My co-worker said, "once you go swimming all your relaxer is gone"

And maybe that's not what really shocked me. It was that it was only 3 of us standing there, and the only other person in the room chimed in and said, "Oh, now that is definitely true. Once you go swimming?! That relaxer is gone!!"

I wasn't even about to ask if they relax root to tip, cuz I'm starting to realize, it ain't my daggon business what they do with their hair. Still crazy as heck, though... :look:
 
At least you haven't got any relaxed hair to worry about. I'm transitioning so i might just try this dipping my head in a pool thing :lachen:

See! That's why I posted it, cuz I wondered if anyone had ever heard this before. At first I thought it was the wildest thing I'd ever heard until the lady next to us piped up. I bet it's common thought. I bet relaxing root to tip is common process too.
 
Yeah, girl, my mom used to relax me from root to tip each time she did my relaxers. :blush: The funny thing is that I had the longest hair in my family. I used heat everyday, used the pink oil lotion everyday, and greased my hair with sulfur 8....everyday!:lachen:I had MBL hair. She retouched me every 2 months with Dark & Lovely relaxer. When she stopped dong my relaxer, I went to a Dominican salon and got it done for 40$. They didn't do it the same, so I thought to do it, myself. 20 years later, found LHCF. I have hard to relax hair. Trying to relax my hair the safe LHCF way didn't work until I started using Silk Elemets no lye relaxer. I would have liked to experiment more with this relaxer, but I decided to transition to natural. We'll see in a year if I still feel the same way.
 
Unfortunately, a lot of people think this way. It still amazes me, some people think you can sweat out a relaxer too.
 
Hmm,...I don't think they are idiots, they are just uneducated about their hair. We all had to learn at some point. Some are just further along than others.

If only it were that easy we would not stress about transitioning! Relaxed one day, natural the next without losing any length...VOILA!!!
 
DH did not understand, initially, why I had to slowly cut off my relaxed hair. There are many people who believe that a relaxer can wash out or that they can "sweat out" a relaxer.
 
What's sad is we have been using these chemicals in our hair for years and have no idea how they work.

I don't think relaxers are the debil like some... but how can you use it responsibly if you don't really know what it does?

I'm pretty sure every relaxed person has heard this nonsense before. I used to think it too, that's why when it rained and I was caught outside without an umbrella, I'd be doing some Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon stuff...all defying the laws of physics...doing anything just to not have my perm washed out of my head. :lachen:

And it's funny how even though people call relaxers "perms", they don't catch on to the fact that "perm" is short for permanent. As in it's not going anywhere.
Over break, my youngest sister took out her cornrows and she was getting ready to go to the hair dresser (the same day), so I stopped her and was like.."Don't relax yet. Let me do your hair. I'll wash it, deep condition it, and rollerset it, and you can go in for the relaxer next week." She told me, "No...it won't straighten out with a rollerset...it's natural now." So I asked, "Wow, when did you go natural?" She told me that Joy (her hairstylist) told her that when she puts in braids, it goes back natural, and that's why is has to be re-relaxed. :perplexed
And after the relaxer was done, she was just walking around itching and itching and itching and complaining about pain and burning. So I suspected that the relaxer wasn't all the way washed out. I told her to wash it again, and this child. Told me, "Cheee - Cheee....I haveee a peee-rrmmmm. It'll gooo awayyyy. Gosh." Dragging out every word, like I'm stupid. :rolleyes: She didn't wash until she scratched so hard that her scalp started to bleed and she couldn't take it anymore. I used neutralizing shampoo on her, and the foam came out pink as a rose...imagine that. :rolleyes: At least she didn't lose any hair.
 
^^^ wow at that story. Poor sis.

I didn't know people avoided the rain or swimming for this reason. For me it was because i didn't want to ruin the style. Not because it would ruin my relaxer.
 
Funny thing is, Chaos, I was originally telling the girls about this lady that we work with who'd told me she was natural (back when I wore braids all the time). I guess she didn't know I was natural also, and I started asking all kinds of questions. You know I get excited about some hair talk! :lol:

Well when she took her braids down and came in with relaxed hair, I was souped! I was like, "you decided to perm!!" And she had this look on her face like, let me remember what I told this chick Then she looked me dead in the eye and said, "well you know braids strips the perm". I just nodded and left...

So as I told this story to my co-workers they all went, "What?! How she gonna tell you that lie? Now if she had said she went swimming...."

And that's where it all began :yep:

This may be a little different than the OT (IDK), but I have always wondered when naturals say: "I'm not afraid of water" what does that mean? I'm relaxed and I'm not afraid of water either...should I be? :lachen:

Ahaha, I remember you telling that story!
I don't even know where that nonsense comes from. You can feel the difference between your braided relaxed ends and the new growth. They obviously aren't the same. And I love how your co-workers countered her lie with another misconception. :lachen:

I will admit that I thought a person could strip out her relaxer by washing her hair with laundry detergent and vinegar. :nono:
