How often are checking the length of your hair? Not stretching strands of hair. but full checks buy blow drying and or flat ironing?

I choose yearly. My hair doesn't do well with heat so length checking frequently is not a good idea. It took me a while to figure this out though. I would length check a few times a year and would always have to do a trim by the third or fourth check :wallbash:.

I choose 3-4 months. I only do it after every relaxer which is 12-14 weeks for me. Next one will be on or about March 17th

I was doing monthly checks, but since now I'm almost at my goal (WSL) I am going to do these length checks every 3-4 months to assess my hair and see if I need to tweak my regimen.

I am currently averaging 5-6months. I am not too big on wearing my hair straight...Perhaps when it is longer i may straighten more....who knows

i havnt did a length check on mine yet, but i plan on doing it at my one yr mark of being natural. Dec 2010, then i will only do them yearly.

Last year I only did it once. It seems like I am always stretching, so in 2010, it will probably be only once or twice as well.

I only length check after a relaxer, so for me that's bet. 2-3 months. I don't blow dry my hair, ever. I also take wet length pics because it's easier. I know some ppl say they don't count, but if there's a difference in my wet hair length, then my dry hair length has changed as well, no?

I chose 5-6 months but I have only been natural for a year and maybe only did a full straigthen or at least attempted a full straighten twice last year. I just didn't have the patience to check it plus i was able to cope without the "check" I had done one BC on my own then got it fixed by a professional afterwards and got it cut down alot again trying to get used to my "fro" style, so length checking was not an issue cause I knew it was short. Lol! After that I just been too busy to really check and it didn't seem necessary. I am checking my length by "ponytail" value by asking: "How much can I gather into a scrunci?" I can put my hair into individual all over ponies but not a single one....HTH.

I plan to do them after relaxers. I am stretching for 16 weeks this time, so my next length check will be in April.

The reason I asked is because I am 5mnth post stay under a wig wash in braids and had my hair lightly blow dried once a the salon and only took a side pic then braided it for my full wig so I really dont know how long my hair has actually grown since Aug. I guess i will toughen it out until April. I will blow dry then with hopes of a big surprise. :) Then if full weaves or flexi rods through out the summer.

I used to do every 3 months, now that I'm transitioning it will be every 8 weeks.

The last time I went a while without doing a length check I realized that I lost inches instead of gaining.

I don't want any surprises so I'll be checking more often this year.

how did this cause a set back?

Every month! If I were to go longer than that, I'd feel like I wasn't making any progress. When I can see length/thickness progressing each month, it keeps me motivated.

ETA: I'm transitioning (9 months), so I flatiron every two weeks. Once very lightly, and once seriously straight - so that's when I do the length check.

im transitioning and dont 'plan' to do a length check until december 2010, after all my challenges have finished. i then plan to fall in love with my natural hair sooo muccchhh that i dont really care about checking the length and just let it grow without no heat.
So i voted every 1 year.

Last time i used direct heat was october 31, so im gettin a bit itchy, but i know its for the best!

It didn't cause a setback, it made me realize I had a setback. I wouldn't have known if I never did the length check. That's why I want to start doing it more frequently.

That makes a lot of sense. I may do one when my toumaline blow dryer arrives. i am using something new in my scalp which is why i am itching and will scratch it with a blow dry with nioxin heat prot. :yep:
Next check will def. be at towards the end of the year.

If I had a real regimen, I'd say that my new regimen is to blowdry every 6 mos- 1 year from now for length checks and to keep those knots at bay...
My first blowdry/check will be this coming February and my last check (siggy) was in June 2009.

I have never done a proper length check where I flat iron my hair. I don't care to wear my hair straight so I don't do any length checks. Once I am full apl I will do a proper length check, maybe if I feel like it.

i voted yearly. full length checks i usually do at the end of the year. i'll check sections every couple of months, when i redo my braids, but not always with heat. it's a whole lotta work to flat iron my whole head :lachen::ohwell: . so i keep them to a minimum. also it makes the year end check more of a surprise. :drunk: as long as i stick to my regime, i retain what i grow. ultimately though, i'd like to straighten never-to-rarely for checks. i want wl twists. :drunk::yep::drunk:

I do a length check every time I relax which is about every 4-5 months..I'm always pleasantly surprised by the amount of growth I get

Yearly. I get my hair pressed completely straight once a year and that's what I measure against.
