Random Hair Thoughts/Thinking out loud

When someone asks for curl typing I always answer based off of the curl size and using Andre Walkers typing system.

I’m not going off of what your texture looks like. “Curl Size” That’s it.

That however is just for looks.

I use products geared for looser hair textures. I love oils based products( pomades/castor oil/ butters) only in the winter in NJ for styling and never anything shea butter based or coconut oil

Only two exemptions are Qhemet Biologics and Keracares Curlessence line.

In spring and summer I only use oils in conditioning. Styling is just water based / humectant based products if I’m wearing my hair out.

I said all that to say a lot of folks out here claiming 4c because they brush their hair out all the time or stretch their hair out and have never seen the actual texture.

I’m always amazed at how foreign the basic principle of washing, conditioning and leaving your hair alone is to so many of us. I also never cease to be amazed at people who think that our hair length is solely based on genetics. It’s 2025, so I [naively] expect people to understand length retention vs growth but, alas. People are still confused, getting into arguments online, etc. I truly hope that more people join groups like this, search google, etc. Black women can have long, healthy hair too.

I was in the airport and heard a loud, raucuous phone conversation going on behind me. Please tell me why this young woman walked by with at least $200 worth of braids but didn't have or get some inexpensive earbuds or headphones to ensure her conversation was private.

I need something for when I blowdry.

Amika has a silicone free product that I am eyeing (The Wizard). I recently saw a natural sis review it on FB. *She layered it over another heat protector (Innersence Hair Love Prep Spray).. but I do not need or want multiple products for the same job.

what is your go to heat protector?

I think that I might finally buy a RevAir. Between my oldest son and I, I think that it’ll get a decent amount of use (he wears his hair braided and I’d use it to stretch my hair before twists/braids or after washing in twists). Hmmmm.

Took the plunge. I hope that it’s here by Friday. Gotta wash, condition and blow my son’s hair out in preparation for braids on Saturday.

So my CurlyProverbz Hair Growth bundle arrived. One of the products in it is Peppermint and Garlic EO. Lord Almighty! I opened the box and just “knew” that it must have spilled. NO. It’s so strong that you could smell it through the bottle. I put it in a ziplock bag and could smell it. So, I put that bag inside of *another* ziplock bag. Now, I can only smell it when I put my nose to the double-bag.
My goodness. This is definitely going to have to be put in a pre-poo or something so that it can be washed out. Wow.

Okay. I came home today and now I can smell it THROUGH the two ziplock bags. What kind of craziness????? The reviews say that it doesn’t leave an odor, but HOW?

I have an Ayurvedic book about essential oils & the author said under no circumstances use garlic & onion essential oils cause the smells are unbearable. I use onion juice and I can mask the smell with ginger juice. I’ve bought food grade garlic extract and use it in my pre-poo. By the time I’m finished with my routine I don’t smell it anymore.

@VinDieselsWifey

I just wanted to tell you that seeing your avi and lots of other ladies' avis similar to yours, is EXACTLY why I joined this site back in 2009!
I was coming up on 30 and having had hair no longer than 3-4 inches my whole life, I came here to try to grow my hair to SL. I thought APL was Rapunzel hair!! So it was extra inspiring to see so many of y'all with BSL, MBL and WL "back shots" - on Black women!!! And now, every time I see you post and see your avi, I feel the nostalgia of coming here wide eyed and getting giddy bc I could possibly have pretty SL hair of my own some day.
I just wanted you to know that you inspired someone. Thank you! :flowers:

Thanks so much!! I took that pic in June 2008 & was so proud of my progress. That was the longest my hair had ever been as an adult. I had long hair as a child but moved to Germany at 8 years old and the hard water there broke my hair off. As a teenager my hair never grew past probably BSL. I too joined this board after seeing all the beautiful heads of hair here. I had never seen so many black women with such long gorgeous hair. I started studying the routines of my hair inspirations and was determined & consistent. I joined in late 2003 as an APL natural and by 2006 I was texlaxed. By June 2008 I had reached WL.

I can see that!
It has a ton of reviews and everyone claims that they don't smell it in the end.
If I use it, it'll definitely be a couple of drops in the prepoo.
I 100% won't be making onion juice, so it's onion/garlic essential oil or nada.
