3B, 3C and Braided extensions

Hey LHCF'ers,

I'm considering geting some box braid extensions(think old school Janet Jackson poetic justice) or some kinky twist. I just need a change and may have to drop the ball on the bun challenge cause I'm just so bored
My problems in the past with extensions have been slippage and frizzing up fast. They just don't seem to last as long and look nice. I'm also using megatek and will probably have to rinse at least once a week right? Is there something I can do to make my braids/twist last longer and look nice? I need some help and change. I'm borederplexed

The same happens to my little sister. About a month ago i put single braids in both hers and my mums hair. She (3b) took them out just over a week ago and my mum (4b) still has them in. I find that Canerows tend to stay nice in her hair so i just do them for her every week. Sorry i couldnt help too much:-(

Do you use synthetic hair? I think syntrhetic hair lasts longer than human hair for me?

Is it a good idea to use megatek with extensions at the same time? I want to continue using MT cause I'm seeing results but I also want to feel cute and don't feel cute in a bun. My head and face is fat lol

Slippage will always be an issue. By week 2 my braids start looking really fuzzy. I've never been able to keep braids past 4 weeks.

Bumping!! i have this very same problem, it's very hard for me to keep kinky twists in my hair..my friends are always laughing at how i have to redo my twists to "tighten them"..otherwise they slip right out

Mega tek can be used with braids, but the slippage factor is going to happen no matter what your texture. When I was braiding 1-3 hair I would Poo, D-con, let completely dry, no add ins. Only after hair was braided and styled would I saturate the braids with diluted conditioner and braid spray.The secret tip keeping the frizzy down is spray then let dry while under a scarf. Also you can use WN or SCurl on the extensions to help the frizz.

Um... good luck with that. Back when I last got braids I remember the ends of my hair would be working their way out before I even left the shop. By week two it was a bona fide WRAP! I was frizzy all over and braids had slipped as much as four inches from the root. All I could do was saturate my ends with gel to lay them down a little, not wash the braids, and PRAY!!!

I put in some braids in 2007 and they slipped quite a bit, but thought it was because of my poor technique (ok, it could partially be that )

When I did mine (I'm a 3c, 4a in the crown area with very slippy hair) with this method I started with clean damp hair and used fantasia ic gel (blue tub) like one would use a grease to tame the frizz as I braided. This worked. I put a little on in the morning to slick down halo and I also didn't lose a single braid, as I did back in the poetic justice days. LOL

It doesn't break your hair off because it is a moisturizing gel, plus if you follow her videos the leave-in and braid sprays strengthen and protects the hair.

My best friend has very silky 3B hair and she can't keep extensions in her hair to save her life. The first ones are slipping before the hair is even done.

But I think a lot of this depends on the technique and skill of the braider as well. For instance I know that you can start out kinky twists by braiding for like half an inch and then starting to twist. I also think shorter is better because there is less weight to pull/cause slippage. These type of things might help.

Maybe you can try getting your own hair braided/twisted back and then wear a half wig on the back or something.

I was concerned about the build up and needing to wash much more with MT. If I do decide to get box braids I may just have to slow down on my mega tek
I've gotten my braids down pretty tight(not brain pain tight) and nice. But they've never gotten past the 3 week mark like the sister a few posts back said. After two weeks I look like somebody's neglected child.

Maybe I'm just kidding myself. In order for this to be worth it I need a full month 4 1/2 weeks. I need 4 1/2 weeks to feel like the dent in my poor full-time student budget was completely worth it. I know some girls who have their braids in for 2 months and I'm super jealous because that amount of time would even make this a somewhat (or relatively) affordable hairstyle for me. I think I just need to maybe learn and do them myself so that I'll be able to maintain and re-braid them a bit. How long have you been braiding hair? Was it something you learned as an adult?

OHHHHH LOLOL 4 1/2 weeks. Honey no - maybe 3 with 2 washes. Definately not 4 weeks. Don't waste your money, you're going to need that for some snacks or something while you're taking finals. LOLOL

But seriously your hair could be maintained but as someone said it depends on the braiders technique. Straight asian hair is the hardest for me to maintain - now that was a lesson I never passed.

You know grownup get 1 pk of hair and pratice, necessity was how I learned. My braider was in an accident and others wanted 100 or more. Got 2 pks for $5 and practiced until I got it down. LOLOL True dat

Oh and I was in my early twenties when I really learned and started doing it for others - hey that could be your side hustle while you're in school. I bought I car with my hair mony -3yrs paid that joker off.
