shine, hair flowing like a white person's) that I wanted everything she used so I could get the same result. Well, needless to say she used this iron.

I hear good things about the CHI but one caveat: the felt covering sometimes comes off/un-glued. There are a lot of good irons out there, but I LOVE my HAI (the one w/the blue plates).

do you have a picture of the heater. I am so confused about all the options. LOL

Hmmm... I don't have a pic of the heater. I just know that the higher priced ones have them. It goes like this: regular flat irons heat up by using coils. Your hair gets heated from the outside in, thus, the potential for more damage. Mid range ceramic irons have the PTC heater. Better than coils, but are not as powerful to have quick heat recovery and penetration. THEY DO WORK... but not as well as those w/the PFTC heater (I may have the letters re-arranged. Sorry). Anyhoo- you want a ceramic iron w/this type heater. Now a lot of people have made a big deal about whether the plates are coated vs. actual ceramic plates. Well, I'm going to leave that alone. The real difference in price and quality is the heater.

Someone has posted a thread on the visual differences using a Jilbere (mid-range) and i think a CHI. You should check it out. I personally bought a Jilbere before my HAI and I can confirm that there is a difference!

I use the same ceramic flat iron used by my stylist. It is the Farouk CHI Turbo Mini .7 inch Ceramic Flat Iron. It cost about $170.00. I received it as a birthday gift from my parents.

My BF bought my FHI from www.aveyou.com and we got good customer service

More importantly, this iron is the BOMB!!! It straightens out my natural hair very nicely (just like my stylist) without all the heat. I don't think I'll be going to my stylist for occasional presses anymore because now I can completely do it myself

Thanks, Rushgirl, for recommending this flat iron!!!

This thing really is convenient and a lifesaver. Plus, I've only used it 2x and it's already paid for itself
