DC BEFORE Washing

Does anyone here deep condition their hair prior to washing? (I did a search, but didn't see a current topic on it. Although, I'm still new to the search, so maybe I didn't do it properly)

If so, how does this work?

Do you follow-up with a conditioner after you wash?

I co wash but yes I DC before and sometimes I DC after. I also use a conditioner after cowashing.

I am a natural so this is a MUST DO in my regimen.

Thanks ladies. I'm transitioning and my natural hair is so dry. I'm thinking about changing my regimine (although I don't actually have one), so that i DC on dry hair over night. Then wash in the morn (maybe with KeraCare's new sulfate free shampoo...), condition with GVP Paul Mitchell Tea Tree or Lavendar Mint Conditioner and then go from there (dry, braid, flat iron, or whatever style). I'm hoping this will boost my moisture levels. Especially with this dry winter hair.

I'm in the sew-in challenge for six months. I want to be able to do a really intensive treatment after removal.

I can't really give you much advice since, I am not transitioning, and it's really hot and humid where I live- no problems with dryness. I hope you get some answers though.

BTW: I don't follow up with a conditioner after DC unless I need some more conditioner to help me comb out the tangles.
I say, if you hair feels dry, tangled or matted after you DC, use some more regular conditioner to wash it out in the morn.

I'm just wondering if the shampoo will cause dryness or wash away the benefits of having DCd in the first place.

Yes. I DC on dry hair, then rinse, then shampoo, then follow up with an instant conditioner. I don't like jumping in and out of the shower.

I've started doin this lately. It saves me a lot of time. I use either olive oil with honey and cinnamon. or Egg, mayonnaise and avocado on dry hair. These, I can leave on while I'm working out, cleaning or whatever without worrying if i'm leaving the DC on too long. Then I shampoo and condition in the shower. No hopping in and out or putting my head under the faucet.

Yep, I do. I'll DC, then poo-wash, then do a rinse-out conditioner.

Or I'll DC then co-wash.

I don't think doing it in this order washes out the effect of the DC because the point of a good DC is to penetrate your strands, not coat them.

I've been at this for over 2 years and I'm a recent deep condition on dry hair convert. It keeps you from jumping in and out of the shower and it's just as moisturized (if not more) than if you had done it the other way around.

there is a long thread on this topic, I forgot the title I'll see if I can find it.
But someone else already answered your question, but I believe even if you clarify after dcing on dry hair, the benefit shouldn't be washed out. the point of a dc is to penetrate.....

I do this to my children and the benfits are amazing. I think it's best to do it on dry hair because that way, your hair is absorbing all the condtioner.IF that makes sense. I think when your hair is wet, it's already sucked up water so not as much DC is actually getting in, if you were to DC on wet hair.

I can't wait to try this on my hair. All this hair talk is making me itch to take my yarn braids out, I REALLY miss my hair.

I DC on dry hair as well. The only con for me is that I use more conditioner this way than I do on wet hair. I prefer DC'ing this way.

Never tried to Deep condition b4 a wash...but i do Hot oil treatments...it depends on what u think is best

I actually started doing this last week and I'm glad I do. A lot of ladies on here said they don't like jumping in and out the shower, but I do this: I wet my hair under the kitchen sink and condition it. Then when I get ready to shower I just take it from there.

At my old salon, they would do a light shampoo after the DC, so that my rollerset and press wouldn't be weighed down with the oils from the conditioner. A true deep conditioner penetrates inside the hair shaft...so washing the outside cuticle doesn't affect the DC. It's already done its job by that point.

DC on dry hair never works for me. I only get good results on freshly washed, clean hair. If I feel that I need extra conditioning, I can just do an overnight baggy with some conditioner and oil on freshly washed hair, then rinse it out in the morning.

I started doing this about a couple months ago...I saturate my hair with water and try to lightly detangle while running water on it. Then I put on my DC and let it sit for a few hours or overnight ( I dont use heat) then I wash it out and co wash/detangle after. My hair has been really soft and shiny since Ive been doing this. I use ORS/pantene deep conditioning treatment for my DC
