That looks exceptionally heavy. *holdshead* And I wonder how much of it is extensions..........

I don't doubt that someones hair can grow that long, but I feel like there has to be something added in. My neck hurts from looking at the pics! But thanks for the link, it's always interesting to see old photos from other cultures.

It does look real heavy, beautiful none the less.
It looks similar to dread locks, if you keep them long enough they will get super long too.

I think I've seen something like that on Discovery. I can't recall. But it was an african tribe and they all grew their hair SUPER long. There was a reason why but I don't remember. This was recently too. It was down to their feet and THICK. I believe they had something like dreads. It was interesting. That's ALOT of hair and I don't think it's fake after seeing those other people I saw.

You're very welcome! I just thought it was time to show that (in addition to some of the great ladies on this site) we can grow long, thick hair also. I'm just sooooooo tired of the stereo-types about black hair. It made me feel very proud:yep: I wish my hair was heavy instead of thin and lifeless.

Heavy or not, I'll take em'

As I'm sure you know - dreadlocks are quite popular and originated from the Motherland.

You're right. I know some folks with dreadlocks and their hair looks very similar to those in the attachment. They don't have a problem with the heaviness and see it as a blessing from God.:yep:

You want to walk around holding your head up like that?

I think there are a lot of women on this site that have proven that black women can grow long, thick, healthy hair ( without injury to the neck) that you can look at for inspiration.

Ladies thanks for your comments, but let's not lose sight for the posting:

It was (heartfully) meant to discourage the thoughts about most of us not being able to grow our hair long and thick due to our roots and genetics.

Regardless of how thick it is, the fact is that It Can and Will Grow with proper care and maintenance.....And I seriously doubt if they are PJ's like most of us. Not that being a PJ is bad, but it can sometimes be discouraging.

As a kid I used to always hear that due to us originating from Africa, we couldn't possibly expect to grow long hair and that it just wasn't in us. In our Country that same crap is still believed today. It made it quite easy to believe when all the media ever showed were pictures of people with very short, kinky (you get the picture) hair. I was also told that the only reason that Sade had long hair was because she was, "Mixed" of Bi-racial. Well the people in the photos I've attached don't appear to be Mixed or Bi-racial.

Anyway, I could go on & on but my real purpose was to banish those old wives tales and give us more positive hope on our hair journeys. I wish I knew what types of food they ate to be so healthy in addition to having their beautiful hair. Sorry for taking so long. Just had to say it. Now don't be upset:nono:

They have dreadlocks. I have seen mid-thigh and calf length dreadlocked folks before. Not in Africa though. Their hair look beautiful. It look like that amount of hair would give you neck pain though.

Just to play the devil's advocate, I'm going to say that technically, the picture isn't that ground-breaking.

Those ladies appear to have dreadlocks (or a form of them), and for as long as I can remember, dreadlocks have been the only exception to the "black women can't grow hair" rule. Everyone I knew was aware that dreadlocks would grow as long as you allowed them to, even if they weren't well-groomed or hand formed, because many of the loced people around had long hair. The man who drove my bus had locs down to his butt. My teacher had locs to her elbows. The man who stood outside of the bodega had a big old ball of locs under his tam. The Rastafarians who worked at the West Indian Grocery Store had long, beautiful locs. The only people with short locs were the people who cut them that way. So everyone knew that loced hair grew, no problem.

The "no hair for you" rule only applied to fully black women with kinky hair or with relaxers. If your hair was kinky and natural, then it was "too nappy to grow". And if you had a relaxer, then you weren't much better off...your hair still couldn't grow, because you were black.

So since these women have locs, then to me, they are just another example of how dreadlocks will grow and grow if you allow them to. I'm more inspired by the women here who have tightly textured hair or relaxers and have still attained great lengths.

Also, their faces have that painful wind tunnel look....like how somebody with too tight braids might look like. And I wonder how their edges are faring with all that hair tugging on them.
But thanks for the picture and the post.

Cool picture, i've always had a great interest in history myself.

Well, since we're on the topic of hair in pre-colonial and early colonial rural Africa, i thought i'd add some pics.

these pics are mostly from Western Africa, and mostly of royal families. their hairs are all styled up funkily cool :yep:, mostly using a special type of weaving that would require quite a bit of hair to achieve. Its gone a bit out of vogue these days, except in rural Northwestern Africa.

this is also to counter the argument that in historical africa, people just left their hair out and did nothing to it

All these styles are prehistoric PROTECTIVE and creative styles.

ATTACHMENTS:
the first pic is two women with the special matting/plaiting i just wrote about, which would require quite a bit of hair in its unstretched state. Imaginge what it would be straightened! :lick:

the second is an afro- see how neat it is! the almost perfect calabash like roundness was achieved also with the plaiting technique

the third is a style similar to the first but so much more WOWable! these royalty really had their stuff going on for them

the third is almost like a double afro (as in the second picture)

the fifth is a matting technique- and oh what a cool haircut for the kid!

MORE TO COME!!! :yep:
