Bunning for a year? I think I am going to do it (long)

So ladies.
I figure that since before I knew what protected styling was I always had my hair up. Like always especially when the new growth starts coming in:lachen: I don’t even like to touch my hair.:nono:
So my plan is to bun till I get to next year January:grin: and see how long my hair will be. I’m not planning on using direct heat during that time with 2 exceptions. One is February 27, my sorority is having a formal and I want to try this style out that deals with curls. Now I don’t know it I’m wearing it up or down though. That all depends. Another I am planning is in Aug. and I am turning 21.:drunk: I don’t know what I am going to do but if I do go out I want to look my best. Now that is the only 2 times I am planning on using direct heat this year.
Having my hair out of a bun or not out will be maybe formal day and my birthday. But also on March 8th. Not completely if I am or not sure
but that is my one year anniversary with my boyfriend and my longest relationship ever. So I might have my hair down to make him happy.
Now for my regimen. I am planning on washing my hair when it is needed not because that it has been a week. But my hair is dry so I probably can’t go longer than 2 weeks. So on wash days I will be DCing on dry hair with ORS replenishing conditioner, honey and olive oil. I am also planning on adding Motion deep penetrating conditioner, the one with the protein (I also don’t have it yet so if I can’t find it Wal-Mart I will look for something with protein to add.) I will sit under my bonnet hair dry for 15 minutes and might walk around with the shower cap on my head for awhile also. Afterwards I’ll wash it out with the Motions shampoo and conditioner and LTR conditioner. (I put both on my hair at the same time) I have 3 leave ins LTR, Cantu Shea butter and the profectiv mega growth lotion. I don’t use all at the same time I rotate depending on what my hair needs. So I will but one of my leave ins in and seal with African’s best herbal oil. I will only be under the hair dryer for an hour and the rest of the time air dry. Or air dry a bit and go under the hairdryer for an hour.
For everyday I am planning on putting a leave in and oil once (might change in the summer) and putting in a bun. Low bun when I am going outside so my hat can fit on my head and high bun when I go to sleep (that mostly likely will change over the summer because I am not going to be wearing a hat) Usually when I am in my room I put my satin bonnet on because I am constantly laying in my bed.
For my relaxer. I only relax 2-4 times a year. It depends because, summer break I get relaxer then when school starting back up I get another one and then winter break I get another one. The tricky thing is it late December, early January. So if I relax in December and had relax January of that year that = 4, if not January of that year = 3, If December the year before and January the next year = 2. I know the stretch between summer break beginning and ending isn’t that long but I am not going back to school with new growth. Sorry. :perplexed
So if I cheat :wallbash:, I’ll tell when I update. And I am planning on taking pictures of my formal hair. So I’ll post that. I think that is about it for now. Besides me planning on buying some hair accessories.
Oh yeah. I am between SL and APL. I think I’m close to APL but I am not sure. Lol can’t believe I almost forgot that detail.

Good luck! There is an old thread of a girl that went from apl ( i think) to almost waist length bunning for a year. I wish I could do it but I can't hide my hair that long.

I bunned for over a year...it is a great way to retain length. Be careful not to stress certain areas, move the bun around, and detangle to avoid matting. But based on what your plan, sounds like you're on top of things. Good luck!

thank you for the advice

You can do it...Thats how I retained all my length while I was growing it out...Except I bunned Mon-Fri and on the weekends I rocked braid outs...I also Flat ironed after relaxers

Best wishes to you!

I tried bunning, but I have a bad habit of securing my hair too tight causing edge and nape damage.

My cousin did this for a year, but she had no idea she was protective styling. She was in middle school at the time. Her hair grow from NL to APL during that time. After all that, now she wears a brush cut!

lol aw. i wished that i knew about moisture and protein when i was in high school cause i always had my hair up. i didn't have to worry about cold air all that much cause i was in TX at the time

Good luck!! I will be right along with you! I'm bunning the whole year with one planned straightening (Easter, per my grandma's request), and five max wash-n- go's ( My 30th birthday, 10th wedding anniversary, and 3 special outings).

I'll be on the look out for fab accessories and perfecting my messy buns to keep things interesting.

Happy hair growing!!

I'll be cheering you on!!

I say make a blog or post monthly so we can know how you're doing. I was thinking of doing more protective styling this year, don't know if I could bun every day though.

By the way, make sure to bun in different sections of your hair (one week up, one week lower) so that you won't get breakage in the crown area. Happened to me once.

It's going to be hard to do this during the Spring and Summer when you most wanna look cute for the boys, but I know I can do it. If I can do a 6-month stretch successfully, then I know that I can do this.

GOOD LUCK!!!! You will be successful!:kiss:

You should join the bunning challenge or even start a year one of your own. I'm on a bunning challenge myself. Well a bunning covered with headwraps. I'll probably take off the wraps when the weather gets warmer. The only break will be when I wear yarn braids for my camping trip and costa rica trip. After that it'll be straight back to bunning. Make sure your bun isn't too tight when you sleep on it and if you're not taking it down each night moisturize it really really well.

Oh cool. Happy hair growing to you too.

I can't wait to see your progress. Instead of focusing on the whole year just take it one day at a time. And I don't know about you but 2009 flew by fast! It will be Christmas again before you know it :) If at any point you need motivation bump this thread and we will post some encouraging words :)
I'm thinking about staying in cornrows all year myself. And straightening every 3-4 months for length shots.

You can do it!!!!!!!!!!! :)

This forum has a blog and album you can use that's pretty convenient but only members can access it I think. Then if you search the internet I'm sure there's plenty of other blogs that will pop up. Good luck on your journey. Make sure to take a before pic so you'll be amazed at how far you came.

I'm really glad that I decided to pay the money. I think that this was the support I needed to light the fire underneath my bum.:whipped:

I think imma join you for this one. I really wanna make MBL by the end of this year, I'm past APL now, prob 2-3 inches away from BSL. Lol plus learning everything that I have here I'm so scared about my ends rubbing against my clothes or being exposed to the winter air. The only time I see myself wearning my hair down so far is for my birthday at the end of March

Alright lets do this. :yay::bouncegre

I decided last year that I would bun constantly in 2010. I will be doing 2 trims and 2 length checks only June '10 and Dec '10 and these will be the only times I use heat and won't wear a bun. I am currently between APL and BSL after doing a lot of trimming in 09 mainly as I am transitioning and had very damaged relaxed ends.

Soooo..... I am with you on this one too :)

:dance7: it's offically a party. i decided to do a blog about this i guess. and um when i do take pictures i will put them in my foki or post them here. Not sure yet. And when i update. I'll just bump this thread.

I'm in. I've started bunning the past 3 weeks bcuz i've been hating my hair, it takes too much work for it to look ok because of my layers.

Does anyone have the link to the post of the person who went from APL to almost waist length? I'm also on a personal challenge to bun everyday and it gets so hard sometimes. I used to wear my hair down almost everyday for the past 5 years. It's so hard not having it down!!
