4a/b Naturals: Do you comb your hair?

I ask this because I've talked to a few naturals who don't support this. Also, in general, I feel that many naturals don't feel that they can have manageable and conservative natural hair (if they so wish). In my opinion, the untamed afro or finger-combed twists/braids aren't the only styles that we can wear.

I personally wash my hair daily (w/ conditioner; Suave Humectress), comb it daily (w/ Infusium 23 & EVOO), and pull it back in a phony-bun (until mine is long enough for my own).

So what are you're thoughts?

I feel the same way you do! Except I use those Plastic Picks, My hair don't work with Finger combing, I comb my conditioner thru, I mean if this works for you then keep doing it, If there is no breakage or Damage then continue, I too am gonna get me a phony pony as soon as my hair grows out enough to cornrow, I hate gelling it back, I like to cornrow it back and clip on my phony pony LOL!!!!

when my hair was shorter I combed it everyday with no problems as my hair gets longer is no way I could comb it everyday and retain length I would have thinned out hair, I co-wash probably every other day or daily and I finger comb in the shower not with the conditioner in it like I see other folks do I finger comb after I rinse the conditioner out, I only wash once a week and I comb out that day only and I have l normal shedding nothing crazy, I realize as a natural every length is a different procedure you would realize that as go along, hth

No I don't comb my hair at all. But I don't see any reason to. I don't get tangles. I just run my fingers through wet hair in the shower and call it a day.

Yes I comb my hair but not daily...but I see nothing wrong with your routine. ;)

And I agree with you about the untamed fro & twists/braids not being the only styles for naturals. The style we can do with our hair is unlimited!

I do a variety of styles...some require combing, some don't, it all depends on how I feel. Right now, I've been trying to stick with rollersetting weekly. Near the end of the week, I put my hair into an afro puff.

And that Infusium 23 stuff is DA BOMB! I use it as a leave-in and to comb my hair before I roll the section of hair around the roller. It stops breakage instantly for me!

I comb my hair every time I wash it. Right now that is every week/week and a half. I don't see anything wrong combing frequently if it works for your hair, but personally I could not comb my hair daily. It's very thick and that would cause damage and I don't have the time to spare either.

:)

only when I wash twice a week. I comb it about 3-4 times to detangle twice, then comb in oils and setting lotions.

Then once or twice a week between washes

I have a twa, so there really isn't much too comb, so I don't do it. Also, I find that when I do comb, even a little bit, I get much more breakage than when I just fingercomb.

I comb my hair when I wash or co-wash in order to "clear" out any dead hair that may be caught up in the coils and curls and kinks.

I also brush my hair under the same circumstances. While my hair is moist I put it into two cornbraids. After my hair dries, it looks and behaves like a blow out and I can comb and brush through it no problems.

Only in the shower with conditioner, then I put in in a braid and don't comb again until next time. I wash 1 to 2 times a week. During the week I moisturize, and put different covers, claws, etc on the braid. I don't know how to cornrow, and I've only worn twists once.

I think we just have to do what works best for our hair. Your method seems fine to me, and as long as you are getting your desired result you should be okay.

ETA: I agree with guesswho. As my hair gets longer, combing daily doesn't work well for me.

There is no way I could comb my hair every day. I would be asking for damage. I comb once a week-in the shower w/my shower comb.

I need to stay away from my boar bristle brush though :sekret: I try to get smooth hair -but you can only get so far w/my hair type.

I agree that there are a multitude of styles, both wild and tamed that 4a/4b naturals can wear. On a daily basis I clip my hair up and it looks neat.

I comb my hair once a week when I wash it, in the shower, with my shower comb, and sometimes when i am outting products in my hair, i part it with my shower comb and put the product on, but not comb it out

Combs are entirely overrated. There's no way I could comb my hair everyday because there's too much of it. I comb my hair when I wash it which depending on the style I'm wearing is once a week up to once a month. If I'm in twists or braids, then my hair doesn't get combed until that style is retired.

Okay so if you don't comb it what do you do with your hair?

When I'm not in braids I twist my hair or straighten it. I'm tired of twists and my hair won't stay straight for too long as the weather get warmer.

So what do you do? Co-wash and ponytail? How do you keep it neat and tame? I need some ideas because i'm not very creative or experimental with my hair. I just want it to grow with as little manipulation as possible to retain growth.

^pretty nappy hair can you flat twist? You could flat twist the frontof your hair and then have the back in the bun.

I don't comb everyday that would be suicide for my hair. I fingercomb. I do comb my hair sometimes.

I only comb hair on wash days which is every week to 2 weeks nowadays. Used to be twice a week, but my hectic schedule got rid of that. I comb my hair with my the conditioner in. Somtimes I get better shed hair removal using my Denman Brush instead of the wide toothed comb.

Aww God, I must be going wrong somewhere:perplexed

I come my hair about twice a day, I dont know why but I like to. When my hair is very well looked after and spongey it doesnt break one bit even though I have an afro but recently whilst I am nursing my hair back to health I break about 60 hairs a day from combing.:(

i only comb when I shampoo which is 1x/wk. If I do conditioner washes or water only rinses during the week I fingercomb. If I combed daily I would be causing more harm than good.

You're losing 60 hairs a day for combing? Then why do it?

I USED to comb more frequently and lose big wads of hair. Now I only do it once a week during wash/conditioning. There's no reason for me to otherwise.

I comb my hair about once every 2 weeks. The rest of the time I just finger comb while wet/w condish. My hair is much thicker from doing this and I have less breakage. Plus because of the texture of my hair once I comb it the strands are just going to wrap right back around each other. The only time I comb my hair more often is when I wear it straight. Then I comb probably 2x per week.

Is it breakage or shedding? If it is shedding, then that is well below the 150 expected. If it is breaking, find the cause. I don't think combing is bad for the hair if your hair is healthy. I comb less now that I am natural just because it is more of a chore than when I was relaxed. My mom used to comb my natural hair everyday to everyother day when I was a child with no problem.

I don't comb my hair, I only brush it to detangle on wash day, or smooth it down when I'm wearing a puff. I only use a comb for parting when I'm putting my hair in protective style. I think I have enough breakage without combing

The other day I counted the lil Black short hair and there was about 30 after combing my hair. I know youre meant to have about 100,000 hairs on your head but it still annoys me but I think I maybe transitioning.

I comb my hair with an extra wide-tooth comb when rinsing out DC. During the week if I spritz the the hair with water after moisturizin and oiling I use my Denman to gently detangle, starting from the ends and working up.

i comb my hair when i have conditioner in it and when i take my 4 braids out from airdrying my hair to prepare to wear a puff or braidout which i barely wear braidouts because they don't be coming out right. i'm i the only one who combs my hair for preparing to put it in a puff? it's hard for me to not comb out or else i'm not going to have a stretched out puff.
p.s. i use an afro pick to prepare for my puffs.

I comb my hair at every wash, which now is about once every 1 1/2-2 months.

ETA: I use a regular wide toothed comb and Surge Plus 14 as a detangler.
