I'm new to steaming and have only done it 3 times. I have heard some ppl have had negative side effects such as dry hair and breakage because they steamed too much so I am a little apprehensive of once a week but im giving it a shot

I'm steaming again later tonight! Are you guys using distilled water? I deep conditioned last night but it was a total fail. I feel asleep with heated cap on. so my hair is super dry right now. Any suggestions?

When this happens, I just re-wet the hair and that seems to activate the conditioner again. How did your hair turn out, @tigereyes83?

I'm jealous! I want a steamer so bad but I hate clutter! I also have read from several ladies and saw YouTube videos that said the main steamers ( huetiful and another brand) do not get the back of your hair. I got a hand one today. Can I join the challenge using a hand steamer?

Hi @sparkle25

Yes you can join with a hand steamer. You can even steam using a plastic bag. I am not sure exactly how to do it but I know some ladies steam with this method.

Welcome to the challenge!!

I said I was going to steam twice a month but enjoyed my steam last week so much that I did it again this week. :look:

It was good....I also learned that the hood is adjustable which made for a much more comfortable steam! :spinning: :giggle:

This time I steamed with Briogeo "Don't Despair, Repair" DC

On the bright side, this is making me more consistent with deep conditioning. I think I want to try steaming with oil next time, though.

I steam with a plastic bag! I put a water soaked towel in the microwave and then push out the water, and put the towel around my head, then put on a plastic bag. Then I sit under the dryer. I don't have a hard top steamer.

I also bought a hand held steamer. I use that to soften, relax and elongate my braids to have help with detangling. So I steamed 2x on Sunday. I enjoyed my hair session.

I steamed today with the conair hand steamer. I did about 7 sections and steamed each for a few minutes, added a leave in and steamed again. It took me about an hour and I had to refill the steamer maybe 7 times the whole time. Each section dried pretty quick and my hair still felt dry. I did notice tangles and shed hair melted although I didn't detangle my hair. I think I might invest in a real steamer if i like this after doing it a few times. The handheld steamer was huge and very heavy to me. It was hard to get the back of my head and my hand and arm started to ache.

Glad to hear that the tangles melted away. I use my hand held steamer to detangle mostly. I sit under my dryer, a soft bonnet one, to do the heavy duty steaming with conditioner. Let us know if you decide to get a "real" steamer!

Steamed again with babassu & cammile oil. Not sure if my hair likes this at this point. It makes my ends super tangled so I left it in twists. Maybe I should try with a conditioner next instead if oils. I don't have a leave in that I like right now so maybe I'll try to DC with it. Has anyone noticed a big difference between steaming with DC vs heat cap?
